Celtics sign Leandro Barbosa

Well, that didn’t take long.

A day after waiving Dionte Christmas and Jamar Smith, the Celtics turned to Leandro Barbosa to address their backup point guard needs.

Barbosa is a serviceable combo guard with a score-first mentality.  But when you consider how few options there were out there, and how little Rajon Rondo will actually sit, the mere fact the Celtics will have an NBA veteran to bring the ball up and let Courtney Lee and Jason Terry play their more natural roles makes this signing a decent one.

I dunno..he’s more like a 2..i like him when he was in suns tho..he’s in a decline.he’ll probably play 10 mins a game tho so it wont really matter..

  • Danno

Solid 8-12 ppg guard who’s never really had a bad year. Just played on really bad teams.

Most Talented Celtics Backcourt in team history.

    • MJ

Nah. Nothing tops 2007 when we had Telfair, West, Rondo, and Allan ray.

      • 413murph

Rondo, Ray, West and Telfair never played together. Those guys minus Telfair played together in ’11.
Telfair was shipped in the KG deal when Ray showed up too. Also Telfair never makes increases the net value of any backcourt lineup.

        • MJ

I’m talking about the year before the big three got together. We had a guy actually named Allan Ray on the team. And I was joking.

          • RA_PapaIrish

the kid from nova who was a 3 point specialist who was like 0-1043554 on threes attempted in the garden

          • MJ

Again, I was joking but thank you for bringing that to light.

          • RA_PapaIrish

I know you were joking, i was just further pointing out who allen ray was

          • Curt

            LOLOL, that’s hilarious.

        • KY Celts fan

          Oooooh. Fail.

  • Jester00

they should have Kept D West he is a true combo guard. drink check??????

    • vivek NJ

he was recently suspended by mavs who resigned him.

      • eddysamson

That doesnt change the fact that the Mavs love him. He is known to have bipolar disorder. And seems to be trying to make an honest effort to be a better person/employee. Who knows what happened but it was only a 1 day suspension

    Pretty good acquisition.

Barbosa had 3-5 real good seasons while on the receiving end of Nash`s passes…Rondo`s passes could revive his career.

    • eddysamson

But they took him to play while Rondo is sitting…

  • OlSkool

Not a big fan of Barbosa as a PG but it was slim pickings at this point.

  • Wels Catfish

Interesting. I’m not very familiar with him as a player. During the Olympics he was really fun to watch, I believe he came off the bench for Huertas to provide a scoring punch for Brazil. No idea about his playmaking ability. I have no idea how there are going to be enough minutes for a Rondo-Bradley-Lee-Terry-Barbosa guard rotation.

  • Curt

Look at it this way…he’ll add more to the team than Nate Robinson did. And I loved Nate as a Celtic.

    • Wels Catfish

Yeah I was just thinking about Nate, I loved that guy, even considering his faults. What little I can recall about Barbosa defintely reminds me of a slightly better version of Nate, and that wouldn’t be a bad thing. As long as Doc can figure out the guard rotation.

      • Curt

I think they’re different enough that I’m not really comparing them other than as backup PGs. Barbosa has better control of the ball and more experience.

Barbosa is an athletic marvel and jumps like Tony Allen. Anyone not liking this pickup simply doesn’t pay attention…Lester Hudson over Leandro? Stupid. actually, Ignorant.

  • el blanco bronco

Also it can’t hurt Fab’s transition to the NBA having another Brazilian on the team.

  • MJ

Can’t believe we got him. This team is 13 deep if you include Collins.

    • RA_PapaIrish

judging by the way he looked against the nets, you can’t

      • MJ

The guy can’t do much well but for a sixth big, I say he passes as quality. Considering he’s one of the best at covering Dwight.

        • Reggie35RIP

Seeing how he fared against Evans and Blatche I don’t hold out much hope of him being a “Dwight stopper”.

I’m not entirely sure why we didn’t go for Blatche. His defensive game isn’t great, but would have been good to have another big man that can score.

  • http://redsarmy.com dan doden

I guess Barbosa is a fine pickup, but this team still needs rebounding….bad. Just seeing Reggie Evans beat them constantly last night is a painful reminder. They can’t get to anything.

    • MJ

The absence of Darko and Wilcox may have had something to do with that. Seriously we have enough bigs.

    • Wels Catfish

I’m not sure if this will be as big of a problem this season. Collins is really our only big who won’t help at all with rebounding. We have already seen Darko doing a nice job on the boards, and Wilcox should do his part when he returns. Sullinger did well last night, and Bass has been decent so far. KG usually delivers about a quarter of the available defensive boards, which is all you can ask for.

I guess I’m just saying we need to wait till everyone is playing normal minutes and the defense is in place to know what we have with rebounding. So far, the numbers haven’t been terrible.

      • Gill

Any update on Darko’s injury ?

    • Dustin Chapman

You’re obviously correct in saying that rebounding is a concern, but Reggie Evans is Reggie Evans. Laugh all you want about the “caliber of player” he is, he has been one of the league’s best rebounders for years.

    • Reggie35RIP

It wasn’t great, but definitely better than last season – which wouldn’t be hard.

Sulli’s hitting the glass hard which is good to see. A few offensive rebounds against the Nets.

Hopefully Wilcox can get healthy and we should be ok.

  • PicketyP

So much for keeping a roster spot open for flexibility later on, although I guess the vet min deals won’t cause too much of an issue if the C’s develop a desperate need somewhere.

  • MC

He’s nothing like Nate Robinson. Good signing tho

  • thetitleisours

I would take Lester Hudson over him

  • Hayley Celtic

Love this signing! looked good in the Olympics, hope he can do it in the NBA though

    • Mannie

Of course he can do it in the Nba. He’s a former sixth man of the year!

      • Hayley Celtic

or should i say, can still do it in the NBA

  • Gill

    Any update on Darko’s injury?

    • Alex

I think he’ll be ready for next game. He was out for a couple games due to wrist pains.

  • Mannie

I love this signing. He did good for the pacers coming off the bench last year. I love how we have signed a lot of guys who actually like coming off the bench( Terry, Lee, and him). His finesse game is fun to watch and he is good for Fab’s development.

  • Quest

Looking good on paper but does it transfer to the court though. Time will tell I guess. Getting a little concerned with the # pre-season games lost. Rondo arranged practices at the start of Sept. out west. They have been together practicing longer than any other team already as a result and we still have more losses than wins????

    • Chulinho

Dude, other good teams are losing in the preseason too. For example, the Lakers are 0-5, but Kobe dropped 31. I really hope you’re not letting the preseason bother you. It’s for guys who are new to the team and guys who want to make the team, not veterans that have gone deep in the playoffs or have plenty of experience.

    • Chulinho

*Kobe dropped 31 last night is what I meant. The Lakers still got blown out.

    • eddysamson

Its really not a big deal. Have you actually watched the games? For the first 2 the 2nd halves were almost all rookies and 2nd/3rd stringers. For the rest of the games its been like this for the 4th quarter. We’ve lost every single game purely because Doc is letting the new guys close the games. None of our top 10 players would have let any of those games be a loss.

  • zippittyay

    good move.

  • coachaj

all of the moves are designed to decrease the big threes minutes during the 82….we need them healthy not limping in the playoffs…..it is also giving all a glimse of a seamless transition to the rondo era, which will be a more faster, high flying pace. Sully could very well be an evans type rebounder, give it time.

  • Grandad434

    excellent signing! Leondroooo

  • I bleed green in L.A.

AND we keep him from L.A., who definitely wanted him. HA HA
