KG, Rondo among top 10 jerseys sold internationally

John - Red's Army (@RedsArmy_John) June 21, 2012 Celtics News, Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo 16 Comments

The NBA today released its most popular jerseys sold outside of the U.S.  And I’m not sure whether I should be surprised by this, but KG was fourth and Rajon Rondo was seventh.  Here’s the top 10:

  1.  Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers
  2.  Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls
  3. LeBron James, Miami Heat
  4. Kevin Garnett, Boston Celtics
  5. Dwight Howard, Orlando Magic
  6.  Dwyane Wade, Miami Heat
  7. Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics
  8. Carmelo Anthony, New York Knicks
  9.  Blake Griffin, Los Angeles Clippers
  10.  Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder

Here’s the odd thing:  I though KG’s appeal would be fueled by big sales in China due to his Anta deal but Rondo was in the top 5 and KG wasn’t.  KG is fourth in Europe and Latin America, topping Dwight Howard and Dwyane Wade.

Look at the names these guys are ahead of overseas:  Dwight Howard, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Blake Griffin and Kevin Durant.  These are all heavily marketed NBA stars that, in the United States, have higher profiles than KG or Rondo.  This just goes to show the power of the Celtics Green.

And I’ll just toss this one thing in there:  Celtics playoff games draw big numbers and their stars are among the top-selling jerseys in the world.  Can we please stop any talk about conspiracies AGAINST the Celtics?  I don’t care if Kobe Bryant becomes commissioner, there’s no way the league would intentionally hold down a cash cow like the Boston Celtics.

I know that when the 80s Cs were dominating, the sport became popular in the Philippines, and if you ask anybody who grew up there and is over 30 I’m willing to bet they are huge celtics fans. Even those living in NYC. All 4 people I have met that fit that description are Cs fans. 4 for 4 is 100%. 100% of Philippino basketball fans are celtics or bust

in Italy, for example, if you walk into a regular sport shop chances are you only find kobe, lebron and KG shirts (plus bargnani and gallinari ones) and that’s pretty much it.
together with that I can think of a bunch of celtics fan. pretty much anyone under 50 years of age is a potential celtics fan due to the original or the reformed big 3.

Celtics Jerseys are big in the Philippines, even beggars wear torn up ones.

It’s just that, we can’t afford your ridiculously expensive adidas jerseys. (a $ 50 adidas replica revo 30 jersey can feed a family for 2 weeks), so we just buy the fake $6 to $8 ones, therefore it is not added in the records.

The Celtics and Lakers have a larger following than most NBA teams. I’m not at all surprise that KG is 4th and Rondo is 7th, internationally. As for Dwight Howard, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Blake Griffin and Kevin Durant. ” These are all heavily marketed NBA stars that, in the United States, have higher profiles than KG or Rondo”. I doubt that. When KG, was younger and in his prime he was extremely marketable. As far as Rondo his profile is only getting higher.

It depends on endorsements and etc.

Celtics jerseys are big in Turkey, too. I myself contributed by buying some of them (including Garnett and Rondo jerseys). They’ll sell a lot more as Celtics are gonna visit Istanbul this summer.

John, I think Mike “The Scottsman” Munger, would disagree. But I agree with your argument. This season especially, heading into the NBA playoffs. The NBA played endless commercials featuring Celtics players. In the post-season commercials such as Pierce, Adidas and 2012 Celtics BIG Playoffs, and they were a 4th seed.

Also, the Celtics/Heat ECF series set record numbers each game since 2003. So much for the league hating the cELTICS, but the refs and Stern still suck! lol
