Rondo moves to 6th most popular jersey

John - Red's Army (@RedsArmy_John) November 28, 2012 Around the NBA, Celtics News, Rajon Rondo 10 Comments

The NBA released its newest list of best-selling jerseys, and Rajon Rondo has moved further up the list.   After cracking the top 10 last season, Rajon has moved in to the #6 spot.

Here’s their list of the top 15:

  1. LeBron James, Miami Heat
  2. Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder
  3. Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers
  4. Carmelo Anthony, New York Knicks
  5. Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls
  6. Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics
  7. Dwyane Wade, Miami Heat
  8. Blake Griffin, Los Angeles Clippers
  9. Dwight Howard, Los Angeles Lakers
  10. Chris Paul, Los Angeles Clippers
  11. Deron Williams, Brooklyn Nets
  12. Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder
  13. Steve Nash, Los Angeles Lakers
  14. Paul Pierce, Boston Celtics
  15. Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas Mavericks

Some notes on the list, also from the NBA PR department:

The Thunder’s Russell Westbrook debuts at No. 12.

  • The Celtics’ Rajon Rondo and the Los Angeles Clippers’ Chris Paul each move up four spots from last year to Nos. 6 and 10, respectively.
  • The Lakers were the only team with three players on the list, with Bryant (No. 3), and new additions Dwight Howard (No. 9) and Steve Nash (No. 13).

The list is based on sales at the NBA Store on Fifth Avenue and on NBAStore.com from April 2012 through Nov. 26, 2012.

So it’s possible the list is off slightly.  You can go a million places to buy jerseys.  But it’s still indicative of Rondo’s surge in popularity.  As polarizing as he can be among some of the fans in Boston, people around the league see many of his spectacular plays and triple doubles and are latching on to him as one of the league’s young superstars.

Does the players get some % from every jersey/item with their name/number/likness sold or is it ‘included’ in their salaries/contracts? Just curious.

In my opinion, knowledgable Celtics fans shouldn’t wear Rondo jerseys. I understand why young kids and band wagoners would wear it. But it’s kind of an unwritten rule that Celtics die hards should only wear Pierce, Garnett, or Bradley jerseys. Any other active players jersey should be an after thought.

      Unwritten rule? Says who?

Me, I think it’s “cute” when people list Rondo as their favorite Celtic. It’s hard for me to take someone serious that likes Rondo more than Avery, Paul, or Kevin. Don’t get me wrong, I like Rondo and I’m a huge fan. He just has a long way to go as a Celtic before I wear his jersey.

Drew I put Avery before Rondo too on my list of favorite celtics… and consider myself a HIGHLY KNOWLEDGABLE C’s fan. That being said I own a Rondo jersey but not an AB (he’ll be my next jersey).

I made it my goal to have every Celtics starter’s jersey from the ’08 season in a different color. So I have Ray, Rondo, KG, Pierce, and Perk each in a different color/style Celtics jersey.

I think if there’s any “unwritten” rule, its that die hards should always list Pierce as their favorite current Celtic.. because he’s been here longer than everyone else and has spent his entire career here. I agree with you that Pierce, KG, and AB best represent what it means to be a Celtic, but not every Celtic fan thinks in those terms. And AB’s emergence is relatively new, so you can’t blame people for owning a Rondo jersey before they own an AB jersey.

In terms of whose most exciting to watch, though, wouldn’t you say Rondo? If he’s technically the best player on our team and the most exciting to watch, you can’t be mad at people for owning his jersey.

          • Drew

I’m not mad at anyone for wearing his jersey. It’s just my opinion that older fans that know better look silly wearing it in public. And Pierce having big games always excites me more than anything Rondo does. I realize that’s subjective, because I just love Paul Pierce more than any other athlete. I think most neutral fans would rather keep an eye on Rondo though. He gets the average NBA fans wood up a lot more than most I suppose.

I don’t see why a hardcore fan shouldn’t be enough of a fan of Rondo to own his jersey. The kid is a stud player and the future of the team.

You didn’t make a clear argument as to why you believe “die hards” shouldn’t wear Rondo jerseys.

A person is not a bandwagon fan if they choose to wear their favorite team’s most popular player’s jersey.

You also have to remember that outside of the New England area, Rondo’s jerseys are probably going to be easier to locate than any other active Celtics player’s jersey.

I admit I have a little bit different attitude. Pierce -sure for everything he’s done and still doing, KG -sure devotion passion, importance for the team but AB well I reallly can’t see why you put him before Rondo -he showed what he can do and how good he can be but he’s still “wait and see” cuz of injuries, longer season and so on. Rondo has long way to go to earn his place in Celtics history -no doubt about it, but so has Bradley (even longer way to go). And Rondo is already showing how great and important player he is what he can do for the team he developed, earned respect from veteran players future HOF’s, he’s the future of that team and after KG and Pierce gone he will have to step up even more and show his leadership and maturity (I’m pretty sure he will do that). All that being said, wearing his jersey is nothing strange at least in my opinion.
