Tommy

By Tim (FD)

There’s nothing better than attending a big game at the Garden. The intensity of the crowd, the Jumbotron’s dramatic opening, being able to hear the obscenities coming from KG’s mouth.

Still, whenever I’m there I always feel like something is missing. Last Sunday, when I was at the Celtics-Lakers game, I realized what that something was. A Celtics game is just not the same without the unmistakable voice of Tommy Heinsohn.

For me, and indeed for every Celtic fan under the age of 30 , we’ve known nothing but Tommy’s raspy moans accompanying each Celtics game.
Love him or hate him, he’s an undeniable part of being a Celtic’s fan. I’ve probably heard Tommy’s voice just as much as I’ve heard my own father’s voice over the years.

If you’re looking for objectivity, insight, consistency, and overall quality announcing, Tommy’s not your guy. His blatantly biased and often offensive commentary makes him more like a drunken uncle with a microphone than an NBA analyst. But that’s why I love him.

Tommy has – quite literally – been a life-long Celtic. Playing from 1956-1965, broadcasting from 1966-1969, coaching from 1970-1978, and broadcasting again from 1981-present. As Tommy’s age is beginning to limit his ability to make road trips, I’m starting to realize how different it’s going to be when he is no longer announcing games. The games will never be the same, and he will be missed.

So in order to honor him, I decided to put together a list of the "Top Ten Tommy Heinsohn Quotes." I obviously don’t remember everything he has ever said, so the list is neither perfect nor complete. I

If you have a couple classic Tommy quotes, as I’m sure you guys do, please add them in the comments section.

10. "Oh this kid’s gonna be good." (Often bestowed prematurely on any Celtics rookie. In this case, I remember Tommy talking about Orien Greene.  Who?)

9. "Bing, Bang, Boom, Barros!"

8. "At least it wasn’t his chopstick finger." (Said after Yao Ming injured his finger.)

7. "Terrible call! Ohhh I gotta see this one again! Okay… He was moving."

6. "This kid Danny Fortson reminds me of a kid named Kevin McHale."

5. "He was in da circle!"

4. "He’s a young referee… and I HOPE HE DOESN’T GET MUCH OLDER.”

3. "Brad Miller is a SLIMEBALL!"

2. "I LOVE WALTER!”

1. Any part of this tirade from a Celtics/Suns game in 2007. It included such memorable lines as -

  • "They're gonna call it a hard foul. They're gonna call it a hard foul!"
  • "This is getting ridiculous!"
  • "He walked!"
  • "Kenny Mauer better go home to his wife…because nobody here loves him."

There used to be a website devoted to Tommy quotes. It was great. They broke it down by season and add new ones after each game. It was during those years when, really, it was one of the only thing worth blogging about surrounding the Celtics (late nineties).
I love Tommy and I’m getting more and more annoyed with Donny Marshall. I’m really hoping that they’re aren’t trying out Donny to replace Tommy (when he, inevitably, retires). Donny talks too much, talks to Celtics fans like they don’t know basketball and is just all around obnoxious. He makes it even harder to watch those away games…

Agreed…I have nightmares sometimes, where I wake up all sweaty, believing that Donny Marshall has taken over full time for Tommy. This guy sucks, seriously. IMO, they have to bring in another Celtic, preferably someone from when Red was still active with the team.

  • NineSevenEight

Number 7 has always been a personal favorite of mine.

Tommy should announce for as long as he likes, but when he decides to step down I believe the logical replacement would be Kevin McHale. I think he and Gorman would go great together.

  • Lakerhater (FD)

Holy Sh#t! Did he relly say that about Danny Fortson? LMAO
He was a hell of a lot of fun to watch coach when I was a kid. Never forget him getting chucked for kicking a water bucket on the court.

About Darius Miles when he had his huge afro and long goatee during a game against Portland (in which Pierce drained a game-winning buzzer-beater, by the way: “The Pharaoh! Three seconds! It looks like The Pharaoh parked his chariot in the lane!”
About Zaza Pachulia when he was still on the Magic: “Look at the size of his head! He looks like he should be on Mount Rushmore!”

  • wr celts fan

a valiant effort, but no1 can truely compile a list of the funny things this guy has said or done. when u watch ur home team, u dont want some dork telling u whats happening (ie joe buck) u want some completely biased dude saying everything that your thinking in ur own head. and thats my tommy point.

Gorman: ‘Glen Davis has decided to change his nickname. He’s mentioned Uno-Uno. You got any good ideas Tommy?’
    (pause)
Tommy, with despise in his voice: ‘Big…. Baby’

hahahahahhah, i don’t think i ever laughed so hard listening to tommy go off on brad miller. I also whole heartedly agree with the donny marshall hating on here..i just upset any time he opens his mouth. The bs just flows out of there

  • CFH

It makes me happy every time he says “I’m with you, [fill in the blank]” whenever the player or coach in question is snarling at the referees.
“He’s been in the lane since Columbus discovered America!”
“That referee just wants to go to dinner!”
Mike: Zach Randolph has worked out for this team this year.
Tommy: And they like him as a person, which is unique.

  • Athanacropolis

On Josh Childress: “He has the ugliest free throw since Dr. Naismith invented the game!”

  • PaulPierceWannaBeGangsta

    8. “At least it wasn’t his chopstick finger.” (Said after Yao Ming injured his finger.)”
    Classy.
