Recap: Celtics embarrassed in worst performance of the season

John - Red's Army (@RedsArmy_John) November 18, 2012 Recaps 43 Comments

The Celtics took a long, hot piss on my preview optimism tonight.  They had an early 6 point lead, but they relaxed late in the quarter to let Detroit cut the lead to 2, and then they took the rest of the night off.  C’s fall to Detroit… DETROIT!!!!…. 103-83

The Green:  Rondo got his 10th assists with less than a minute to go in the game.  If there was any question as to whether that’s important, the C’s left him in during a 20-point loss to get the assist when the game was out of hand.

The Gross:  Everything that happened in the final 38 minutes of the game.  Yeah, it was that bad.  Are you really going to make me list EVERYTHING that went wrong?  The C’s were tired, lazy, whatever you want to call it.  They just didn’t have it tonight.

The Greenlights:

The Grid (quick stats):

  • Jared Sullinger ended up being the team’s high scorer with 16 points on 7-12 shooting.  That’s a new career high for the rook.
  • Rondo had 10 assists, but he also had 6 turnovers.
  • Paul Pierce shot 5-13 to finish with 13 points.
  • Courtney Lee too 2 shots.  TWO.
  • Jeff Green had 6 points and 2 rebounds

In the end, the Celtics got blown out in their 7th game in 10 days, on what was their 3rd back-to-back in that stretch.  I feel stupid having predicted a win, much less a blowout win.  I should have known this was going to be a loss.  I guess I got carried away.  Plus, Detroit is terrible.

Oh well.  Chalk this up as a very… VERY… forgettable mess of a game.

The trolling is going to be at an all time high. I’m gonna have to stay off ESPN for at least a couple of days after this embarrassment!

    • Cal

There’s a lot of trolling on espn. It’s a feel good moment for trolls when the C’s are struggling. It is what is with espn’s message board, I usually keep my distance from anything related espn.

The Celtics 6-5, is a clear indication of who they are and that is a team that’s playing subpar basketball. They look PATHETIC! Playing with no urgency or purpose and I don’t get it? With 11 games in I’m not feeling this Celtics team’s energy.

Right now the Celts look lazy, fatigue, sloppy and reckless on both ends. Sometimes I wonder if they care?

      • stephanie

You know they probably went into this game knowing they would blow them out like Toronto. The guys had open shots, but couldn’t hit anything AT ALL. Just drive to the basket already. But I guess almost being in foul trouble early gave hesitation to that..hell I don’t know

    • AB#0

@Stephanie I agree, but can’t say I disagree that the Celtics shouldn’t be clowned. They played like crap tonight and the previous games too. The Celts deserve to be critized by us and clowned by the trolls.

      • stephanie

Probably should just start a forum for trolls telling them we welcome their comments with open arms..one time only..LOL

        • NBA is soft

When teams like the Lakers, Celtics or Heat struggle the trolls come out in full force. Just the way it is.

  • Jester00

    Jeff Green sucks

    • KY Celts fan

We’re all aware of your position vis a vis Jeff Green. Constantly repeating it is getting mighty old.

      • Jester00

there are new fans to the sight everyday they may not know my position. sorry if this makes you upset I find it funny.

    • stephanie

Everyone sucked tonight, not just Jeff.

    • Mannie

Yes. It’s JG’s fault we lost. Where we’re you the last couple of games that he played well…?

      • Jester00

2 games the whole season he had played well he shooting worse then Rondo and and Larry Hughes life time from 3 right now

  • art

Did Doc coach the game like it meant nothing? I didn’t see the game but noticed that Garnett only played about 11 minutes in the first half, less in the second. Detroit 54.2% FG%. Totally unacceptable. And shameful.

  • Drew

I suffered from the WORST panic attack a couple hours before the game. One of those attacks where you fear death and can’t breathe, heart pounds, yada yada. That being said, this game almost triggered another one. Sorry to ramble, but in close games and blow outs does anyone else get anxiety/panic issues? For instance, when Pierce hit that shot over LeBron in game 5, I couldn’t control my heart rate and I almost passed out. This has to be a somewhat common thing. Anyone get this problem?

    • Bobby Kenn

@drew u need to lay off the happy dust.

    • Rdawg

      no, it’s just you

    • JBcelticsFan

Thats not common man, you should see a doctor.

  • Alex

Thank goodness I switched to The Walking Dead instead of watching the game!

  • jim

i would play like elephant dump too if i had to fly to ghetto ass detroit on sunday night its all cold and stuff

  • Roy B

Just wondering if or when the Celtics pride will show up, because as of now they’re playing with no pride, effort or care. Right now they look far from a contending team and base on the inconsistency not sure when they’ll look it.

The Celtics need to wake up and realize they can’t coast through another season and expect the same results as last season.

  • celtics33

If this was any other team in the NBA that had their coach leaving in a player late in a blowout game for a personal record they would be roasted by all Celtic’s fans.

It’s one thing to achieve a streak in the flow of a game. To leave Rondo in for 38 minutes of a blowout loss, to frantically run plays trying to get him late assists, to leave Rondo in when 2 games ago he was injured and should have been resting on the bench is just pathetic!

Classless move by Doc and the team as the streak should have ended tonight. Not used to seeing the Celtics put personal again above team play…

    • stephanie

I agree to an extent. Hell they’re losing anyways why not get a couple of assists and keep it going, it doesn’t hurt. He gave some good assists to some open shots and alley oops, he can’t help that they couldn’t complete a shot or pass if it saved them.

    • Drew

I could go either way on this. But can you imaagine how much of a baby Rondo would be is Doc didn’t let him play?

    • Sheets

Doc knows what he’s doing. If he took Rondo out and didn’t continue his streak, Rondo would sulk for the next 2 months and play horrible. Got to keep Rondo happy and he knows that. Now… When does the Josh smith trade talk begin again? Jeff Green sucks got to get rid of him.

      • RedsLoveChild

Josh Smith trade talks have already begun….the Lakers offered Gasol for Smith over the weekend.

  • eddysamson

wow thank god I went out on a date instead of watching this WOW…just seems like typical Cs not giving a shit about shitty opponents.

    • Bluu

@Eddy Should we be surprise anymore? Maybe this is who they are now and have been the past 2 seasons. Maybe we as fans think more of the Celtics than themselves. Could it be the Celtics, as a whole no longer values regular season games especially with the cornerstone players being 35 and 36.

They’ve look like a team that can careless about anything especially inferior teams.

  • KWAPT

Doesn’t surprise me at all. The Celts have played down to inferior teams for the last few seasons. 2nd night of a back-to-back against a team that was ready to fight for their 1st home win of the year. Saw this coming a mile away…Doesn’t mean I like it, but I’m definitely not shocked.

    • Billy Kenn

@ completely agree Kwapt and Bluu. It’s just unfortunate the fans have to witness the pain. Thank goodness I don’t have League Pass.

    GO C’s
    kick Spurs and Thunders a$$
    to silence back doubters

  • Chris H

What was Darko’s situation? This WAS the game to play him. ESPN Box Score says “Did Not Play-Family Reasons”.

  • classless

These games do not matter to this team. Sad, because the public pays for them.

  • Caterpillar from Italy

It was really hard to watch, I felt embarrassed.
And I stayed up until late here in Rome to watch that crap, me stupid!

That being said, I think the C’s will be just a bit more than a 0.500 team, and I predict no more than 40 wins this season; too many clicks have to click at the same time for this team to be steadily competitive.

I hope I’m wrong, of course.

    • Drew

40 wins is a win percentage of .487. That’s below .500. That could be bad enough for a 9 or 10 seed and missing the play offs. That’s the boldest statement I think I’ve ever heard.

      • Pierce for 3

@Drew It may be a bold statement, but that is the impression the Celtics leave on people. They’ve developed this non-competitive attitude the past 2 or 3 seasons, where they take certain opponents serious and others not.

Look at teams like the Clippers, Grizzles, Nets, Bucks, Spurs and Knicks, they’re just as deep as the Celtics, but they’re winning. Those teams are competing, the Celtics are selectively. Not good.

      • Caterpillar from Italy

Sorry for my bad math, but you got the point. Maybe not 40 but 45..
And of course, once again, I hope they’ll prove me wrong.

  • Reggie35RIP

From the fruit to the root. This game was an abomination. Everyone played horrible and that’s pretty much it. Looked really good in the first, went to complete shit after that. The second quarter was particularly horrible.

Most disgusting stat after three quarters – only seven assists and six of those were Rondo’s.

Rondo was trying to keep the streak going at the end. But it seemed like he was going for it right from the beginning. I’ve never seen him play that passively before. All he was doing was setting up guys for jumpshots for the whole game. And when all the guys were as cold as they were last night you’ve got to try something else. He barely drove to the bucket at all.

Very disappointing after the Raptors win. Thought they were getting some momentum going.

  • JBcelticsFan

As a fan that has watched every game in the big 3 era I have to say I’m not shocked or disappointed. I dont feel anything and Im looking at wednesdays game. No need to worry or overreact. They do this ALL THE TIME. This team doesnt care about the Pistons. Cs showed a glimpse of what they could be. Teams like the Pistons just doesnt excite this team. Sad but true. I guarantee the Celtics put more effort in the game against the Spurs. The Spurs are actually a good team.

    • Reggie35RIP

I’m not a fan of taking games off. This is one we should have just gone through the motions and got an easy W. Instead we got thumped.
