Your Morning Dump… Where Pierce is really pissing me off

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them
here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite
as satisfying as a good morning dump.

“It’s definitely sore, not 100 percent, but hopefully over this weekend it can get better for the rest of the season,” he said.

Pierce’s struggles, however, are apparent to all.

“He may be suffering,” said coach Doc Rivers “Eight turnovers is too much. He’s not healthy yet. We know that, and that’s why he can’t do too much.”

Pierce, nonetheless, intends to participate.

Herald – Pierce Puts His All-Star Foot to Fire

Paul Pierce looked so slow last night, I'm convinced I could have stayed in front of him. No speed off the dribble and those pump fakes fooled nobody. I'll refrain from using the word "old" because the guy is playing with a foot injury. Which leads me to my point… Why the hell is he playing in the All-Star game? Whether he plays 5, 10 or 15 minutes, is there any doubt he needs all the rest he can get?

On Page 2, WEEI's Paul Flannery sums up my concerns about this team.

The Celtics have been outscored 65-23 in the third quarter of the last
two games, which is an overwhelmingly alarming statistic. Especially
considering their latest misadventure came three days after an epic
collapse that induced all kinds of soul-searching quotes and
reactions.

There’s a week to go before the trade deadline and the Celtics have
shown few signs of breaking out of their funk, which has now stretched
to 23 games. They are 10-13 during that span.

Is this the real Celtics team, or is it the one that started the season winning 22 of the first 27 games?

I know Paul Pierce wants another shot at the 3-point shootout, but it’s not worth this.
Reminds me of last year when KG hurt his knee and the team announced he’d been hurting since before the All-Star break, but he played in the All-Star game anyway.
This “different agendas” stuff goes right to the top of the team and supposed leadership.
The Orlando disaster obviously made no impression on the team’s attitude whatsoever. Or maybe they get a little credit for at least being aware enough to say the right things.
I guess a trade is the only thing that could possibly shake them up… hope Ray gets to go somewhere nice.

  • Alex

I’m going to just say this.
If they play like this AFTER the All-Star break, they are definitely not going to win this year.

Pierce is a problem right now
he’s not being a leader in anyway shape or form, its really terrible to have to have to watch.
    KG’s even worse.
As far as the game goes last night, noone played good, and the coaching and rotations were a steaming pile of shit

  • http://www.celticslatenightshow.com Nick Gelso/Celtics Late Night Show

I dont get why KG or Pierce are playing in the all-star game. I dont F’ing get it! Sounds like the “me” first mentality again. The same mentality that has replaced ubuntu in Boston in 2010…

Man, I know you hate on KG, but he wasn’t close to the pathetic spectacle of PP last night. KG is certainly half his former self, but he doesn’t try to do more than he can. Pierce just goes on thinking he’s the man, and plays like he thinks he’s himself 5 years ago. He was a turnover machine last night and just killed possession after possession. I just can’t see any evidence that KG as “worse” than Paul last night.

Lately, C’s are really painful to watch.
This season is gone to me, and Danny Ainge should really start working to put the right pieces together now for the next season.
Bye bye to Ray-Ray (sorry, but it’s over..), let’s get a center who can play basketball other than defending (Bogut?), let’s get a forward who can throw the ball in. I’d like to see Daniels as a starter.

  • CFH

I have a hard time accepting that the season has to be gone when they play so well half or even three quarters of the time.
Even with all of the injuries (full roster for one game so far) they can dominate anyone for a quarter or a half. Unfortunately they’re required to play four quarters or two halves.

‘Quis played well? Hittin 7/9 and dishing pretty well?

  • Venus

You know who is pissing me off? Doc for giving the vets a free pass. He talks about the young guys having agendas blah blah not playing team ball then looks the other way when the vets are doing the same thing. If he kept the vets on as short a leash as he does the others they’d be playing a hell of a lot better.
What use is it having both KG and PP playing hobbled? And having them go iso on offense? While watching Collison torch Eddie over and over with Rondo on the bench but not keeping Quis in the game over PP. He needs to get over this the vets can do no wrong and will lead us to the promised land BS because the team is going nowhere fast.
As for PP shame on him for prioritizing a meaningless 3 point contest where a win is not even guaranteed over team success and his health

  • Caterpillar

I totally understand the feeling, and that’s why I say what I say: one can’t deny the incredible amount of talent this team has, but legs, knees, enthusiasm and eager to win are just not there anymore. That’s the saddest part.
Every team in the league is facing injury problem, even worse than ours. But losing like we are losing has nothing to do with injuries..

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

Yup, Marquis did play well..Noone else

  • CFH

Agreed, the injuries aren’t the problem, at least not directly.
A mental turnaround before the playoffs isn’t something we can count on, but it’s possible. It might be enough, too.

  • Double P Reppin the B

Injuries are of no concern to me. The only issue there really is with this team is there fire. They don’t have it.
I can guaranteee Danny is making phone calls and looking into any possible trades right now, the only problem is how many are really out there? We don’t exactly have tons of commodities, and Rays expiring contract is nice but teams aren’t going to unload all there good young talent for just an expiring contract in return.

  • Bill

I’m pretty sure the only reason they’re playing in the all-star game is because they have too or else they have to miss the first game back.
Think this happened with Kobe couple years back, with his broken pinky and having to play just two minutes or so.
With that said, they play like this second half of season there is no chance. I’m out of excuses for them. Quis played well though.

Marquis is more valuable to this team than most people understand. Doc (in my eyes) does not have control over his team right now. Pierce should NOT have played last night-period. Pierce should not play in the All-Star game, PERIOD. There was an instance last night when Doc called Rondo over to the sideline for something. It was a short sequence, but very telling. Rondo’s body language was not that of a player who respects his coach right now. There was also some very visible chatter between Doc and Baby on the bench. And they were not laughing & joking like usual. I do not think Doc should be fired, (like some people over at Boston.com’s Celts blog do) but he needs to pull this team back in and re-establish himself as their leader.

  • Perry

Couldn’t agree with you more. First, let’s point out that Doc didn’t live up to his word. It was the starters who squandered the 12 point lead. He could pulled Pierce in favor of Quisy — who was the only Celtic that showed up (although Sheed was pretty nifty in the paint). I understand this team possess a savvy veteran presence, but clearly Doc’s tongue lashing produced a big fat zero.
The bench was stellar in the first half minus those ridiculous Eddie House turnovers, and when he wasn’t turning over the ball he was watching Collison torch him from the outside. If Doc was frustrated with Rondo why didn’t he use the back court combination of Quisy and TA?
And by the way, when TA is the only guy shooting better than 50% you know the results have to be poor.
Here are three major questions I have going into the break:
    1. After watching multiple sub par performances, how bad is KG’s knee?
    2. Does Pierce have the fire in his belly to take over games?
    3. Were Ray’s back spasms real or phantom due to an impending trade?

  • Caterpillar

    Let’s hope my friend..
Like we are now, even the Bobcats are gonna go through us 4-1, but let’s keep hope alive! ;)

  • NineSevenEight

Maybe they should all scrap the All Star break and take a trip back to Italy to find themselves again.

  • http://profile.typepad.com/the_bantam the_bantam

Phew.. Agreed on the rest of the squad and the despicable rotations, but ‘Quis got me freakin inspired sitting on my couch.. be nice for his teammates to take notes.

  • http://profile.typepad.com/the_bantam the_bantam

That’s about the best idea I’ve heard.

  • Lakerhater (FD)

The team has the talent. Our health isn’t that bad. Our GM is doing what he can with the chips he’s got.
Our rotations suck, we make NO adjustments at halftime while oru opponents do, we allow our opponents to build momentum by completely erasing our lead before we call timeout to adjust. Our players are indifferent to our coach because he leaves them in for hard minutes nigth in and night out and then bitches about their output. Gee, I wonder what the f*cking problem is….what could it be…?
At his point Thibs should be the interim head coach. When you carry this much payroll you have certain expectations. Doc doesn’t (in my opinion never has) measure up.
