When Paul Pierce stepped on the court at Madison Square Garden last night, there was a gleam in his eye. A look that said, "I'm not fu**ing around tonight y'all.." And sure enough, he wasn't.
Notching his 8th game at MSG with 30 or more points, The Truth passed Kobe Bryant to lead active NBA players. Pierce finished with 38 pts, including 6 of 8 from behind the arc. Bryant and Lebron get all the headlines of course, and the fans love it when they come to NYC, but our Captain plays pretty well there himself. Since the 2006 regular season, Pierce is averaging 24.6 ppg. at "The Mecca."
Paul's 1st 30+ point game at MSG was during the 2000-01 season, his 3rd in the NBA. His 31 points helped defeat a Knicks team who's star forwards, Alan Houston & Larry Johnson, struggled to go a combined 4 for 19. C's triumphed 92-86. The next time P would go for 30 or more at MSG was his then career-high 46 point explosion in 2002. The Celtics won the early season game 117-107.
In 2006, P-Double did it twice- 1st, a 39 point performance in November, which helped the C's win 122-118. Then, in December, he gave the MSG crowd an early Xmas gift of 31 in a 97-90 win for Boston. In January of 2009, the Celts lost for the first time when he scored 30 or more, as he dropped 31 in a 100-88 loss. The sixth 30+ game came happened last season as Truth went for 33 in an OT win at MSG. I was there as the Big Ticket hit a jumper at the buzzer for a 107-105 C's victory.
Paul tied Kobe's record with a 32 point performance this past December in one of the best games of the season. Celtics came out victorius (as seen in the above video) 118-116 on P's game-winner with 00.4 left. So what will Paul do tomorrow in what could be the Celtics last game at MSG this year? Stay tuned…
