Recap: Celtics pat 76ers on the head, put them to bed

Chuck - Red's Army April 8, 2012 Uncategorized 14 Comments

Some might say it's a tad too early to write off the 76ers, but I'm gonna do it. The Celtics stomped all over the defenseless 76ers tonight, 103-79, and increased their lead in the Atlantic Division to 3 games.

Like me in a crowd of single ladies, the Celtics couldn't miss. Boston shot 58% from the field and 46% from 3. Straight money.

The Celtics continue to dominate with defense. They held Philly to 38% FG. The national pundits can continue to criticize Boston for their lack of offensive consistency, but at some point, they will have to address this dominant defense. Defense wins in the playoffs.

The Celtics kicked ass in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Seriously.

How about this statistical gem from ESPN Boston's Chris Forsberg - "C's second unit over the first six minutes of 2nd Q last two nights have outscored opponents 29-4. Only one FG allowed during those 12 mins." Call it the Ray Allen effect.

Rajon Rondo continues to dish. 15 more assists tonight. He had 9 in the 3rd quarter. He also made that ridiculous fadeaway jumper (seen above – courtesy Jose3030). Yes, he was sloppy at times (5 TOs), especially in the 1st half.

How's this for a stat line: KG 20 points, 8-11 FG, 6 rebounds and +29.

WEEI's Paul Flannery tweeted out a good point: "The Celtics have 3 more weeks to convince the officials that the Stiemer can play defense without fouling." The dude is playing great defense (2 points, 3 rebounds, 3 blocks, 5 fouls), but has yet to earn the respect of officials (who make blind calls without really watching the play).

Hope everyone had a great holiday!
Nice to give Philly a beating finally and practically knock them out of the playoffs at the same time. Loved having Ray’s scoring punch off the bench and Avery just keeps rolling- he was all over Lou Williams. Typical of a Doug Collins team to start the season well and be burned out in the 2nd half.

Just home from a great game. Was very impressed w/that 2nd unit tonight. Especially the defense. Sasha is finally getting some more confidence in his shot. It’s been an issue all year. He passes-up open looks and it drives Doc (and fans) crazy. It was especially fun at the Garden tonight to watch KG. After he erupted in the 1st half, Philly started double-teaming him in 2nd half. He calmly waited and found either Avery cutting or Sasha for 3. He literally picked-apart Philly’s defense all night. Rondo, KG & Paul all played under 30 minutes tonight which is huge with this grueling schedule of back-to-backs coming up. Take that Philly.

Philly just got buried tonight. Pretenders.

Cant wait for Pietrus to come back! :)
Avery, Allen, Pietrus, Garnett, Stiemsma should do good second unit

i cant help but imagine if the season started normally and Wilcox and Green didnt have heart problems.
bench would be like avery, pietrus, green, wilcox, stiemsma
probably a blessing too. Avery and Stiemsma improved drastically because of the lack of depth of the celtics

The second quarter, second team juggernaut, in the last few games is something to behold. This is old time Celtics’ basketball. Steamer has been tremendous and, once the refs, leave him alone, he’ll be even more dominant. Avery played ON-MAN defense on Lou Williams, not this on-ball crap everyone always talks about. I bet he knows what kind of chewing gum Lou Williams was chewing tonight. The starters were all great and I’ll post once without complaining about anything Rondo did. It’s hard but I’m working on it. ;-)

This season may do more to teach Doc to be a real coach than any he has ever had! By being forced to utilize his bench, he may learn that the benefits far out-weigh the loss of a few regular season games. Avery and “Steamer” would not have developed as they have and Sasha would have worn out the bench by now. The Old Celtics would be dead and in the grave and a crowd would be blaming the shortened season. There is hope for Doc yet!

I don’t mind people bitching about Rondo. What I mind is that there is no acknowledgement that he is constantly under the microscope precisely because he is the best, most important player on the team.

Speaking of which, let’s not completely bury JJJ and Moore, Doc…

  • James Eisenman

Well, I don’t think Rondo is the best or the most important player on the team, Paul. I appreciate his gifts but his deficits really bug me. Yesterday, the gifts outweighed the deficits, so I let him off the hook for the Bad Rondo moments. Everyone has weaknesses in their game. The difference with Rondo’s is that his are mostly under his control while most everyone else on this team have weaknesses that they can’t control. Yesterday, his positives outweighed his negatives so much that I decided not to comment about them.
