New Orleans Hornets to become… the Pelicans?

Rico Albarracin December 5, 2012 Around the NBA, News 19 Comments

“Look at the pelican fly. Come on pelican!”

The New Orleans Hornets are expected to change their nickname to the Pelicans as early as the 2013-14 season, numerous sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Hornets owner, Tom Benson, has wanted to change the name of the team since he bought them team on April 14. He also happens to own the rights to the nickname Pelicans. The Hornets also considered the nicknames Krewe (groups of costumed paraders in the annual Mardi Gras carnival in New Orleans) and Brass.

Gayle Benson, Benson’s wife, told Fox Sports New Orleans recently her preference for new team colors was navy blue, red and gold. I have no problem with the color change but it’ll be pretty similar to the Cleveland Cavaliers color scheme during the LeBron James era.

Now back to the important thing and it needs to be said. PELICANS! REALLY!? I get that the pelican is the state bird, but come on. Can anyone imagine going to New Orleans Arena, cheering your hometown team and then the chants start. “Let’s Go Pelicans!” Second, who would own the rights to a nickname like the pelicans? Aren’t there better nicknames to try to get the rights for?

The best choice among the three is the Krewe.  Krewe gives the team a great chant, a cool sounding nickname (I’m going to the Krewe’s game tonight) and is the spirit of New Orleans. Brass would’ve been better as well, with the connections being the brass in an orchestra. If it were up to me, I would make the Utah Jazz and New Orleans to trade nicknames and force Utah to come up with their own nickname. (Utah Peaks? Utah Saints?)

It’s gonna take a while for the basketball community to get use to the name change, that is after every joke possible is made about it.

If Pelicans have anything going for them… it’s this video…

I guess you shouldn’t make them angry.

Is this a massive practical joke? should just be called the Jazz again. NBA teams constantly relocating is the issue. Never happens in soccer.

Pelicans is a totally cool name. Krewe and Voodoo both sound completely 90s in an Orlando Magic/XFL kind of way. Brass would have worked too. But Pelicans stands a better shot at being timeless, and viewed objectively, Lakers, Celtics and Knicks all sound silly too.

Would be nice to have the New Orleans Jazz back, but they played in New Orleans for 6 years and in Utah for 33, so they’re not swapping. Want to make Los Angeles give the Lakers name back to Minnesota, too?

    • KY Celts fan

what’s wrong with celtics and knicks? Lakers isn’t a bad name either, it just doesn’t fit with city of los angeles at all.

      • KY Celts fan

while we’re at it, Clippers doesn’t make sense for Los Angeles either. both LA teams named after large boats, neither of which having anything to do with the city.

        • Drew

They used to be the SD Clippers

        • zippittyay

There are more sailboats (and barbers) in LA than SD.

  • Joe

I like Rhythm better than all of these. Pelicans sounds like a MiLB team.

    • KY Celts fan

it’s funny you said that because that’s exactly what the Pelicans were. The New Orleans Pelicans were a minor league baseball team that existed off and on from 1887-1977.

      • Joe

Yea. There’s still the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

  • Drew

I love the name. I think it’s great.

    • KGino

its not as terrible as everyone says it is

  • Jayfox

The other names that were being thrown around was “The Krewe”, “The Saints”, and “The Brass” all better than “The Pelicans”

  • screaming jay

Holy shit! Give that pelican a Rolaids! Yikes!

Let me state, first off, that the majestic pelican is my favorite bird. Not sure about naming a team the pelicans though. What comes to mind…the pelicant’s. I think brass would be better, has a similar connection to the city and what comes to mind…brass balls.

  • terlo

gotta be something represents the city tho. how ’bout Bouncers? Indians? naah, those aren’t. maybe something related with food?
besides, how do you own the word pelican? it is not a made up word like Microsoft or Apple.
    who dat!

    • Gafar

Apple is a made up word?

  • GreenCro

Like the name Voodoo so much, hahahaha, just can’t help myself ;)

    How about these as well:
    Gators, Creoles, Chers

    And more hysterical ones:
    Cajun, Jambalayans, Gumbo, Steamboat/Steamers,

When it comes to colors, well, the most authentic thing to do is to follow Mardi Gras colors, n’est–ce pas?
Purple stands for justice, green for faith, and gold for power.

  • zippittyay

    Better than Magic or Heat.

I hated this nickname until I watched that video. Thanks for the post! Please pass it on to the producers of the Hornets aka Pelicans so it gets played at every game.

    Changing names, changing cities… wow!
Names hold a tradition, cities hold their own culture; I’m from Italy and I’ll never get that, I’ll never get how somebody can turn into “fan” of something built at the table for economical reason.

If I were a New Orleans Jazz fan years ago, what can I turn to? A Utah Jazz fan? A New Orleans Hornets fan and now… a PELICANS fan??? This is just bs!
