Your Morning Dump… Where last night was “coach’s porn”

RedsArmyAdmin April 1, 2011 Uncategorized 10 Comments

Doc on a laptop PS Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

Perhaps the greatest affirmation of Rondo’s return is the fact that he took nine shots from beyond nine feet — and knocked down six of them (66.7 percent). He entered the game shooting just 34.6 percent from 10-15 feet and 38.0 percent from 16-23 feet.

“That was terrific,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers told reporters. “Hell, I’m going to say it. I probably shouldn’t, but I call it coach’s porn. We kept moving the ball, and Rondo kept taking shots and I was yelling that jokingly to them. We were laughing, because we had a joke about it that I won’t get into. It was terrific.”

WEEI: Rondo and "coach's porn"

That was a thing of beauty last night, wasn't it?  Just makes you realize that all of the hand-wringing, the angry tweets, the insane analysis… it's all rather meaningless.  Because last night everyone woke up and started playing… especially Rajon Rondo.

The C's put up 84 shots… almost 11 more than their average for the month.  And that's directly attributable to Rondo taking layups when they're there.  Honestly, the single most frustrating aspect of his game is his outright refusal sometimes to take a layup.  Last night he was attacking, getting to the rim, and taking the shot that was there.  It opened things up for everyone else.  Why do you think KG got hot and ended up hitting 9 of 12 shots?  Because he was wide open.  Because San Antonio HAD to collapse on Rondo… because he was demolishing them.

It's all so simple.  When Rondo attacks, the offense is infinitely better.  When Rondo shows a willingness to score when you let him, defenses have to react.  And when they do, they're dead.  Because then the ball gets whipped out and by the time the C's are done moving it around, someone who's really really good has the ball with no one around him.

That's coach's porn.

Giggidy.

On Page 2: Jermaine O'Neal feels good about his return

“He played well,” coachDoc Rivers said of O’Neal. “That three-point play was huge. I was just happy to see him defensively moving very well. The first thing he said after the game was that the speed of the game is different than being in a gym by himself.”

Added O’Neal: “The only surprise I had was the speed of the game. When you’re gone for three months, no conditioning that you can do will set you up for what you have to go through out there.

“It felt good, though, felt strong. It’s like muscle memory. To be honest, I feel very positive about the first game back.”

Herald: Jermaine O'Neal's feeling good

5 points, an offensive rebound and an assist in 11 minutes is not a bad start when you've missed three months.  The overall reaction to Jermaine has been positive so far.

And with Krstic going down (out tonight, MRI scheduled for tomorrow) once again the C's are short handed at the 5 spot.  So we're going to need Jermaine to start getting his conditioning back pretty quickly.

He looks good and he seems to be moving well.  Let's just hope he can keep it up.  And let's hope Shaq can come back in a few days.

look everyone needs to relax. Have the Celts lost games they shouldn’t? Sure.
Rondo is what drives this team and he has already proved his salt come playoffs, its Rondo time. He switches gears.
So, until he proves other wise, I like our chances. Lets not forgot that Rondo has the “IT” factor.
Lebron doesn’t have “it”, he just has a mountain of talent. JO look WAY more mobile.
IS Delonte West the most under appreciated guard in the NBA. Like Tommy says last night, you have to love what Delonte brings because he does everything well and somethings great. Paul in attack mode is good to see.
Ray is in slump, I’v been waiting for one. Better now than the playoffs. Big baby has really improved being strong with the ball. He had one play with 3 spurs all swiping at it, went right through it and laid it in. We need to hold on to him. KG when he is knocking down 19 footers, Celts are impossible to beat, you can run “elbow” with him and Rondo all day. How are you going to defend it? You can’t, as SA saw last night on 3 straight possessions.
good win, but to be fair SA has lost 5 straight.
    Shaq fu where are you?

Rondo, Truth and BBD were all aggressive, KG reaped the benefits. Awesome performance by the Cs. Great to see them adjust and cut off Parker’s fast break party.

my favorite stat from last night: rondo had 0 turnovers

I would definitely consider myself a die-hard celtics fan, as i watch about 72-75 games a year realistically since 1999. However, I am a realistic one. I’m not saying this is true for every fan, but MANY, MANY celtics fans are reacting so strongly to each and every thing that happens with this team…every game. Yes, the trade was bad. I was one of those fans that was (and still am) worried about this team since the trade.
Do they have a shot at winning it all? Of course. As I half-jokingly (at the time) texted my friend a month ago…if Nenad Kristic does not play, they have a good chance of winning it all. It’s simple, the defense with him in the game decreases tenfold. They are absolutely porous on defense. People on WEEI talk about how some Celtic fans are overrating Kendrick Perkins as a player…Bull shit. No one is saying he has Bill Russell stats. No one says he is Dwight Howard. What he is, is a big man that is tough and made it possible for the Celtics to play the defense they want to play. This win showed me that what I jokingly said a month ago, actually is true. If Kristic isn’t on the floor, the Celtics are a good team. Look at last nights box score: every quarter after he was injured the defense got better. Thank god Jermaine is back.
Lastly, RedsArmy, don’t go crazy with this win. It was a great win and showed that the Celtics can play with and beat anyone…but we already knew that. Yes, Rondo attacked more than he did in some of those games since the trade, but you’re failing to realize that most of the reason they were so good last night was because he just simply MADE more shots from mid-range. I recall several games over the Celtics bad streak where he was 2/11, 2/12, 4/15. Don’t confuse the fact that he was simply making more shots last night by saying that was way more aggressive attacking the hoop. There were other games he was just as aggressive shooting but just didn’t make shots. Clearly, the Celtics are unstoppable when he is making them. Let’s hope it continues and that Krstic continues to sit.

” Let’s hope it continues and that Krstic continues to sit..”
little dramatic. I wouldn’t say he is ten fold worse. He is still learning the rotations. Perk could do
the rotations in his sleep. Nenad will be fine.
He is still a 7 footer. We need everybody on the roster ready and able. The only one I can agree that can sit is Avery.
He is not ready at all.
C’mon dude. There is no silver bullet theory.

Jake, you’re NOT a die hard fan. I watch all 82 and some of the wins twice. I watch pre season and even summer league. The Celtics need Krstic, much as the Red Sox need middle relievers to eat up innings. In Nenad’s case, the C’s need Krstic to eat up minutes, score a few easy points, draw fouls on the opponents with his upfakes, and hit the 15-17 foot jumper (a facet of his game that we have not seen enough). Nenad, is not D Howard, but neither is he a scrub. He’s an active 7′ European center with great hands who knows how to score around the hoop with either hand. And he’s got a nice face up jumper. His defense and rebounding have not been great, but the Celtics only gave up 90 points per game while he was starting. The problem is the Celtics also need another Tough defensive 5 to complement him.
Now JO is back and he played very well in limited minutes. Until Shaq comes back, Baby will have to play big minutes at 5. That’s bad because not only is baby undersized at 5, now he won’t be available to back up KG at 4. Nor will he be fresh at the end if games when Doc relies on him to play 5. Unless the Celtics can rely on Shaq and JO to combine for 48 minutes, they will miss Krstic. I just hope he’s not out for long.
You may have some personal antagonism toward Krystic because he replaced Perk, and Nenad is not nearly as tough. But Krstic is a major upgrade over Perk offensively, and unless we can rely on Shaq and JO te combine for 48 minutes a night, the C’s will miss him if he’s out for any extended time.

We’re all Rondo believers here in Celtic land, but all have noticed Rondo’s funk since the Perk trade. Last night’s game was a thing of beauty, and many are now saying, “the Rondo is BACK!” But, maybe, something even more important happened.
The most glaring deficiency in Rondo’s game has been lack of a consistent jumper. While feeling frustrated by this chink in his armor, many of us have compared this problem to other point guards similar problems early in their careers (Chauncy Billups, etc), and have expected that Rondo would eventually work his way out of this bad part of his game. AND, when he did so, he would elevate his game into potential all-time-great status.
Personally, I have never seen Rondo hit the jumper with the consistency that he did last night. Is it possible that Rondo got over the hump last night?
Maybe he did…only time will tell. But, one thing is certain, when he does finally get over that hump, it will all start with a game like last night.
Let’s keep our collective fingers crossed.

rondos been in a funk the whole season. he cared way too much about assists in the beginning part of the season and teams adjusted accordingly. Opposing defenses stopped playing him and it was basically playing 4 on5 on offense bc of rondo’s inability to shoot. If he can attack the basket and actually finish strong instead of trying to get his beloved stat of assists it makes the team much more deadly bc they have to respect him which leads to garnett pierce and allen getting open shots. He still needs to improve his man to man defense before the playoffs as well as make sure he doesnt get lazy with walking up the ball or get lazy with his passes and make one handed passes for no reason. All in all yesterday was a promising game for rondo hopefully we see more of it tonight.

Great win, yes we can agree they play down to the competition. But now, it looks like our interior defense is resting on the creaky bodies of the O’Neals. I am not confident with this fact in play.
Also, why doesn’t KG guard Duncan down the stretch? Same thing happens vs. NY and Stoudemire.

    Banner18,
appreciate you telling me how big of a fan I am. You and I are very close, so you do know a ton about me to judge how much I know of the sport and this. I also watched every preseason and summer league game, that means nothing. I don’t consider that to make me more or less of a Celtic fan. I bet those 8 extra games you watch per year give you a VAST knowledge of the team that I am totally unaware of. That Washington Wizards game I missed back in December to study for my exam? Shit, that really showed you something about this team didn’t it? Makes you a better fan than I am, that’s for sure. I’m a die hard fan, but also a college student-athlete, so those 8 extra games you get to watch I don’t have time for. Guess that was where I missed the part about Krstic being solid. There is absolutely no chance the Celtics win an NBA championship with Krstic starting at center. It’s called being realistic. First off, he hasn’t played well offensively. Second, I couldn’t care less about offense with this team. This team used to be able to fall back on something when the offense was sputtering: tough minded, physical defense. Now they have to find that again, and it will be with the 2 O’Neals…NOT Krstic. He simply doesn’t have what it takes to battle in the post for a 7 game series…why do you think Oklahoma City let him go? Btw, next time you try to claim to me that you know more about BASKETBALL than I do….stay away from the Red Sox references….I don’t know anything about nor do I give a shit about baseball.
Get your head out of your ass man, I’m not trying to compare myself to any other Celtics fan. I’m just telling it how I see it as a knowledgeable student of the game, and a die hard Celtics fan. Thanks for the personal attack though, hope you proved it to yourself that you’re their #1 guy.
