Donaghy Claim: Bill Kennedy’s sexuality at root of hatred for Doc

Tim Donaghy, the former NBA ref busted for gambling on NBA games and author of some of the wildest claims I've heard in some time… dropped another bomb last night on the Celtics Late Night Show.

According to Donaghy, Bill Kennedy is gay.  And according to Donaghy, Doc Rivers once questioned Kennedy's sexuality during a game, and since then, Doc has been a target of Kennedy's. Here's the transcript of the question and answer, which came at the 67 minute mark of last night's show:

Question: one of the referees I've been annoyed with over the years is Bill Kennedy, every time he has a Celtics game I almost know that we're not getting calls. Is his relationships with Doc Rivers or the Celtics organization as a whole something you know about.

Donaghy: That's a difficult question for me to answer because I certainly don't want to offend anybody… I'm just gonna come out and say it like it is.  It's no secret on the staff that Bill Kennedy is a homosexual… I don't have any ill will towards gays or lesbians, but it was no secret that he's a homosexual.  It was known around the league, it was obvious during a game Doc Rivers questioned his sexual orientation and I think that has stuck with Kennedy over the years and he has no love for Doc Rivers and the Boston Celtics

It is a wild claim that he made after being asked why it seemed Doc is targeted by Kennedy in games.  It's coming from Tim Donaghy, so I wouldn't just take it with a grain of salt… I'd take it with the whole shaker.

To me, I think Donaghy is pond scum who will say anything to make himself look better or knowledgeable.  Even if the claims about Kennedy are true, the fact that he'd so nonchalantly expose a person's sexuality is unseemly.

However, it's a claim that is now public and it may well have an effect on the results of Celtics games officiated by Bill Kennedy.  Since its out there, I figured we might as well pass it along.

Follow the above link to listen to the entire 2 hour show.  Later on in the show, I hopped on to call Donaghy out on a few things.

  • I have to say that I did not expect that answer when I asked the question about Kennedy. It all comes together well though and could very well be true.

  • Bas Rutten Jr.

Jeez, this sounds like a rather big scoop.

  • NineSevenEight

    That last line…
“it was obvious during a game Doc Rivers questioned his sexual orientation and I think that has stuck with Kennedy over the years and he has no love for Doc Rivers and the Boston Celtics.”
What does he mean by “it was obvious”? Does he know for certain, or is he just assuming? That would have been my follow up. There’s a level of uncertainty to some of his statements that make his claims hard to fully believe.

  • Sounds pretty dramatic, borderline bogus to me.

  • thetitleisours

Well this team will not bend over backwards for anybody! Go Celtics!

  • thetitleisours

Well this team will not bend over backwards for anybody! Go Celtics!

  • Tim Donaghy VS Bill Kennedy. That might be the only matchup that rivals Cavs-Lakers on my personal F ’em both meter.

  • Onions

I think we’re 0-3 in the playoffs and 400 bad calls since the time Kennedy drew a fine after his inappropriate baiting against doc

  • Does it not bother anybody else (and no this is not an invitation for 83 continuous Mikey posts)that the NBA hires such lousy people to officiate their game? I mean liars, abusive gamblers, tax cheats don’t Stern or his minions do any background checks?

  • I listened to the entire show this morning….while it was interesting listening to Donaghy, he repeated the same phrases over and over again, and that made me sick. It made it sound like he was reading from a script, and making stuff up in the middle.
    Things like…
    “moving forward”
    “it was obvious”
“just gonna come out and say this”
    “its no secret that…”
Funny that several of those quotes are in text above. There were others, but I can’t remember them right now. I don’t know if that is a bad thing or not…maybe he was nervous. I can’t take the guy seriously.

  • Starks-shoulda-been-a-Celtic

Honestly, I think it’s a reasonable explanation to why Kennedy has had such a hard on for going after Doc all these years. If Kennedy is in fact gay, and Doc did in fact make a comment once about him being a little light in the pants…
It seems like enough motive for Kennedy to hold a grudge against Doc and the C’s all these years.
Keep in mind, Kennedy has even been fined by the league for inappropriate officiating against the C’s.

  • The NBA is really BIG BUSINESS. Can’t they ‘pay a guy’ to snuff Donaghy out? I honestly feel it would be in the best interest of sports at large

  • Heavy Duty

Bill Kennedy sucks! Whenever he refs the Boston games the Celtics end up taking it in the shorts. I’ve always thought it was rather queer that he made sure thr C’s ended up on the short end of the stick. Screw Bill Kennedy!

  • I spit out my coffee when I heard that on the podcast!

  • Is a podcast considered a form of “media,” because if it is (a blog is considered as such), shit storm pending… outing someone is not protected by the First Amendment and is illegal.

  • MikeintheNENYC

makes sense, kennedy always gives celtics hard time when they take it to the hole.

  • L.T.

    That “shaker” line was awesome…
    Well played, sir…

Donaghy is a scumbag, point blank, nuff said. Everything he says is shit. No class bastard.

    (a) The story makes sense, based on how Kennedy has treated Doc and the Celtics over the years.
    (b) I tend to believe Donaghy when he makes clear and unmistakable claims. He’s been through the ringer with the FBI and other authorities. He’s not about to openly lie in a way which can be easily exposed. This story is very likely true.
    (c) It’s GOOD FOR US TO TALK ABOUT IT. The more this story gets out, the better. For the simple reason that the next time that asswipe (no pun intended) Kennedy referees a Celtics game, he will be less inclined – might not dare – to screw us (no pun intended) as he has in the past.
    (d) Maybe he’ll quit. In which case the overall referee pool will improve.

Couple weeks ago someone asked him who would win, Spurs or Mavs….He said Stern would never let Cuban near an NBA title. In the game that night, middle of the 2nd quarter, Mavs had 12 points and 0 free throws…I tend to trust the guy, as the NBA playoffs have always reeked of ‘rigged’ to me.

Not very responsible “journalism” in my humble opinion.

I just listened to this whole (damn) thing and I have to say, your call in made me smile so hard. When he said that the Celtics built their team “fraudulently” I was so glad you jumped on him for that. Let’s just say you handled it much more maturely than I would have been able to.
    Thank you…

  • AboveTheRim

Wait a minute, everybody knows the Refs are crooked. You can see it with your own eyes watching games. A Ref turns whistleblower exposing his fellow brethren who we all question and suspect are up to fixing games and shaving points and now we don’t believe the whistleblower?
    Why the hell not?

I think what happened tonight in game four of the 2012 Celtics/76ers series proves the validity of this story. To tell the truth, I didn’t even know who Bill Kennedy was when the game started tonight. But after bad call, after bad call, after bad call went against the Celtics, I said to myself I have to find out who this guy is and why he is so biased against he Celtics. After finding this story, things make more sense now. I have been a Celtic’s fan since Bill Russell’s very first professional game. That’s a long time and I have many great memories, but when this current team breaks up (and I hope it doesn’t for at least another two years),I am going to be through with professional sports. The blatant cheating and the beyond reproach arrogance of the officials is something I don’t want to subject myself to anymore. Yet, I said the same thing after The Tuck Rule game (I’m also a life-long Raiders fan) and after the infamous 4th quarter of the 2010 7th game when the officials gave the championship to Kobe and the Lakers. Hopefully, I will follow through this time.

Personally I think Bill Kennedy is the best ref in the league and really don’t care what his sexual orientation is and neither should anyone else. Everytime I see Bill Kennedy refing my teams game I know their gonna get a fair shot to win the game, unlike so many refs who are afraid to make the correct call in a crucial situation. They let the fans, coaches and players intimidate them into making one bad call after another and just take away the other teams effort to win and I’m sick and tired of seeing this type of officiating. This is especially true against the celtics and some of the other so called elite teams and super star players who think their entitled to every call going their way or else their being cheated. So grow up people in Boston or anywhere else who think their privilege too every call going their way because you get know sympathy this way and nor should you want it. Let the refs like Mr Bill Kennedy do their job with honor and respect, my only regret is there are not more refs like him, then the game would be so much better!!! Keep up the good work Mr Kennedy and don’t let them change what your doing because a lot of us applaud you for your fairness and integrity in every game you officiate and that is to get the call right!

I bet this article gets a few extra page views this week.

turns out Donaghy was telling the truth, wonder what else he wasn’t lying about.
