Recap: Celtics beat Spurs in heart attack special

This game was freakin' nuts…

The Celtics beat the Spurs 105 – 103 in a game that featured two dramatic momentum swings over the final 2 minutes.

The Celtics execution from the 2:28 mark until the :50 second mark was perfect:

  • Rondo dishes to Glen Davis who finds Daniels for a lay-up
  • Rondo steal
  • Ray Allen nails a three
  • Glen Davis takes a charge
  • Rondo nails a floater
  • Ray Allen picks George Hill's pocket and scores on a lay-up

The 9-0 run put Boston up 105-96 and had everyone thinking the game was over. Wrong.

Aided by a couple of questionable non-foul calls, the Spurs rattled off 7 straight to make it a two point game. After the apocalypse Ray Allen missed two free throws with :08 seconds remaining, the Spurs had one final chance. Fortunately, Paul Pierce rejected a Manu Ginobli to seal the win.

Now to the stars of the game…

Rondo was spectacular: 12 points, 22 assists, 10 rebounds, 6 steals and 1 block in 43 minutes. He was awarded a rebound on the final play of the game after catching the ball following Pierce's block. Kinda cheesy… but he deserves it.

Ray Allen had 31 points on 13-16 FG. The Spurs were incapable of covering him on screens.

Glen Davis had 23 points on 10-18 FG.

Doc Rivers experimented with small line-ups and it worked. He went with Pierce and Daniels at the 4 for long stretches of the 2nd half.

The Spurs reserves dominated in the first half (21 points), but fizzled in the 2nd half (6 points).

  • rondo’s back great game

  • The refs made SURE this game went down to the wire. Rondo will get all the headlines, but Ray and Glen were huge as well. C’s are now 11-0 when SugarRay scores 20 or more. Hell of a game.

  • KY Celts fan

    Hell yeah, motherfuckers!

  • mollysdaddy

Does this game give us bragging rights as the best team in the league?

  • KY Celts fan

    I’m pretty darn excited!

  • EdanAharony

The Spurs are not as good as their record shows. 1st Knicks then the Celtics without Garnett, Perkins and Delonte West and before that the Magic humiliated them. That just shows how strong the East is and how weak the west is. Dallas was the only team to give a fight to the Lakers but now that Caron Butler is out the Lakers are a sure bet to be in the finals. Hells yes it does. Easily. We’ve beaten Miami twice, Spurs once and the only reason we lost that Dallas game was clearly because we were completely depleted in the front court. We won this game tonight without three key players. We’re the best and the deepest.
Btw, does anyone get the feeling whenever they see the ball in Marquis Daniel’s hands that somehow, someway it’s going in?

  • 12 pts, 22 ast, 10 reb, 6 stl, 1 blk: someone needs to make a bumber sticker of this.

  • Lee in Oregon

Great win. I’ve been a bit concerned about the C’s “playing down” to some of the weaker teams lately, nice to know they’re still ready for the league’s best. (And without KG). Nobody should be surprised if this isnt the finals match-up.

  • piecz

they made me heart attack but there was happy end, we won and i’m still alive

  • BRADinLA

I hope you’re right about the Lakers making it to the finals. They can’t catch up to us in the standings and we’d definitely have home court. Getting revenge for last year while I live just a couple miles from Staples Center would be glorious, GLORIOUS!

  • greenbeand

playing against the ref’s is not basket ball. celts could/should have blown out this depleted spurs- last night the knicks blew them out 10+

  • Mileke

What an incredible win for us, and a HUGE statement to the league!!! and to Charles Barkley the one that said “the 2011 champions are somewhere in Florida”, check that boy they’re right here in BeanTown!!!! Loved this win, minus the missed free throws by Ray, gotta imagine he’s not going to miss another one for a long time! Go C’s, thats 3 in a row now!!!! We all have something to smile about!!!!

  • Classless

That was probably the first game I’ve seen where the opposing team was trying to foul multiple times and yet no call was made. I can’t even begin to imagine the atrocious officiating if we get a Celts/Spurs Finals. I’m pretty sure someone will assassinate flopper Ginobli before it’s over.

  • I bleed green in L.A.

  • fick

Holy crap, this game just about killed me. Wow.
I keep saying it but man, I LOVE THIS TEAM!

  • KY Celts fan

I disagree. I think the Spurs are exactly how good as their record shows. We’re just deeper. Personally, I think we just saw a Finals preview tonight. As of right now, the two best teams in the West are in Texas and the Lakers are a distant third.

  • FG

Beating the #1 team in the nba without Kg (or Perk for that matter)…..sick

  • mileke

Yess clearly there were a bunch of intentional fouls that we’rent called, I swear deep down inside I Believe the refs are having meetings about finding ways to intimidate the Celtics, seems as if they’re always picking on us!

  • DRJ

I heard the betting line ended at 3 for this game… the refs kept it at 2… was that their motive for missing all those calls? who knows..

  • jake

    Rondo flirts with a Quadruple-Double.

  • Chris

Feel so lucky to have got to take my dad to this game. What an amazing night. The garden was frigggin electric!!

  • You raise many questions in my head; you wrote an appealing blog, but this post is also thought provoking, and I will have to think about it some more; I will be back soon

  • KY Celts fan

That’s nice. Like to do that for my dad.

  • Robby C

Nate Robinson is the new Tony Allen. He had some very nice shots coupled with a few turnovers that made me scream. I’d like to see less of him and more of Daniels until West comes back. I don’t think this game is as close as it was with Robinson on the bench longer in favor of Daniels or Wafer/Bradley.
