Your Morning Dump… Where the Mavs got OJ Mayo for peanuts

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

The third overall pick in the 2008 draft broke the news on his Twitter account, saying, “I will be signing with dallas! #Mavsnation.”

Not long after, Mavs owner Mark Cuban tweeted: “Welcome to the family OJ. We are fired up !! MFFL Mavs/Mayo Fan For Life !”

The exact terms of Mayo’s deal were not known, but it is a two-year deal with a player option in the second year. The Mavs had about $4 million in cap space remaining.

ESPN Dallas

Four million dollars for OJ Mayo? This doesn’t seem right. Two days ago there was a report that he had asked Phoenix for $8 million per.

I know what you’re all thinking. We paid the 34-year old Jason Terry $15 million over 3 years, while the Mavs paid the 24-year old Mayo  $8 million over two years?

CelticsHub is speculating that Mayo might be part of some sign-and-trade, possibly involving the Celtics and Terry. But that wouldn’t be possible if you believe the ESPN report that Mayo’s contract is for two years. Sign-and-trade contracts must be for three years.

  • Well….. I’m happy for Dirk?

  • MissMD07

Well that just doesn’t make sense. His asking price was $8 mil. Phoenix tried to get his asking price down. He could’ve easily taken MLE from other teams including the Bulls. This seems absurd. Rumors are that Celtics contacted OJ Mayo and he said he wouldn’t talk to people for MLE. Now I’m wondering if signing Jason Terry was a knee jerk reaction b/c Danny already knew Ray was going to leave. $15 mil for 34-year old Terry? Mayo is essentially a younger Terry with a cheap price tag. Wow. Maybe Danny should’ve waited for the market to dry up.

  • piecz

Terry is much better player than Mayo. + He wants to come off the bench so we can finally have some real bench spark.

  • MissMD07

No longer worked up over this. I was on Zach Lowe’s blog trying to find out what other shooting guards are left besides Lee and he had them ranked. Terry was ranked ahead of Mayo. I read his reasoning so I feel a little better. Youth and athleticism would’ve been nice. This is the main reason I wanted someone like Courtney Lee or Mayo. They’re young.

If Mayo is making 4 mil next year, he needs to find a new agent

jermaine o’neal signing w/the lakers just ruined my day

    • Andrew

How did j Oneal ruin your day? he is horrible and i am glad the lakers are taking our junk every year (Troy Murphy last year and Oneal this year).

    • I bleed green in L.A.

Please tell me this is true, it will MAKE my day.

    • RedsLoveChild

After last season, one would have thought that Jermaine O`Neal was downrght “radioactive” to NBA GM`s.

Now, the Lakers are about to sign 36 year old Antawn Jamison.

Mithch Kupchak has clearly lost his mind!

      • Lakers4Life

I think these aren’t that bad of pickups for us. Better than Troy Murphy and Josh McRoberts. Plus our summer league team is 0-3 with one loss by 40 and another by 50. We clearly don’t have a bench.

        • RedsLoveChild

I have to assume these moves are somehow related to acquiring Dwight Howard.

It makes me sick just thinking about it…but, there is no doubt in my mind that the Lakers will somehow wind up getting Howard.

          • Lakers4Life

I think thats why they are making these moves too. Howard would be awesome to have and all but without an extension I’d rather just keep Bynum.

        • I bleed green in L.A.

Wow, a respectable Laker fan? Not a troll, and speaks about / defends his team. Nice.

          • Lakers4Life

Most appreciated. Don’t get me wrong I hate the C’s as much as the next Lakers fan like you guys hate us but I hate the Heat way more. Plus dude runs a great blog I think, I check it daily.

      Two words: “good” “riddance”.

He’s absolute garbage, was good in his hey day when he could stay healthy. These days you’d be lucky to get 20-30 games out of him for the season. Still can’t believe we paid good money for him in the first place.

  • michael

I no sad missing out on the Mayonnaise. When he’s hot he can be unstoppable, when he’s not he resembles a lecherous ball hog.

    Lecherous Ball Hog –
“one who lusts after glory by launching long range shots and/or wildly attacking the basket, especially outside the flow of a structured offense.”

I agree Terry is a better fit for us. Possibly even a better fit than Ray, which remains to be seen. It would be nice to add Courtney Lee as insurance, but we won’t be able to offer him a prominent role once we have a healthy AB.

Terry and Lee would make a nice 2nd unit backcourt. However, Rondo is not going to sit more than 8 minutes a game. We’re mostly going to use Terry at the 2. Can Courtney Lee play the 3 spot?

Our main backcourt need is injury insurance for Rondo/Bradley/Terry. We’re better off signing one of the summer leaguers (Christmas?) to fill that role. If Lee can be a 2/3, filling in for Bradley to start, then subbing for him and Pierce throughout the year, I think he’d be a great add.

  • MissMD07

Rondo plays heavy minutes. We don’t have a backup for him. Avery plays better w/o the ball and Terry is the 2 off the bench as the 2. Who’s giving Rondo a rest? And we still need someone to rebound. We still haven’t addresed that very much.Someone besides Wilcox. Bass doesn’t rebound well. Sullinger rebounds but i don’t even know if Doc is gonna give him minutes and we don’t know how that translates in nba
. He struggles against taller power fowards.

    • Chuck

Once AB is back… Terry will get minutes at back-up point.

    • michael

We should also get Dooling back. He’s a reliable ball handler, defender, and 3-point shooter. Add one of our 4 summer league guards to the mix, and the backcourt is pretty well set. Add Lee and it gets a bit crowded, but a good problem to have.

I’d rather have Lee than sign some scrub backup bigman. I think we’ll be fine with Sullinger playing 15 minutes per game and Melo 8-10. I also don’t mind paying Steimsma somewhere in the $2.5 range.

If we can SnT for Terry and get Lee on the MLE, then we should have enough left to match a reasonable offer on Steimer.

  • kricky

I never understood the infatuation with May o in the first place. Dude is still living off his potential. But in reality he’s not getting ,much better than he is now.

Terry is a MUCH better place. The guy has stepped up big in the past and gave Dirk a run for finals MVP last year.

Still if 4 million is true its pretty surprising. But maybe its a good sign if the market has fallen a bit making it easier for us to get Lee (who I’d rather have than OJ anyway)

    • RedsLoveChild

There seems to be a huge gap between what people “think” OJ Mayo is….and what he “actually” is.

At 25 minutes a game…Terry will be just fine for the Celtics.

      • Mikey

Exactly! We’re used to GMs making such atrocious deals, $4 mil seems like a bargain. Guys like Omer Asik and Nic Batum are getting twice what they’re worth. I’m however surprised JR Smith is only getting $5.6 for 2 years…not that i’m a fan but dude needs a new agent.

  • Brian

If we can’t get lee, looks like dooling and peaches are the best options. I still think delonte west would be a great option as well. I hope christmas makes the cs training camp. Guy has a real chip on shoulder.
