Recap: No Rondo? No problem..

photo via Yahoo NBA

The Celtics pasted the Portland Trailblazers at TD Garden, 96-78. Courtney Lee and Jeff Green both stepped-up, and Kevin Garnett was vintage KG. He scored his 10 points on a variety of bank shots, fadeaways and sweet jumpers. Ticket also finished with 5 boards & 4 assists in 23 minutes. Jeff Green was aggressive from the jump and led the C’s with 19 points. He also played great defense and combined with C. Lee for 7 steals. Courtney had a solid line of 10 pts, 3 steals, 7 rebounds & 5 assists. It was his uptempo play that really set the tone. It was as if he was set free.

The Green: The Celtics were very aggressive on both ends of the floor tonight. Led by Courtney Lee and KG, the C’s defense held the Blazers to a miserable 23% from the floor in the first half-Celts tallied 8 steals in the first 24 mins. Boston had their biggest lead of the season, 25 points, near the end of the 3rd. They went into halftime up 56-33.

Jeff Green was fantastic. It was obvious that “Angry Jeff” showed up tonight, and he was quite impressive. Green had a team-high 19 points to go with 4 steals, 3 boards & 2 assists. Check out the video of his athletic and-one dunk below. Jason Terry quietly had a solid game with 17 points on 7 of 11 shooting. Paul Pierce had 12, 8 & 5 in 27 minutes.

Celtics played great defense. Portland was held to 34% FG for the game and Boston’s aggressive defense forced many of the Blazers’ 21 turnovers.

The Gross: Celtics became “disjointed”, as John tweeted, during the 3rd quarter. After KG sat down at the 5:54 mark, their 24 point lead was cut down to 16 by the end of the 3rd. Garnett could have sat for the entire 4th on the first night of back to back, but alas, Ticket had to return to action to begin the final quarter. But that’s all the “gross” you’ll get from me.

The Greenlights:

The Grid: (quick stats)

Celtics had a season-high 16 steals as a team tonight.

Blazers came in as one of the leaders in the NBA with 8.5 made threes a game, but Boston held them to 20% on 3 of 15 from downtown.

Boston shot 90% from the free-throw line, putting in 18 of 20 from the stripe.

Sully had another nice “blue collar” game, filled with hustle plays and grit. 9 pts, 8 boards & 2 steals.

Celtics are now 9-7 and head to Milwaukee where they’ll face the Bucks tomorrow night. Tip-off at the Bradley Center is at 8:30pm ESt>

Well, HELL, what do ya know? The Celts CAN hold a lead at the end of a game!

Tonight was a pleasure. Kris Joseph scored his first 2 points of his NBA career. Sully is going to be a very solid player for us, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him make an all star team or two a few years down the road.

When will DA make a trade for a big man? This team needs rebounding.

      ANDERSON VAREJAO…

      • Chris

        Yes please!

Surprised KWAPT didn’t mention Pierce’s ball handling skills in the Gross section. It’s painful watching Pierce handle the ball sometimes. He gets those amazing moments where he actually manages to attack the rim but man, most of the time, it feels like he either loses the ball, gets stripped, or passes the ball to the other team.

Thank goodness Rondo will be gone for just 1 more game.

    • KWAPT

I did notice that tonight myself (and this season) and indeed it is tough to watch..but in a blow out win like this, I’m not going to complain too much..

      echo that

Yeah, I know that the the Trailblazer’s aren’t a great team, but the Cletics offense looked very in-sync on offense tonight, considering they didn’t have their star point guard. I think this proves that the Celtics are a smart, unselfish team, and can thrive on a multiple-pass offense. Each move and pass is attacking, forcing the defense to get more and more out of position, leading to a good look. It’s not dependent on one brilliant Rondo pass.

I hope Rondo watches this and takes note, and realizes that a hockey assist can be as good or even better than an official assist. Stop worrying about numbers and just make the right play. That’s a lesson for every player.

    • Chris

Put that on the other guys as well. Just because Rondo is in the game, doesn’t mean you can’t initiate the offense

  • Caterpillar from Italy

Same here. Trailblazers are a lowly team for sure, but I don’t have to remember you how many match we lost against bad teams.

C’s looked good, in sync, with a fast offense. When Rondo comes back I hope I won’t see again 10-15 secs of ball handling and then the usual solution with ball to KG or BB and that’s it..

    Trade rondo

  • Reggie35RIP

Have to say they looked good without Rondo tonight. They shared the ball well and a bunch of different guys either created their own shot or made a play.

Hopefully Green and Lee can gain some confidence from this game and build on it. They have to remain aggressive and look for their shot even when Rondo’s on the court.

Props to Sully as well, he had a great game. And even Collins managed to chip in with a few good defensive plays. Although I’m looking forward to when Wilcox is healthy again.

Portland sucks, but at least we beat them convincingly and didn’t fade towards the end of the game.

  • RedsLoveChild

Playing a weak opponent at home will cure most ills.

  • coachaj

Don’t be silly and start with the trade Rondo talk. We played a rebuilding team, we are supposed to beat them. Rajon will come ready to go, accept that sometimes dude gets frustrated with the refs and has a tendancy to lash out. But remember in this instance he was defending a mate, and it wasn’t vicious like THE CLOSELINE.
I only want for christmas is this jeff green, the one who believes that he can really play this game. And you can forget about him being traded, if everyone thinks we overpaid, then why would tyey trade for him? Simply put, they wouldn’t. Green can play ball, but doesn’t always believe he can.

ANDERSON VAREJAO FOR OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS GARNETT ON DEFENSINVE REBOUNDS

  • andy

Im the biggest rondo fan there is but you cant deny that the offense lookd great last night. The ball moved and guys looked for their shots unstead of rondo havng to create them. Agree it was against a bad team. We will see what happens against the bucks.

  • GreenCro

Hate to agree on this, but… Varejao or Noah or someone similar…
    A.S.A.P.!!!
    Damn it…
Can’t believe it came to this…

  • Jim

The Celtics might have looked good without Rondo but don’t read too much into that, other teams after getting over the surprise of a Rondo less Celtics wouldn’t take long working out how to defend us, whatever tempo we played.

  • Quest

Still waiting to see how they handle an elite team. C’s are a very good team but have yet to prove they are an elite team in the league.
