Your Morning Dump… Where Doc’s playing mad scientist again

Chuck - Red's Army October 11, 2012 Brandon Bass, Celtics News, Jared Sullinger, The Morning Dump 13 Comments

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

“I’m going to try it a couple of games,” Rivers said of Sullinger starting, “and then I’ll throw Brandon in and I’ll throw Darko in a couple times. So you can read into it whatever you want, but there’s been no decisions made on anything now.”

When asked directly if Sullinger could open games — a rather big deal for a rookie on a team planning to contend for a championship — Rivers didn’t hesitate.

“I said that when we drafted him. But I don’t know if that’s true or not yet,” Rivers said. “I don’t really want to get into who’s starting and who’s not yet, but we’ll see. Darko, too. We can slide Kevin over to the 4 to start games the first half of the year. I don’t know if that’s a bad thing, so Kevin doesn’t have to have a wrestling match the entire season with the bigs. So there’s a lot of thoughts.”

As John pointed out yesterday, Doc may just be blowing smoke to keep the guys from resting on their heels.

But after all the drama created last year by Crybaby Ray, Doc’s also realized it’s important to restore Ubuntu.

“It’s not always going to be roses,” Rivers said. “What I try to tell them is that we’re trying to play for something as a group and everyone has a role, and we need you to buy into that. Again, some guys that are actually good guys haven’t, and some guys that haven’t been great teammates in other places have come in here and done it. I wish I knew the formula, but I don’t. I just know I don’t ask a lot, we just do it and we hope they handle it.”

As far as the line-ups go, I’m intrigued with Jared Sullinger as a starter (and in denial with Darko as a starter). This “competition” for the other starting big adds some intrigue to the preseason.

Great to have some competition for starting spots. Last year there was none. I liked Pietrus, but was horrified when he had to start for Allen or Pierce.

  • Kricky

It’d be great if Sully could step in and contribute right away. But it’ll take time for him especially as he adjusts to the NBA game and figures out how to mask his weaknesses.

Worst case scenario if Brandon Bass is unprofessional we can always explore that trade for Josh Smith :P

    • Drew

Haha!! If Bass is unprofessional?? You guys are weird……..

It doesn`t matter who starts…..what matters is who is on the floor during the final 5 minutes of the 4th quarter.

    • Curt

Nope, that’d be the third quarter.

  • Aaron

Im really not that worried about Darko starting. i figure at the worst if he starts he can play a Thabo Sefaloshia to James Harden with one of the other bigs off the bench

I’m not that worried about Darko Starting either. If you look at his numbers for the last several years they are not bad at all. They are In the Kendrick Perkins range honestly. if Darko is setting hard picks getting rebounds and hustling on defense, he’d be a solid role player type starter. The problem in the past is people acted like he should be a primary scoring option. won’t be a problem here.

  • Curt

Darko will be better than Shaq and JO combined as Celtics. Not because they are bad players, but because Darko is healthy, big, and athletic. He’ll probably be better than Perk was after he gained all that weight. FYI, I love Perk, and I’m still saying this.

Darko wont start, else they wouldnt be able to use Sully. Remember what Doc said about sully not being the tallest celtic player out there. that would mess up rotations pretty bad.

I just hope Avery doesnt get put on the bench. He produces very well with rondo

  • kyle

i really like the idea of srako starting especially against bigger centers to give kg a rest. He is an above average rebounder so he could really help in that category and also play good defense and get blocks for us

    • kyle

      wow i meant Darko
