Pierce got tossed for swearing at Wade

Pierce tossed

Official Dan Crawford spoke to an AP reporter after the game and explained the two technical fouls on Paul Pierce.

I suggest you sit down before you read any further.  Maybe grab a drink.  Do some yoga or meditation.

Ok?

Here it is.

Q: What did Paul Pierce do to merit the 2nd technical with 7:00 remaining?

Crawford: "It's what we call a verbal taunt. He directed profanity towards (Dwyane) Wade. And in the rulebook, that is a verbal taunt. And it just so happened to be Pierce's second technical foul."

Q: What did Pierce do for the technical after the (James) Jones foul with 7:59 left?

Crawford: "The first technical foul, it was contact during a dead ball. He approached Jones and got right in his face. There wasn't a head-butt, but he got right into his face after a hard foul."

Yes.  You read that correctly.  Pierce directed a profanity at Wade.  He swore at him.  That warranted a second technical and an ejection.

HEY…

That's a tech on you for your reaction to that.  You're ejected from your room.  Go outside for the rest of the night.

I'll repeat what I said on Twitter after the explanation came out:  If players got techs every time they swore at each other, every player would be tossed from every game… and KG would be executed.

Props to Doc Rivers for telling it like it is during the game:

100% correct Doc.

There's nothing more to say.  Chuck was right on in the recap.  The refs didn't cost the C's the game.  The Celtics did a great job of losing on their own.  But a few calls… the second Pierce tech in particular… were atrocious and need to be addressed.

i wouldnt blame the entire thing on the refs..but every time there was a run made by the celtics..the refs either made a horrible call or missed a call that would have gone the celtics way and it swung momentum…started with the 3rd foul on rondo..he had his hand on the ball..not sure how that was a foul..the flagrant on JO came at a great time..c’s were making a push..turned into a 5 point play for miami..and then after another run..lebron caught the ball and scored..clearly traveled..doc blew up about it and no call again..
james jones horse collared paul..should have been 2 and the ball..and wade body checked paul for setting a screen..again 2 and the ball.
every time the celtics made a little bit of a push the refs threw sand in the gears.

refs did not lose the game for the C’s but they certainly prevented them from winning it.

Ya, how about that flagrant on JO for the elbow but just a regular foul on Jones for grabbing Pierce’s head. That was some incredibly bad reffing. I mean, no one’s arguing that the Celtics lost that game with or without the bad calls, but it’s also hard to argue that wasn’t bad for moral.

give credit where credit is due- the refs got the game right. there were a few early ticky-tac whistles, but the c’s struggled to score. they had 0 rythem. i figure they would get their ass kicked in game 1 and regroup to split 1/1. time to step things up

How many times have we heard and seen over the years (remember Perk) that the refs are always reticent to call a second tech on a player, especially during a playoff game because they don’t want to upset the competitive balance of the game? That’s not in the rulebook but it’s supposedly league policy. How the hell does calling ANY tech for profanity fit the NBA today when it’s rarely called during the regular season, never mind it being a SECOND tech on a star player, during a playoff game, with only 6 minutes left in the game??? That’s just batshit crazy for the league to not address it with this inexperienced ref – totally inexcusable. The Celts lost the game anyway but the refs failed the league.

I said to my dad before tip off, “Watch Ed Malloy, he loves to make dramatic, flashy, look-at-me calls.” And what do you know…

I lost a little respect for Wade for last 3 games against C’s. I need to sleep this game over and maybe explain this some other time, but LBJ from now on at least to me more is likable, if that’s even possible. He is what he is, whatever that is, but this guy become just wow!
    Wow…

the thing that pissed me off most about this was that the refs were being so “technical” about the reason they ejected pierce. If you are going to go by the rulebook, then go by the rulebook for every call. The rulebook also says that any unnecessary contact above the head is a flagrant foul. Just ridiculous. And hopefully the Celtics starters can overcome how bad their bench is.

Again, you people are only half right. While the Celtics did plenty on their own to give this game away – every time Jeff Green or whoever was supposed to be guarding James Jones, left him wide open for 5 threes, yes that would have changed the game. But the calls were one-sided and attrocious and, if not for them, the Celtics win despite everything else. These idiotic explanations for tossing a key player out of a playoff game, the ridiculous 5-point play caused by the non-existant flagrant foul by JO, the calls for Dwayne Wade every time he drove to the basket and the lack of calls every time the same contact was made on Pierce, Green and Rondo when they drove to the basket, did change the momentum and outcome of the game as well. I’m not forgetting Rondo’s refusal to finish off oa fast breaks or drives just because Lebron blocked one of his shots or his 4th quarter turnovers. But this 32-17 referee performance ranks up there with a 24-7 4th quarter in Game 7 last year. Two games that go down in the annals of the Earl Strom Game 4 debacle in 1987. You guys are all too young to remember but I never forget when my team has been gang-raped by a referee squad. Red gave him hell about it and you can’t let these bozos off either.
