The Jet nears a landing in Boston

John - Red's Army (@RedsArmy_John) July 3, 2012 Free Agency 48 Comments

Sorry… couldn’t resist the pun.

We have differing views on Terry over here.  I think Jason Terry is a nice signing, but I’m looking for a little more.  I suppose we’ll have to wait until the details of the deal before passing judgement, huh?

UPDATE:  It’s a reported 3-year deal worth the mid-level… basically 3 years, $15 million

UPDATE 2:  He’s reportedly going to give Dallas the chance to match

Love this signing. He hates the Heat, rubs in big shots as well as Pierce, and is a GREAT lockerroom presence. Good work, Ainge.

  • http://tedsarmy.com Scott

Terry’s a great fit for the C’s. Good contingency if Ray doesn’t come back, but doesn’t preclude us from bringing back Ray either. Love this move as long as it’s two or three years at MLE.

  • KY Celts fan

I’ll take it. Though for another year, Boston has become the place where NBA All-Stars go to end their career.

    • Lee in Oregon

Terry isn’t an all-star, at least in my opinion. He may have made 1 all-star team in his 15 years…

      • KY Celts fan

nah, I don’t think he ever made an all-star team. But NBA champion and sixth man of the year is a pretty good resume. Though I’d rather become a team where All-stars begin their career rather than end it. That third year better be a team option.

  • Wil

Whyyyyyyyyyyyy? Could anybody pleeeeeease tell me whyyyyy?

So i guess the celtics aint building for the future if the first guy they sign is a 34 yr old guy?

    Whyy pleasee whyyy?

    • WinstonSalems

quit crying. this is a solid pickup for the C’s. He’s a proven scorer off the bench and he’s a champion. you’d rather have OJ Mayo? haha. come on, son. it’s too early for you to be jumping on the bandwagon, the season hasn’t started yet.

    • zippittyay

      The Future starts now.

  • http://yahoo bamaguy

Hope that the organization won’t let the team as a hold get old like bird, Parrish and Mchale.I’am a long time Celtic fan.Might not be around long enough to see them come back to being a contender

    • John (not the real one)

congrats on being old and being able to use a computer, something people over 50 struggle with mightily

  • jimmy

He’s 35 years old, wth are we thinking!

  • kricky

Don’t get me wrong. I love Terry’s offense off the Bench. He’s a clutch shooter no doubt.

But if we don’t sign Ray or Peaches we will have the smallest backcourt in the league. This could be a problem.

    • http://msnhotmail.com belinda

They are bringing back Jeff Green, Brandon Bass, Greg Steamer, Chris Wilcox, and Kevin Garnett, not to mention the 2 kids out of the draft, 2 of them were bigs as well. Boston needed some major fire power off the bench. For the past 2 seasons Boston has had no real help off the bench, they needed a reliable shooter like Jason Terry, this is one of the best moves they have made so far. I even like Jason’s energy better than Ray’s.

      • LA Flake

god i hope they don’t bring bass back. HE SUCKS!!!!! terribly low bb IQ. bad hands. never anticipates passes. horrible team defender. LET HIM WALK PLEASE!

  • Lee in Oregon

I hope Dallas matches….how many geriatric shooters that can’t play defense do we need? Sometimes DA pisses me off…..I hope I’m wrong, but Jesus…..3 years?

    • WinstonSalems

relax. when he’s scoring off the bench and hitting 3’s, you’ll be back on this message board telling all of us that YOU knew Terry was a great signing. Terry is an energy guy and he’ll be a Garden favorite. Quit complaining already.

      • JJ

People have varying opinions, just like you. So, YOU relax. I will happily eat my words about Terry if he proves me wrong. That would be great for the team, and that is what’s important. However, there is no conceivable way you can bully everyone here into buying what you’re selling.

  • Lee in Oregon

Danny shouldn’t be allowed to use the mid level……Sheed, JO, and now Terry. They should call it the “give some greybeard a ton of cash to play 1 year” exception.

  • Danno
    • Lee in Oregon

DA says he wants Ray back but something tells me this is the end…..I’m just wondering if Ray wants to split back-up minutes with the Jet…(after he was supposedly pissed about losing the starting job)….could a sign/trade be on the horizon?

  • Brian

This is a good signing if they get Allen as well, but I think more then anything it is a good back up plan. If a guy is 6-6 or 6-2 does it really matter if he can hit 3’s. Terry is a combo guard who wasn’t great on the defensive end but was that really the problem for the c’s this year? He can play the point along with Allen as the back up back court. Allen is on his nation wide tour but unless he wants to play for the clippers his best fit would be the C’s

  • Noori

I think this is a fantastic signing! Bye bye Keyon its been real

  • colaroaster

    3 yrs/15M is way-way too much for 35 y/o 6th man veteran.. c’mon danny

    • Brian

He made 11 last year so getting him for 5 isn’t bad. If we tried to get him for less we would;t get him at all. Then Allen decides hmmm I think i want to start for LAC. Then we would be screwed. This gives us a nice back up plan, and still leaves plenty of room to bring back Ray and whatever we end up doing with Bass or the sign and trade to the bucks for Ilyasova which I hope they do.

      • JJ

Your reasoning lacks severe substance. Basing $5 mil this year off his salary last year, which was from a contract signed when he could still actually demand $11 mil. Not a basis for signing a player. It will be great paying a 38 year old $5 mil in three years.

        • Brian

My Reasoning lacks severe substances? What are you talking about? Much like KG and Allen he took a 50% pay cut. It’s the norm as we have seen across the league for players after their prime. SO getting a guy for half of what he made last year is a good deal. Is he half the player he was last year, no not at all, so dollar for dollar it is a bettter deal.

          • JJ

Again…you don’t seem to understand …terry is not KG so don’t go there. In YOUR opinion, getting anyone for a half of what they made the previous year would be great! That alone does not make a signing great, but you seem to think it does. 35 years old…3 years…not good. AGAIN, Jason Terry is NOT KG or any other future Hall of Famer that is past his prime, so do not compare because it is baseless. Was
$11 mil his worth last year? No, it was the final year of his contract. So, why base your whole point on that? I guess Rashard Lewis would have been a bargain to sign for $11-$12 mil the year after he pulled down $23 mil?

          • Brian

Rashad Lewis? Really? Lewis is washed up now that he can’t take his pills. Jason terry is a lot better then Lewis and so is kg. Their salaries are right in line and don’t break the bank or prvent us from making moves in the future. What do you think we need to clear cap room to sign Howard, that isnt going to happen. You don’t like the signing i get that but grabbing terry is our best option and 5 million is not a lot of money. He is not going to be playing 40 mins a game so the age isn’t as big a deal as you make it out to be. When the cs get out to an early lead guys like terry are the ones that keep that lead instead of blowing it like last years bench. Your the GM. Do you bring back kg, Allen, green, sign terry? What would you do?

          • JJ

Did I compare Rashard Lewis to anyone? No. I used his contract as a reference point to prove that signing someone for half their previous year’s salary does not equal a great signing alone. You said ” SO getting a guy for half of what he made last year is a good deal.” I don’t mind the $5 mil or his age THIS year, but I hate it for next year, and the year after. We gave in to him, instead of the other way around. There is no team without KG, so KG was a must. Jeff Green will be back, and as long as it’s at the right price (and security-health wise), I like that because he’s young and there is still potential there. I’m mixed on Ray at this point because his attitude is bothering me. He said he would always do what’s best for his family. Staying here would be that. Going to Miami or LAC would be doing what’s best for his ego. I will let him decide because it’s obviously 1000% his decision. I would actually like to see them go after Daniel Green. He is young and can defend multiple positions, and he has been around winners. He would also be cost effective. I would sign and trade Bass for the best value in players/picks that I could, and give Sully and Melo a chance to show something. I like Bass, but no way I would give him a long term deal after our draft. I know Doc’s system is not for rookies, but he has no choice in the matter now. Ainge drafted those two to play, not to watch like Moore and Johnson. KG would not have come back like that if we drafted them to sit them. He wanted help at center so he could go back to the 4. Melo will play purely for his size and defense. I actually think he could develop nicely, considering he’s in the NBA after playing basketball for only 5 years. Both he and Sully seem to have a chip on their shoulders, and I would like to see them prove some people wrong.

          • Brian

First off KG is going to be your 5.. .No way Fab is going to be your starting 5 and if steamer leaves for the wolves, you don’t have any other options..Find me a guy who agrees with you and I’ll show you a guy who has had to much fruit punch on July 4th.. Not going to happen. What I actually said was, SO getting a guy for half of what he made last year is a good deal. Is he half the player he was last year, no not at all, so dollar for dollar it is a bettter deal. Yea if the guy is washed up no kidding it’s a bad deal but if the guy can ball like Terry, and KG then it’s a steal. The 5 million we are giving Terry is stil less then we gave Allen at the same age. Was Allen a better player sure, but was he twice as good I don’t think so. Terry was our best option, this year and after Who else would come off the bench?. Nick Young? OJ Mayo.. when those guys jack up bricks do you think they will get the ball from Rondo? The C’s only want team players and Terry Fit the bill…

          • JJ

I’d like to hear that from Doc or KG. KG will dictate where he plays. He did NOT come back to strain through 3 years at a position he hates. I never said Melo would start, that’s ridiculous, but he will play. I think you’re on the other end of the fruit punch there buddy. You made a statement there, and I proved that statement wrong. Extend your quote all you want, you said it. I can’t stand Mayo or Young…Young should not even be talked about. Stop pulling other players out of the woodwork when I never even spoke of them. I don’t like Howard, and I would oppose that signing. Never talked about him, or Mayo, or Young. Yet, you throw those players in my face…to prove you have nothing relevant to say? YES FOR THIS YEAR IT IS A GOOD DEAL. For the life of the deal, NO IT IS NOT. Do you honestly think that if Terry was that great, he would be signing with the Celtics for the Mid? Nope. He was one of very few decent options. Does that make him, or his signing great? No. I would be 100% for this deal if it was for one season. We’re Boston. Free agents aren’t banging our door down, so we overpay in years or money or both. All well and dandy, but I don’t agree with it, and I don’t have to. When you’re named GM of the Celtics, you can dictate where KG plays. Until then, focus on your reality that is NBA2K12, where you can play KG at center all day, and edit Jason Terry’s stats to mirror the DNA from that one game he hit 9 3’s.

          • JJ

Further…Doc did state that Sully would play some 5. KG might play some “5,” but he won’t be their starting center. They will all rotate, and Doc will adjust who he plays to who they are playing. They can go big or small, and there won’t necessarily be a traditional full-time center, and there doesn’t need to be.

    • Danno

Ray wants 3 years/10 mil – and he’s 478 years old, with ankles made out of paper macche

  • RedsLoveChild

I agree 100% with those who oppose the signing of old vets.

Still, look at it this way :

-Terry is 2 years and 2 months younger than Ray

-Terry has played 10,000 fewer minutes

-Ray missed 20 games last year, Terry has gone a decade w/o missing 20 games

-Unlike Ray, Terry`s ankles have never been a problem

    • JJ

I just hate that it’s the lesser of two evils at this point, and not a signing that we can really feel great about. I really hope he does well because that’s great for the C’s, but I’m just really uncomfortable with it.

  • colaroaster

ray’s signing too? g’damn they would be built to make (several) deep runs. stephan a. smith would go bat shit crazy and so would i

  • JJ

It’s a done deal. Donnie Nelson bid Jet farewell today. I still don’t like it, but I don’t make those decisions. 3 years is way too steep. $5 mil when he’s 38 years old? Everyone will be thrilled then. I think he’s good, and while younger than Ray, he’s still damn old for an undersized 2 guard. I don’t think we’re going to see the masterful defense and brilliant passing that everyone seems to think he possesses. It’s not 10 years ago. And please don’t bring up the Mavs championship anymore. He was great in that series. It’s been a little while since then, and it was one series. Let’s leave it at that. He’s here now, though, so I’m hoping for the best.

    • Frank

Terry was originally a point guard, he averaged close to 5 assists per game. The plan is to have him and Ray on the floor together with Terry running the offense. It’s an upgrade from Dooling.

      • JJ

Show me the 5 assists per, will you? Is and always was a shooter.

      • JJ

And of course it’s an upgrade from Dooling…but he isn’t replacing Dooling, and he is getting paid a lot more than Dooling.

    • Frank

Don’t mention his championship?? It’s been a while???? It was 13 months ago? You act like it was ten years ago. It was last season and maybe if the mavs didn’t break up their team they may have been back there.

      • JJ

Stop living in the past. Is today 13 months ago? Do players get better or worse with age? All of your comments are: maybe if this, maybe if that…you are clearly living in some dream state where there is a DeLorean. If your argument is solely based on wishing he was here last year and hoping he is transplanted from the Finals a year ago, there is no need to even respond to you.

      • JJ

And in terms of basketball time, yes, it has been a while, and will be even longer when we actually see him playing in a Celtics jersey because the season just ended as I recall. One question mark would suffice.

  • michael

Terry is actually better today than he was 10 years ago. Maturity. Great signing. And if we can’t get Ray back, I’d love to see Danny Green in, well… GREEN! Cetainly addresses the age and D questions of our team. And he seems very mature for his age.

    • JJ

Ok. If you name a single guy other than Steve Nash that has actually gotten better with age, you are very much out of the loop. JT is NOT, I repeat is NOT, better than he was 10 years ago. Not true and not even close. Bring some actual facts to the table. Everyone here seems to think he is some Hall of Famer, when he wasn’t close and never will be. 3 years is horrible. It helps us this year, then hurts us for two. Look at the man’s statistics. I would hope he matured in 10 years…but does that deserve anything? No. That’s what would be expected out of a pro athlete, yet we’re celebrating that an undersized, 35 year old guard has matured? Wow. Expectations must be pretty low.

  • Frank

I’m 48 years old and let me tell you kids something, rebuilding isn’t what you think it is. Last the Celtics did this so called rebuilding nonsense it took 21 years. I rather have old guys that give you a chance to win. Being a Celtic is about loyalty and I think this group deserves another shot or two. If they had Terry last season they may have been in the finals. Last year those 3 old guys plus Rondo almost beat the Heat.

    • JJ

Yup. Born and raised in Massachusetts and have followed this team loyally for 30 years, myself. Don’t show here throwing your age around as weight. You may not fully understand the differences between the NBA then, and now. You might be fine with old guys, and woulda shoula coulda for if we had Terry last year. We didn’t, and last year is gone. Move on. Living in the past, and not learning from past mistakes is a recipe for disaster. I recognize the need to keep this team together, but it’s because of a lack of viable options. I fully grasp what rebuilding is, and I was an unabashed fan all through the 90’s. You weren’t the only one. I am loyal. I am a Celtic. That is why I stand up and oppose this signing logically.

  • JJ

I am not basing Jason Terry, the man or the player, I am simply bashing the signing. I don’t like it, but I sincerely hope I am proven wrong. We’re in “win now” mode so I fully understand DA’s reasons, just don’t agree. A one year deal? Absolutely. 3 years….we gave in to him. I will not celebrate that.
