Barkley slams Lebron for race comment

Via Slam Magazine:

“On LeBron talking about race being an issue in the criticism he’s received:

‘It’s like watching a movie. Just when you think it couldn’t get any stupider, it gets more stupid.’

On LeBron continuing to make bad decisions:

‘Sometimes you just say he’s making bad decisions and you’re like okay, he’s gonna get it together. Then he makes more bad decisions. The thing that’s interesting about LeBron, I don’t think Magic, Michael, and myself, we said we wouldn’t have did it. That’s not a criticism. We were asked a question. I don’t want to play with Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, or Michael, I want to beat them. That’s strictly basketball. The only criticism I’ve heard about LeBron and it was my biggest criticism, that decision thing was just stupid. It was stupid. The second thing when they all came out there dancing around on stage, that was silly. That’s the only thing I’ve heard LeBron get criticized about. That has nothing to do with race. That’s what makes this last thing so stupid. That’s stupid. The only criticism of LeBron has been the decision and the one hour of our life that we can’t have back.

And ESPN, oh my God. Oh my God. To go down to training camp and report everyday is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen. I’m watching yesterday and one of the guys actually said LeBron looked fierce in practice. I’m like fierce in practice? What the hell does that mean? He was fierce in the second day of training camp. You’re like come on man, he really didn’t say that did he. This summer with LeBron and all the stuff that went on is like a bad movie. You just can’t make this stuff up.’”

Great stuff, Chuck.

Charles Barkley is the only guy on TV worth listening to about the NBA.

  • jared

Its a shame when Charles Barkley has to be the voice of reason..nonetheless…good call chuck.
I must once again state how sad it is that a true douche/multigazillionaire like Lebron gets to trivialize racism, a serious, institutionalized aspect of american life, for his own ego.
Sadder? that Espn validates such trite shit by taking it seriously.

LOL. Chuck is an idiot of tremendous disproportion. He is also a hypocrite. Just because he’s stupid doesn’t make him an expert on stupid. Remember Charles spent most of his career castigated from saying and doing stupid stuff from being disrespectful to Dr. J when he joined the Sixers to getting kicked off the Olympic team for being a selfish bum to being a drunk and the list goes on.
What Charles fails to understand is that this is the next evolution of basketball as entertainment. It’s not LeBron’s fault. It’s what the market is demanding and what is making money for television, just as his antics and clowning and what many considered disrespect for the game and his body fueled many a storyline.
LeBron was right. Race was an element of how he was treated and covered, but it was not the primary reason for the treatment. Some of the reactions and coverage received by LeBron for changing teams would never have been as vitriolic for a white person, NEVER. Look at the athletes considered the most reviled in America — oddly most of them are black. Anybody that believes race has NOTHING to do with that is in denial or an idiot.
And yes, of course people can be mad, disappointed or critical of LeBron without being racist, but ask yourself when was the last time a non-black person faced such hatred nationally for deciding to switch teams — and it all wasn’t because of a television show.

Al Jefferson Reports to Camp 15 lbs Overweight?

  • GreenBlood

If you’re a douche-bag , you’re gonna be called out for one. And yes it all because of a hour vain pot television show. Blaming it on race is just another failed attempt to get his image back. If he wants to get on the good side of people, get rid of that bum Maverick Carter first. That CNN interview was more on Carter trying to save face that he’s not the one to be completely blamed for that PR disaster, that race played part with it. That’s is just stupid. It’s like saying you couldn’t get a job because you’re black, when in actuality, you’re just a bum and a quitter.
and @Lives, just because Chuck made mistakes in the past doesn’t make what he said wrong. LeBron is not a saint fyi. Stop treating him like one.

“Look at the athletes considered the most reviled in America — oddly most of them are black.”
Look at the athletes considered the most popular in America — most of them are also black. Is race a factor in that?

I don’t agree with most of what you said. Race was not enough of an element to even be considered a factor. I have a feeling not many racists are watching the NBA…
Which white athlete’s have avoided the public wrath like you’re insinuating? In football, Brett Favre is about as despised as there is right now, even more so than Michael Vick (again, as of right now I’m talking about). Roger Clemens in baseball? LeBron plays a predominantly black sport, so of course most ostracized players will be black.
I’m not denying racism is a factor IN AMERICA…but the public backlash is from fans of the NBA and sports fans, not the racist American community.
Jared said it right, it’s sad an athlete of his stature and income (paid for by many white persons amongst other skin colors) is using a real-world issue for his own profit and creditability.
LeBron, you are the definition of a clown.

It had nothing to do with race. The reason that it’s hard to compare in the NBA is because there is no white (or non-black) basketball player who has had the constant “The Next Michael Jordan 6-rings-winning superman” hype and also acted like a complete tool on the court (taking fake pictures of the team with an imaginary camera, ducking shaking hands with the opposing team’s superstar after they owned his team) while letting down his team in the Playoffs.
If LeCon were white? Same shit coming down on him for that stupid “The Decision” and the rest (rock concert crap when being introduced in Miami, etc.) and an intolerance of him continuing to go by “King James” when he’s done nothing beyond pad his own stats.
Imagine if, say, Dirk did that crap in Dallas. Went by Blitzkrieg or some other nickname (or maybe , everybody kept saying, every year, about how he’s more talented and more physically intimidating than Jordan and how he’s the absolute best player in the NBA, put the hopes of the entire state of Texas on his back to win it all. And then quit in the Playoffs and right after that started teasing about what new team he might, just might, end up going to while not signing a contract extension in Dallas. And then going on ESPN for an hour to tell us nothing except he was going to Miami so that he could get a ring for a lot less effort. What would be the reaction? You think it would be no big deal because he’s white?
