Christmas in July

Dionte Christmas’ great play in Summer League has been rewarded. ESPN Boston’s Greg Payne first tweeted that Boston has signed Christmas to a partially guaranteed contract/camp invite. Our own John Karalis, in Vegas for Summer League, said that Christmas told him he’d be flying to Boston tonight to “sign papers”.

Celtics Director of Player Personnel Austin Ainge talked to John about Dionte after the game:

“He’s had a great summer league and he had a great year last year in Europe.  He’s a very good player.  He’s an NBA player.”

It will be interesting to see how Dionte does in camp & the preseason against bonafide NBA pros. I like Christmas’ game, and he told John yesterday that he’d been offered “crazy numbers” to play overseas, but prefers to play in the NBA. Since coming out of Temple University in 2009, Christmas has spent most of his professional career playing overseas in Greece and the Czech Republic.

Why would a Lakers fan want Christmas to make the Boston Celtics team?

      • Lakers4Life

I like Christmas and think he’s a good player, I’d like to see him in the NBA even if with the Celtics of all teams.

Lakers4Life is actually a pretty good fan. Just comes here to talk basketball, not get us Celts fans all riled up.

Didn’t mean to come out rude or anything. Was just wondering. 🙂

I’m guessing this (& Jamar Smith) means goodbye to Quisy & or Dooling. I’m excited about this roster, Danny can take a vacation now.

with smith and xmas half of the team will be guards?! not good

I believe the Celtics can cut a player with a non-guaranteed contract during training camp and the player will not count towards the Celtics roster. The player can then be assigned to the Maine Red Claws for the season, as the Red Claws organization are now the sole NBA D-League affiliate to the Celtics. If a player on the C’s actual roster gets injured or cant play for whatever reason, the C’s could call up that player from Maine as one alternative to signing a free agent.

I personally don’t mind the Christmas signing; he’s quite motivated, eager to learn from Doc and the veterans, and seems to be pretty energetic. As for the Jamar Smith agreement, I’m not as confident. Does anyone know if it is guaranteed contract or if it was just a training camp invite?

Six out of the 15 guys are guards, nothing wrong with that, as Bradley will start injured. We are 15 deep, that is what gets me excited. Hopefully Bradley comes back a little sooner than predicted and Doc gives the rookies some time and gives KG and PP some rest early on. Really looking forward to the new look 2nd unit. Terry-Lee/Christmas-Green-Wilcox/Sully-Collins is gonna be worth it. Add in the 5 starters and that makes us 12 deep. Yes yes yes. Hope they gel in Europe and reclaim the Ubuntu they lost.
