Rondo Withdraws from Team USA

 Woj tweets

Team USA has cut Celtics guard Rajon Rondo.

Well… that's a surprise.

More to come.

UPDATE:  Now there's word that he had to leave to tend to family issues.  We'll see

UPDATE 2 (with updated post headline):Here's the quote from Jerry Colangelo.  Rondo withdrew from the team.

“Rajon came to us and said he was going to withdraw from the team, that he had some family matters to attend to and some things to take care of before the NBA season. He did an outstanding job during our training, we appreciate the effort and commitment he made to our program and he completely has our support,” said Colangelo.

We hope everything is ok.  Seems a shame that he had to leave.  Although part of me wonders if he ever really wanted to be there in the first place.

All I can say is good. He needs to focus on THIS SEASON AT HOME. I don’t blame him for wanting to be a part of Team USA, they need everyone’s aim on Boston’s goals this season.

This is great news. Rest up Rajon.

I love this boy, but i think he’s just to proud to let them do that cut.

  • Bas Rutten Jr.

Ugh…he was the main reason why I was watching all these USA games. Oh well.

I’m extremely disappointed, I was looking forward to him playing with Durant and all those other young guys.

  • Lee in Oregon

Sounds like a wink-wink deal to me. I hope he uses the time to work on a jump-shot and improve his free throw shooting.

  • I was right about the Blockbuster Trade Baby!

Exactly, I’ve got some “family” issues too — AKA my jump shot sux. Hopefully this will galvanize his determination to improve that aspect of his game and elevate himself as a player — OR he could just get all down and depressed…
Seriously tho, I’m happy about this, no need to increase the potential for injuries etc…

  • Rondo? Down and depressed? This will just fire him up, if anything.
Get some rest Rajon. Going to need you in a big way this season.

  • Yeah hard to see any downside here. Rajon still got to do a fairly long camp with Durant et all. Rest up, spend time with your family, stay cool, have a great rest of your summer dude, etc.

I think he’d actually be a great fit on a international ball team that wasn’t short on shooters at other positions, but they are. How on Earth they keep making that same mistake mystifies me. It’s not like there aren’t guys out there though.

  • who da guy

i think ppl change with common perception. a couple of months ago, before the finals, rajon was the new superstar, now ppl seem to be down on him. I still firmly believe it was the lack of perk, and officiaitng that cost the celtics the title, not rajon rondo. If it wasnt for rondo, we would not have even made it to the finals, he was very influential to us getting there. So to me, im never expecting rondo to become a knockdown shooter. can he improve, i believe so, and hope so, but i also believe he will improve in every other area of his game. He has consistantly gotten better year by year, and i dont see any reason why this shouldnt be the best year of his career.

  • Adam

Hmmm… That’s convenient after a poor performance and a DNP

  • Bost

Didn’t everyone play poorly (especially the guards) against Lithuania Adam?
Derrick Rose had done nothing in all the Pre-Season games. He played much worse than Rondo. And I guarantee you, if you would of put Rondo in that Spain game, he would of excelled. That game was so easy compared to the Lithuania game, which played a zone, didn’t want to run and was very physical. The Spain game was a cake walk in comparison (as far as spacing, defense, physicality, no zone, etc.).
Something sounds fishy to me. But oh well. At least Rondo won’t have to be there, when this team goes down in flames. I’m sure we have a very good chance losing to Greece tomorrow and placing 3 or 4th in the tournament.
    Good Luck US.

More and more, it sounds like Rondo was forced out. That DNP against Spain really pisses me off now, as does Coach K. It makes that “We know what he can do already” sound like a negative thing. And its not like Rose, Billups, Curry or Westbrook had not had bad games. Rondo plays poorly for one half, and he gets benched? And all of a sudden he’s on the bubble? Bullshit, Coach K, Rondo’s a world class point guard and he’s not on your team anymore. Good luck playing without a pure point that looks to set his teammates up instead of himself.
