Enemy Chatter: The Celtics act tough, but aren’t really tough

I often wonder what opposing teams, their beat reporters and bloggers are saying about the Celtics after playing the Celtics. Here's a dose of 'enemy chatter' from Orlando.

Sentinel: Is the team tougher now?

(Magic GM) Otis Smith: Tough is relative. Tough to who? Is anybody tough?

Sentinel: One could argue the Celtics are tough.

Otis Smith: They act tough. They're not really tough. They act tough.

Orlando Sentinel

That's bulletin board material if I've ever seen it.

I get that Smith doesn't want to insinuate that the Celtics are a tougher team than his Magic. But you don't need to take a swipe at the Cs to accomplish that. I think everyone will agree that Boston is one of the most physical, mentally tough teams in the NBA.

And while we're on the subject of toughness… maybe Smith should have a discussion with his always smiling center Dwight Howard. If I were a Magic fan, I would be pissed to see him joking around with opposing players, especially in crunch time.

Howard's already a shot blocking phenom. Imagine if players not only had to worry about getting their shot rejected, but also the possibility that a hard foul is coming. It's called intimidation. Look up the definition.

i thought Dwight Howard was just trying to get under KGs skin. he was def talking a lot.

  • Alex

    Same here.
Dwight seemed like he was talking trash while smiling, but honestly, that doesn’t really add intimidation >_>

  • Nora

I don’t think this guy should be talking about a team not being tough considering the team he is the GM for. Magic is Smiling Howard and a bunch 3 point shooters. Not a definition of ‘tough’

  • ya but did you see him on his last foul shot? he wasn’t smiling then.

    Celtics are fake tough?
Otis Smith is fake smart. If I made the personell moves otis does, I would avoid interviews.

Im sure hell be saying the same thing when we play them in the playoffs and Perk exposes Howard for being the prancing dandy that he is. (as well as frustrating him to the point that he throws his stupid elbow tantrums, huffs and puffs like a little girl.)

  • Caterpillar from Italy

He was not smiling, he’s the kind of grin he always has, and I don’t like it, ‘cos It gives me a sense of superiority he might feel and a kind of immunity for his flying elbows.
That said, I wish he might consider landing in Boston if he’ll get free agent in a couple of years.. 😉

  • Right, waving your handgun in the locker room is tough, whipping out your member for a porn star is also tough, as is bringing VC in house. So is having courtside fans that whine about their son getting run into by BBD, (we can’t let that one die).
He is correct that tough is relative, and that is a text book cop out statement, (what isn’t relative Otis?) And relatively speaking I’d suggest Ray Allen is the toughest Celtic, what he’s had to go through with his son is as tough as it gets. That has nothing to do with blocks or elbows.
HOWEVER, relative to the NBA, who is tougher? Certainly not Hedo and DH! So he said ‘tough is relative’, but then doesn’t say ‘in relation to xxxx they aren’t tough’. I can’t think of a trio I’d want to drive on that tops KG, Shaq and Perk.. throw BBD’s charges in and I’d say they are RELATIVELY tough as nails.
What do you want them to do? They lost players in the playoffs last year for getting into a scuffle, is that tough?

  • Venus

Um players have to worry about something else for Howard. It’s called the hard elbow and that’s a heck of a lot more intimidating than the hard foul.
As the Otis leave the trashtalking to the pros

  • Classless

Is Otis Smith serious? His team is the 2004 Indy Colts of basketball. All soft and finesse.
Now cue the dumb Magic fans talking up Brandon Bass like he’s good or something.

  • Tough is our story in the 2010 Playoffs.
Tough is being a 4th seed and taking out #s 1 and 2.
Tough is when we exiled the “King” when everyone never gave us a chance.
Tough is going into your building and taking games 1 and 2 in the ECF.
Tough is when ‘Sheed made super boy stumble in the post.
Tough is when we are the only team that can check super boy 1 on 1.
Tough is the anguish we carry from game 7.
Otis and Dwight will cry from our toughness in the 2011 postseason.
