Report: Ray Allen can opt-out after one year

Chuck - Red's Army July 15, 2012 Around the NBA, Ray Allen 42 Comments

This juicy tidbit comes to us from the Miami Herald:

Heat fans should appreciate Ray Allen next season, because there’s no assurance he will be here beyond that. Two sources with direct knowledge tell us that Allen’s two-year deal with the Heat includes a $3.2 million player option for 2013-14. So if Allen wants to become a free agent again next July, he can. So can Rashard Lewis, due $1.4 million in 2013-14.

This just reaffirms what most of us deduced from Ray Allen’s introductory press conference – He’s not sold on Miami.

And… Ray issued a subtle thank-you message to Celtics fans which appeared in today’s Boston Globe:

if ray wanted back in 2014, what say you guys? prodigal son, or benedict arnold forever?

    • Gixr1

Nobody should give a f&$k anymore. Out with the old in with the new, because ultimately…if you’re not with us you’re against us.

    • Alex

I highly doubt Ray Allen will want to come back to the Celtics and if he did, it’d be an embarrassment, especially if the C’s win this upcoming year.

    • RedsLoveChild

Wow…just thinking about a 38 year old, washed-up Ray Allen returning to Boston next year is so thrilling.

      NOT!!!!

  • 54

Doesn’t this news make you dislike Ray even more? He talked about how his legs still have a lot more years left in them and then he leaves for less money and he can opt out after one year.

  • KY Celts fan

He better not try to come crawling back next season.

  • LA Flake

the fans should give him a standing O when he comes back to play us ndxt year. once the game begins, boo his ass off every time he touches the ball.

  • Drew

Thanks Ray for all the good times! It was a great ride and, who knows, maybe you’ll be back in 2013-14. Always welcome in my book.

    • Alex

How can you even say that? I swear, people are weird sometimes.

      • Sparky the wonder dog

        This is how did it

Thanks Ray for all the good times! It was a great ride and, who knows, maybe you’ll be back in 2013-14. Always welcome in my book.

        See it was like that

    • GarnettsGrl

I’m with you Drew, once family always family. You can always come home…..

    • TC

Live and let live. I kinda feel sorry for him now. I bet he regrets leaving deep down.

  • Eric

F*&% Ray. Used to be my favorite player. I’m tired of the Ray Allen shit. and F*&% the Heat. I went to the mall and saw Heat shit everywhere. That shit pissed me off. Last time I checked I was in MASSACHUSETTS and we have a fkn team. Some people forgot what it means to have hometown pride. BANDWAGON merchandise found all over the mall… Smh..

    • TargetBlue

Damn Eric you sound like a little biatch right now. Get over it man.

      • Johnson Steele

        LMFAO!!!!

    • Sparky the wonder dog

      Geez

    • Robhimself

Im with you, this is MA! Not MIA! One thing the celtics have always had is pride! And the fans are proud of our celtics! I’m a proud Celtic supporter! I love my celtics! I LOVE THE CELTICS! … But Ray, I don’t know how to feel. He was one of my favorites, I stood up for him when evening said he was down, I said he’ll be back next year popping 3’s all over everyone’s ass. Alas, I was wrong. He left us. And worse, for the enemy. The HEAT! Of all teams? If he went to the grizzlies, sure, good luck your a free agent. But the heat? Sorry but that’s rude. That’s a middle fucking finger in the faces of Doc, Ange, the team itself, MA as a whole and every fan that ever held up a flag or slipped on a jersey. At first I was sad, now… I m ready for war. And your “thank you” in the herald, why don’t you stab us, then call the ambulance. You got on your boat and joined the red coats. No apology will make up for that.

      • Moe

I couldn’t of said out better myself!!!!!

        • Moe

You know what I’m saying. Lol

  • bleedgreen

Ray Allen, I miss you and I hope you come back soon..

    • Alex

Why would you want Ray Allen back as a Celtic? Seriously?

  • Art

It’s over for Mr. Ego in green. No way. Oh,and by the way, Ray, thanks for forking over $12 mil so the C’s can sign someone younger and better than you! Go Danny!!

    • Jesse

Hell yeah! Love this comment. Just think of it. JET off the bench , avery starting and courtney lee coming off the bench too.. man. Way better than Ray.

  • colaroaster

fire doc and trade rondo.. its a no brainer

    • The truth

Lay off the bath salts bud…

      • Jon L

        well said paul

    • GarnettsGrl

Who the hell are you???? Let me guess some heat or laker fan…..BOOOOOOOOO!

  • TNCeltic

I think he regrets it already. I’ve been really ticked off, but seriously – how many of us haven’t done something stupid spur of the moment and then regretted it? He who is without sin cast the first stone. Cut the guy some slack. It’s done.

    • Alex

Uh dude, he had plenty of time to think about his decision. It’s not like he had to make a quick decision. He actually has to sign the contract at the end to become a Miami Heat player and he signed it with a smile on his face.

  • Frank

It’s about money… If he has a great year he leaves for more money. If he has an off year he stays. Going to Miami was revenge on Boston. Next year will be the chance to make up the 12 million he lost for not staying in Boston

  • Quest

2nd yr player option….Ray just wanted out of Boston… whatever…. it’s the name on the front of the jersey that counts.

  • tbone

say eric if you did not like what you seen in the mall go some wear else and eat some s—ht go heat for life

    • Andrew

      lol I’m not even mad

    • Alex

I have no clue what this kid is saying. He must be new to trash talking… being a Miami Heat bandwagon fan and all.

  • zippittyay

Like I said previously, Ray will tire of being LeBron’s bitch real soon.

  • Poweboy

Ray was a class act while he was here and I will miss his smooth stroke from three, along with camera shots of Flo celebrating in a jeweled number 20 jersey.

I will not miss the fragile ankles, the increasing lack of defensive mobility, and the inability to create off the dribble.

Ray was great while we had him and now he is gone, period. I think it was a smart move to move on – for both the Celtics and Ray. Jason Terry at the projected contract is an upgrade and might give us the mobility to get Courtney Lee.

I look forward to seeing Avery and Rondo match up against Wade and Ray. I can’t see Miami setting as many double and triple screens for Ray. Good luck.

    • thirstyboots18

      Excellent post…and I agree 100%.

  • Reggie35RIP

There’s no way he’ll come back to Boston for the rest of his career. So not too phased by this news.

  • D Wade

Why would ray return to a loser like Boston. Bosdone

  • http://thegreatoutthere.blogspot.com Matt W

So it’s only a 2 year deal? He went for less money and he didn’t even get a third year? That’s pretty crazy.

  • thetitleisours

I would let him back if the situation called for it. Hitting over %40 of your 3’s is always a good thing. Is it just me, or does it look like Ray always looks he smells something bad when he is on the court?

  • CPUFC

Why the f–k did he bother… He left us for the enemy. Are we supposed to wish him well or forgive him. F–k that. This man is a disgrace. A true coward. He couldnt beat the CHEAT so he joined them. The thought of seeing him celebrate a title without KG, PP and RR is sickening. In the end, because he couldnt win in Boston he forgot everyone but his damn self. The thing is Celtics could have won but they lost the fire. There should be 3 banners hanging in TD garden. Thanks for your efforts on winning 1. For that 1 moment, the Big 3 reminded us of our glorious past and for bad or good became a part of it. Another thing that makes me want to vomit is Pat Riley talking about retiring your jersey before you even played a game and being retired not next to your brothers KG, PP and RR but a pack of egotistical maniacs. You should take calls from the Celtics fans via Skype. Forget your millions of $ and CHEAT dreams and come down to a street level and front up to the people you turned your back on. Sooner or later you will face the Celtic faithful. Ive got one memory of you playing the CHEAT. Getting absolutely disrespected by Wade when he blocked your ass and dropped you in a heap on the hardwood in which what I thought was blasphemy. Thats who you joined. U sold out Ray and it is a great disappointment .Once one of my favorite players, now the most hated. And I am not proud of that but it is what is. Ray, I wish you were still a Celtic, I really do, but you made your choice and now you can live with it. Celtics 4 Life.
