Your Morning Dump… Add Jason Terry to the long list of potential shooting guards

Chuck - Red's Army July 1, 2012 Celtics News, Ray Allen, The Morning Dump 11 Comments

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

Faced with the possibility of losing Ray Allen, the Boston Celtics are pursuing Dallas Mavericks free-agent guard Jason Terry, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Celtics are preparing themselves for the possible loss of Allen, and began the process of recruiting Terry after midnight ET Saturday, league sources said.

The Mavericks still have interest in re-signing Terry. The Los Angeles Clippers also have emerged as suitors, sources said. The Celtics also have interest in Los Angeles Clippers free agent guard Nick Young, sources said.

Terry, 34, averaged 15 points for the Mavericks this season.

Yahoo! Sports – Adrian Wojnarowski

Jason Terry would be a good, short-term replacement for Ray Allen. He’s a scorer with big game experience. Plus, he’s content with a sixth man role.

The likely problem with Terry is the contract. He made it clear to Dallas that he wants a long term deal, probably something along the lines of three years.

Terry is durable – he played in 63 of 66 games last season and has never played fewer than 74 games in a season during his career. One caveat – last season’s shooting percentage (42%) was his lowest in the past 7 seasons.

The list of potential shooting guards also includes; Jamal Crawford, OJ Mayo, Nick Young, Kirk Hinrich and Sonny Weems. There are so many variables, it’s impossible to predict which direction Danny Ainge might go. I’m intrigued with Mayo. Maybe it’s his youth, ball-handling skills and overall potential.

WEEI’s Paul Flannery offered this tweet this morning: “Don’t throw Ray Allen out the door just yet. C’s are trying to convince him to stay.”

On another note: the Globe’s Gary Washburn says “the Celtics are expected to meet with Brandon Bass’s representatives this weekend to begin discussions on a potential extension.”

We received an inquiry from a fan wondering about the status of the Celtics secondary free agents; Mickael Pietrus, Keyon Dooling, and Marquis Daniels. Don’t expect any news about those players, at least until the dust settles on the bigger names.

I am of the opinion that Pierce should restructure. He’s not worth $17 this coming year. Take $3 million off each of the next two years and add a third year at $9 million (probably not worth that in 3 years, but). Pierce gets one more year, franchise gets a little more buying power.

How’s Ainge gonna do that, exactly? You can’t amnesty a player and then sign him again afterwards.

      • Jason

Players can’t restructure with their own teams?

        • dombili

Nope. If we amnesty Pierce, we won’t be able to sign with him again for a year.

Why doesn’t nobody talk about Lou Williams?? He’s young a huge contricutor of the bench (finished 2nd on Sixth Man of The Year this season), can be signed for way less than O.J. Mayo and is more regular than O.J. If it was me I would go for Lou, for me it looks like a steal..

I’m sure most teams would love to have Williams- I’d be surprised if Philly lets him go, AND he’ll ptob be the most expensive in the bunch. “The Jet”? I’d rather have Ray back,,,,,,Terry is too old. Nick Young is also out there……he can (and often does) shoot.

Terry>Ray, Terry’s always been able to create his shot OFF THE DRIBBLE something that Ray struggles with now, the only problem is his height (6’2) along with Bradley (6’2) makes for small 2 guard rotation.

  • RedsLoveChild

He`s older than Pierce…his “jet” imitation is annoying as hell…and his decline is well under-way.

    Keep searching.

On a side-note. I know it will not happen much if at all but the thought of MELO and STEAMER on the court at the same time sounds quite entertaining. Talk about irritating an offense.
