Rumor: Celtics offering Bass for OJ Mayo

Chuck - Red's Army June 29, 2012 Brandon Bass, Rumors 17 Comments

CSNNE’s Sherrod Blakely has this information, per a league source:

A league source said the C’s continue to be enamored with the 6-foot-5 shooting guard, and are considering making another run at him.

The source said no deal is imminent, but it appears the Celtics are willing to offer up Brandon Bass via a sign and trade.

Bass, who opted out of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, would have to agree to such a deal.

While the trading away of Bass might seem a bit lopsided at first, consider this.

By moving him for Mayo, the C’s address the need for a scoring guard who can compliment Rajon Rondo’s playmaking and Avery Bradley’s prowess as a defender.

In addition, it frees up the Celtics to focus on adding a big man with one of their first round picks.

My initial reaction is that I don’t like this deal. But… what are the Celtics going to do with Bass if KG doesn’t play center next year? Are you going to pay Bass $6-7 million to come off the bench? Don’t forget about Jeff Green.

Mayo is an athletic wing who can score. Not known for busting his butt on defense. He only fits if Ray Allen goes.

The Globe’s Gary Washburn has a source who claims this rumored trade talk is untrue.

UPDATE: I’ve been told Sherrod Blakely refuted his own report during last night’s draft coverage on CSNNE. It doesn’t appear that CSNNE made the changes to the web story.

    Ugh.

O.J. Mayo and Josh Smith are two players I really enjoy watching. Naturally I was ecstatic to hear Celtics were pursuing both. I don’t think anything will come of the Josh Smith talks though simply because I dont know what we could realistically offer. Im all for O.J. Mayo though, we need that high volume scorer off the bench.

As much as I like Ray and Brandon, this would be a good basketball move.

How so? We need a jump shooter who doesn’t play defense (and isn’t particularly likable)?

      • uh huh

How so? He’s a better defender than Ray’s ever been and Ray Ray worked out just fine and he’s a better scorer/shooter than either Rajon or Avery. Perfect 6th man. And how exactly is he unlikable?

If this deal goes threw Allen is gone. I say keep Allen and use bass on a sign and trade for something else. Maybe ersova from the bucks?

    Mayo & Melo!

Other than bringing back KG, the biggest priority for the Celtics this offseason is not overpaying Brandon Bass. Bass at $6 mil+ is a terrible contract. Purely financially, this is a good move. From a basketball standpoint, I agree with Chuck…probably only makes sense if Ray is really gone.

Mayo would fill out a nice 3-guard rotation, but this leaves a huge hole at the 4. I like Josh Smith too, but he’s got another year on his deal, and if the Laker’s couldn’t get him for Gasol, how is DA gonna work that magic?

danny did good considering there weren’t any big trades last night. competition should be hard core w/the youngsters. definitely need to a shooting guard, kg, center, and depth. ray w/be solid 6th man.

Why would Memphis want Bass? They are loaded up front. They really need a knock down shooter to space the floor.

We should go after someone like Josh Smith, maybe, but I don’t really see the point of chasing Mayo. I’d rather have Allen. I’d rather see Moore get more playing time. It just seems like Ainge wanted Harden, couldn’t get him, and hasn’t been able to get it out of his mind ever since.

I don’t mind Mayo for Bass, if we can get a decent center to put KG back at PF. Green and Mayo off the bench with this/last years rooks.

I don’t know why they would want Bass. He was an upgrade from Baby but apparently his ego is the same.

      • uh huh

oh ya? how do you know that? all indications are that’s an outright lie. And if you’re only saying that cuz dude opted out to get more money, you’re the worst kinda person.

        • charlie

I meant that I don’t think he is worth more money – and I don’t seem to be alone in that thought. Do you see a real upside to him? Do you think he will develop a lot more? If we could keep him for the same money then OK, no problem. If we are trying to really upgrade the team then I think we should think twice. How much does Baby make?
