GreenLights: G58 Celtics @ Jazz

Jay March 2, 2011 Uncategorized Comments Off

The Celtics capped off a four game road trip with an impressive win in Utah, a place that has not been too friendly in recent seasons.  They had not won there since the 2008 championship season so any time they can escape with a win, take it.  It was the second game for newcomers Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic.  "Kris" as Kevin Garnett likes to call him, had a very good first quarter, dropping 10 points, including being initiated into the green alley-oop club via Rajon Rondo.

Green looked solid setting up shop in the low post, and even drilled a nice jab-step fade-away jumper just like the late Reggie Lewis did.  His defense however remains below average at best.  Frequently his man was easily able to drive by him and his lateral movement leaves something to be desired.  Ironically he had the defensive play of the game, doing his best LeBron James impression by chasing down Gordon Heyward for the block.

Ray Allen and Paul Pierce drilled some huge bombs late in the fourth, while Rondo iced it with a jump shot of all things.  Check below for the GreenLights, but I excluded Big Baby's defense because it was by far the worst defensive performance he's had all year.

Q1: The game gets started with a beautiful give-and-go as KG dumps off a nice no-look bounce pass to the cutting Rondo for two.  Other highlights include:

  • After a timeout, Pierce finds KG for a pick-and-pop for two
  • KG with good defense on Paul Milsap, forcing the missed jumper
  • Rondo slashing into the lane for two
  • Pierce with the big rebound off an Al Jefferson missed shot
  • Krstic drawing the foul in the post on Milsap, making both free throws
  • Krstic with good post defense on Big Al
  • Back-to-back threes by Ray, sandwiched by solid team defense in between
  • KG blocking Milsap, leading to Rondo finding Krstic for a nice spin and drop-step for the lay-in
  • Krstic with a rebound, starting a fast break that ends with Rondo finding Ray for a corner three
  • Ray with good defense in the passing lane to steal the ball, then Krstic helps Big Al tip in the KG missed jumper
  • Great team defense, highlighted by KG on Milsap, then Krstic comes up with the steal (off a deflection), leading to the Rondo/Krstic alley-oop
  • More solid defense, leading to a KG baseline jumper
  • Green with a nice jump hook in the post over CJ Miles for two
  • Krstic with the work on the boards, then getting rewarded on offense by scoring down low
  • Krstic with a nice solid foul, showing he knows how to foul with purpose

Q2: The second quarter gets started with an Avery Bradley jumper, followed by Bradley rushing up the court off a Jazz made basket for two and a foul.  Bradley would miss the free throw, but other highlights include:

  • Green with the rebound off the Miles missed jumper
  • Green with good defense on Heyward, but gets called for a questionable foul
  • solid team defense for 24 seconds forcing a badly missed Big Al jumper, then Bradley playing great one-on-one defense
  • KG finding Pierce in the low post for two and a foul… he would make the free throw.
  • Bradley finding Pierce for a corner three
  • Rondo snaking his way through the lane for a lay-up
  • More great lane-clogging defense, followed up with a Rondo deflection
  • Pierce taking Andrei Kirilenko to the paint, drawing the foul and making both free throws
  • Pierce working Kirilenko again down low, drawing another foul and making both free throws
  • Pierce getting the kind roll on the rim for two
  • Pierce working Kirilenko in the post yet again, this time kicking it out to KG for the jumper
  • KG wih great defense on Milsap, forcing the turnover and creating a fast break that end up with Ray getting fouled and making two free throws
  • Pierce barely missing a jumper to end the half

Q3: The second half begins with Rondo bowling a bounce pass down low to KG, who knocks down a jump-hook over Milsap.  Other highlights include:

  • Krstic with some good defense on Big Al, forcing a miss, followed up by KG grabbing a couple of rebounds
  • KG doing work in the post, scoring a fade-away for two
  • After Devin Harris goes coast to coast, Rondo gets in back in a hurry
  • Krstic forcing another miss from Big Al, KG grabs another board
  • Rondo weaves through the lane to score a floater, then finds KG on the baseline for a jumper
  • Ray gets the steal then slams it down with two-hands
  • Rondo driving to the lane for another lay-up
  • Big Baby draws the charge on Milsap
  • Big Baby with the nice jump hook in the lane over Milsap
  • Ray finding KG on the baseline for another jumper
  • Rondo to Ray off a basic "Floppy" play
  • Solid defense forcing another Big Al missed jump hook
  • Krstic drawing a foul in the post, making 1 of 2 free throws
  • Rondo canning a jumper from the left elbow

Q4: The final quarter begins with Green taking it to the hoop and missing, but Big Baby is there for the tip-in.  Other highlights include:

  • Green with a sweet jab-step, fade away jumper over Heyward
  • Green with the amazing chase-down block on Heyward
  • Rondo with another floater in the lane for two
  • Pierce drawing the charge on Earl Watson
  • Krstic forcing another miss by Big Al, Green gets the rebound
  • Pierce finding Davis on a screen/roll, Big Baby gets fouled and makes both free throws
  • A frenetic 30 seconds of hoopage, ending with KG getting fouled and making both free throws
  • Solid team defense forcing a Big Al miss, then KG finds Ray cutting to the hoop for the lay-up
  • Ray drilling a three behind a solid Garnett screen
  • Rondo finding the cutting Glen Davis who gets fouled and makes 1 of 2 free throws
  • The C's get away with a foul, which eventually leads to a crushing Ray three in transition
  • Big Al and KG exchange pleasantries, but once you're in KG's torture chamber, he's got you… he lured Big Al into a travel
  • Harris misses a three, then Rondo finds a WIDE OPEN Pierce in transition with yet another killer three
  • Harris travels on the ensuing possession, then Ray drains a tough fall-away jumper off a broken possession
  • Rondo's game sealing jumper
  • Pierce puts icing on the winning cake with two free throws, then Rondo adds extra frosting by stealing the ball on Utah's final possession.
