Did TA really strip D-Wade with the game on the line?

The Celtics led the Heat 97-94 with :40 seconds left in the 4th quarter when Tony Allen fought through a pick and stripped Dwyane Wade as he made his move to the hoop. TA picked up the loose ball, got fouled and made both free throws. The Heat never recovered and the Celtics won 107-102.

Say what??? Yup, it happened.Tony struggled with foul trouble most of the night (4 points, 6 rebounds), but made the play of the game.

Maestro Rajon Rondo had another great night: 22 points, 14 assists and 6 rebounds. Ray Allen had 23 points and 7 rebounds. Eddie House chipped in 16 points off the bench.

The 4th quarter was full of runs. The Cs stretched the lead to 88-78 midway through the 4th thanks to a 9-1 run. Ray Allen followed a three pointer with two nifty assists (to Perk and Sheed) and then Rondo made a gorgeous bounce pass to Perk on the break for a dunk.

The Heat rattled off 8 quick points to shoot down any hopes of an easy win. The Celtics responded with 7 quick points – Eddie nailed a three, a layup and KG nailed a jumper.

I've been a bit cynical of late, but this was a GOOD win, especially w/o Paul Pierce.

Other observations:

  • 26 of the Celtics 27 first quarter points came in the paint.
  • Glen Davis finished with 6 points, 5 rebounds in 15 hustle-filled minutes.
  • The Celtics had 15 offensive rebounds. Fifteen.

  • Did anyone else hear boos from the crowd after Sheed missed a three pointer in the 4th quarter?

Wyc Grousebeck
is always fun to listen to when he joins Mike and Tommy. He said he's
willing to "dig deeper" if Danny Ainge has the opportunity to add a
player with an unattractive long-term contract at the trade deadline.
He also predicted that LeBron James will sign with the Heat.

Doc is speaking right now, claiming he needs to lower Ray’s minutes. ONCE AGAIN. He says Bill Walker is going to play more and blah blah, but damn Ray must be getting tired! You neeed to get Walker in the game for even like 6 – 8 minutes, whats so bad about Tony and Walker and the 2 and 3? I think you could get away with that for maybe 8 minutes a night until marquis gets back
Overall good game though, Rondo is so damn good and fun to watch. When hes attacking this team is so hard to stop. KG looked a little healthier tonight but I’m not gonna get my hopes up because you never know.
Perk played well, Ray played well, Eddie too.
Rasheed is still frustrating to me for some reason and I can’t put my finger on why
Tony is playing out of his mind, his defense wow I’m beginning to think his bad days are behind him. Am I crazy? Did I just jinx it?

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

so I wonder how danny and anyone else who didnt like rondos comments feels about em now…he came out like a leader and played like it on the floor from start to finish. great job rondo!
KG had a solid role player game, aspects of his game are coming around, but he hasnt to dominate in any facet right now, and his defense and rebounding in the paint have to get better

  • nick

where the TA haters now? his defense has won us 3 games this year now

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

…And the team also followed rondos lead which was great to see, and they actually let him be the playmaker down the stretch, which was good other then 1 on 5 gimpy pierce iso

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

Uh TA is playing great, and the haters had every right before, he wasnt a competent basketball player, but considering its a contract year…yeah hes playing good right now and really helping the team…props…but alot of other things won us this game

  • http://profile.typepad.com/mferg24 MFerg24

I heard the little Boo’s for sheed. His defense (not including post up-D), is absolutly horrible. He can’t even bend his knees. Him just bombing up 3′s isn’t good either. I’m getting sick of this dude… and i’ve been defending him the whole year.

  • KY Celts fan

Dammit, you jinxed it! I knew someone would eventually. I’m predicting 3 pts. and 7 TOs for T. Allen next game, then he’ll twist his ankle. Thanks a lot, Reppin! :)

  • KY Celts fan

Personally, I didn’t see anything wrong with Rondo’s comments. He didn’t say anything we haven’t been saying here.

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

I agree, there were other fans and even danny questioning it though…which made no sense everyone should be thrilled that rondo did what he did and then backed it up on the court

  • nick

what other things won the game? other than good ball movement and when we had a one possesion lead and ta strips dwade a top 5 player in this league who can knock down big shots and we’ve been blowing 4th quater leads id says thats a pretty big play…and ummm not a competent basketball player? obviously you just became a celts fan after they won the championship cause whoevers watched the celts for years certainly knows how good TA can play when healthy, so watch ya mouth you snitch

  • Double P Reppin the B

He doesn’t even attempt to block shots this year, he settles for swiping at the ball and getting called for a foul everytime. I’m beginning to think he can’t even get his body off the ground anymore. His defensive effort is simply not there, everyone knows the guy can play defense at an extremely high level if he wants to, I hope hes saving it all for the playoffs

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

You are such a loser its sad…. Tony has not been a competent basketball player for years, in the midst of an 18 game losing streak on a miserable team, he played good for a month, yeah i remember…who cares he still made dumb mistakes, and im here to say hes playing great for us and also to point out the obvious that you’re an imbecile if you think nothing else won us this game, and we didnt blow another 4th quarter specifically because of 1 steal

  • Al

KG had a crap game 14 pts 9 assists, 6 boards – just a role player now….needs to improve rebounding, only a help defender, no good 1 on 1…Oh crap TTR beat me to it….

  • DRJ

We can’t celebrate the fact that Rondo led the team through the 4th quarter. Not yet. For the past 2 games, Doc’s had no choice. Paul’s been out.
We don’t know if Doc has learned a lesson, or whether he will go right back to the Paul-on-the-point + Paul isos at the ends of games when Paul returns.
I think Doc is weak-minded. I think he’s unable to do things that might insult or upset any of the vets. That’s why Sheed runs out of control… lazy as can be, chucking 3s, avoiding the post, fouling instead of guarding, etc. Doc’s not strong enough to rein him in.
I hope that when Paul gets back, Paul himself will help Doc finally get it…. he needs to have a talk with Doc and explain to him the stupidity of taking the ball out of Rondo’s hands when the game’s on the line. Paul should know, and Doc MUST LEARN – that Paul is not as good as he was in 2007-08, and Rondo has improved enormously since then. Today the go-to-Paul plan is an anachronism, a deadly one.
Let’s hope Doc gets that soon.

  • DRJ

KG played a great game. His energy and movements and leadership are key to this team, and getting better with each game. The only player on this team who is FURTHER away from being a “role player” is Rondo.

  • nick

“you’re an imbecile if you think nothing else won us this game, and we didnt blow another 4th quarter specifically because of 1 steal” uhhhhhh didnt we have a 10 point lead and see it shrin to 2pts in under 2 mins, yeah thats right we did thats what id call blowing a 4th quarter lead….please stop speaking your obviously just a hater and havent played a game of basketball in your life to truely understand how skilled TA is, and what will you be saying when we resign tony this offseason? obviously doc sees something you dont

  • KY Celts fan

Lebron to Miami? hmmm… I could see it happening, but only if the Cavs have another embarrassing playoff run. Lebron is a loyal guy, and I think he would stay if they do well. But if they lose like they did last year, I wouldn’t be surprised if he decided to play with Wade, creating this decade’s legendary duo and possibly a Heat dynasty.
Personally, I see Wade going to Chicago as more likely, especially if they dump Hinrich and Salmons. A Wade/Rose backcourt could be the greatest of all time.

  • nick

If Wyc is willing to dig Deeper I’m absolutely POSITIVE!!! that the Warriors would throw us Maggette for Scal, House, and Giddens. Cmon what an Insane second unit we would have…Maggette,Sheed,Marquis,T.A,Baby are u fucking kiddin me?? If he pullede that rade off u can just mail us are rings now, the lakers or anybody else couldn’t fuck with that bench

  • DRJ

Wyc also said he would dig deeper to improve the team if they didn’t have to “give up anything”. I suppose that means nothing major. Therefore, I don’t think they would trade Eddie. Just Scal, Giddens, Walker, Shelden… that kind of thing. Nobody else, if he meant what he said.

  • DRJ

Lebron may go to Miami because Wade is there and those two have discussed how cool it would be for the both of them to be on the same team. Yes, it would be cool. And really, really hard to beat.

  • JRose

  • Danno

Only on Reds Army can someone like TTR completely douche up a great win for the C’s by acting like a know it all blowhard TO OTHER CELTICS FANS and acting like an asshole and insulting everyone who disagrees with him.

  • KY Celts fan

The 80′s had Magic-Kareem, 90′s Jordan-Pippen, Millenium Shaq-Kobe. Wade-Lebron could be the next huge dynamic duo. This decade will have one, it could be them.

  • KY Celts fan

It’s who he is, we all have to come and accept it. He’s a glass-half-empty kinda guy. Just don’t insult Rondo! God help you if you insult Rondo!

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p0115704263ce970b Papa Irish

if you have to give up eddie to improve the team you do it in a heartbeat, i love the guy, but he is a one trick pony, and Doc wont play him come playoff time so why keep him
im hoping that Wyc’s comments point to us getting teyshaun prince or kirk hinrich
also, we nee to fix our rebounding problem, i would be open to moving big baby if we could get something for him, and we could get a good rebounder for cheap (buyout, small trade)
maybe a bill walker for Joey Dorsey trade? he might be a beast on the boards that we are looking for
and dont be surprised if you start hearing Raja Bell to the C’s rumors soon, we can get him for cheap and he should be able to come back from his wrist injury before the trade deadline
i would like a young post that is determined to grab every board, big baby’s not getting it done, we may need to go another route

  • Al

Exactly….just getting sick of the role player crap from TTR – soon he’ll have us playing like the 01 76ers with Rondo playing sheriff and shooting 35 a game and all the C’s being role players and getting all Rondo’s rebounds just like Iverson’s 76ers did…

  • Al

Mate if TTR won the lottery he’d be pissed about all the god damn tax he’d have to pay….

  • DRJ

O’Neal fouled the heck out of TA too. I mean, he was practically walking around the court with him… talk about a Moving Pick! And still, TA fought around it and did what he did. Very cool. This guy TA has quietly, humbly, worked his way back into the good graces of just about everybody… just by doing his job.
I loved his post-game comments too… he even mentioned that he thought Wade scored many of his points on him because he hadn’t properly listened to “my bigs” on defense. I mean… this guy is talking right there about the core of the team, how it runs its D. TA went from the player we most wanted to never see again to the team’s #1 best defender, and an extremely valuable part of their chances for going all the way. Great story.

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f2d28d7970c BigMck

Not a Maggette fan. Not at all.

  • rav

I don’t come here often, but I have to say that I’ve come to realize that ToTheRuins is quite a douche.

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

Wow…You people in such complete and utter denial at where KG is at this point in his career….its fucking sad
Yeah KG played fine for where he is at his career….a role player…. and 6 rebounds from last decades best still isnt getting it done, people think if he makes a pass to an open man or knocks down some open jumpers hes back and in the flow, i just clearly stated aspeects of his game are coming around, but im sick and utterly tired of his performances being overrated…I didnt say he had a crap game, but a solid role player effort…how could you actually refute that? KGs shot and passing arent important to me, his rebounding and protecting the rim are, sorry he still looks slow, old, injured and not so good in those aspects of his game, the most important aspects of his game…..let me know when we arent the worst rebounding team in the league…peace

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

you realize you just agreed with DRJ who said the only person who isnt a role player is rondo?
dude, get a clue stop living in denial
KG is a role player, i never said he isnt important, but he still has a ways to go. simple…deal with it

  • Sr. Swish

Listen, TTR says some things that most people aren’t willing to hear in these comments (or just dismiss it because he’s so hard on KG), but he always tries to keep it real. The truth is TA’s been a liability for pretty much every game for the last 2 years until very recently. He was always overzealous and a little bit gullible on D, as intense as he played it. I’m hoping that the minutes he’s getting now is giving him the experience and confidence he needs to play solid D from start to finish

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

Okay nick, yes bud, nothing else won us this game except the great tony allen, had rondo and KG not combined for 23 assists, we had still been in position to win the game, as a matter of fact all we needed in this entire game was 1 steal …
TA homers are the worst, im admitting hes helping our team greatly right now, but they come around and act like people were wrong to hate on the guy before and hes the greatet player ever. cmon nick dont be stupid

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

but how dumb do you have to be to actully think it was tony allen who singlehandedly won us this game? hey im more then willing to admit the kid is arguably our best defender and playing the best ive seen him play in years…but thats just a TA homer comment.
also im not gonna sit here and overrate KGs play until i see the guy dominate in any facet

  • Sr. Swish

Although I will say I am sick of the “You are such a loser its sad” comments… not saying I’m defending those… just wanna make that clear

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

TA…or KG homer? or just nick or danno posting under a differnt name?
sorry i hurt your feelings, we’re here for the same reasons. i love you

  • DRJ

    sorry… missed the intention there… :)

  • DRJ

I think I just worded it badly

  • DRJ

There are a lot of arguments in here, but this is not one of them. I think everyone agrees that TA used to suck, and that he’s now playing great ball and has made himself very valuable to this team. It’s a great story actually. Rare.

  • DRJ

Good points. Mine was limited to interpreting Wyc’s words… which sounded like he doesn’t want to lose any major piece. But who knows… when the deals come up, I’m sure they’ll consider them all.

  • DRJ

I’m gonna throw in my 2 cents in appreciation of TTR. Imagine how much less funny / more boring these threads would be without him :)

  • http://profile.typepad.com/srswish Sr. Swish

Hahaha so true we’d all just hate on lakers trolls, and as fun as that is, it’s only so fun for so long

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

Yes, but there are those die hard TA homers that have stuck by this guy through thick and thin, and incompetent basketball and decision making…they like to come around when he plays well for a stretch and act like Doc was wrong, fans were wrong, everyong was wrong and TA couldve been playing like that all along, its someone elses fault he wasnt, hes just amazing…Where are the TA haters now? as if the fans didnt have a reason to hate him before? they will never let go of the month stretch he averaged 20 a game on a team in the midst of an 18 game losing streak…. but it was his own fault blowing out his knee after a blown whistle going for a dunk, because tony is probably the dumbest playing in the association

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

I also think something that has to be taken into consideration is …Tony is in a contract year, and if he dosnt contribute and do what he can do, hes out of the league.
Nick apparently thinks the celtics will re-sign him (lol)
When they have been completly fed up with him and gave up on him but noone else in the league wanted him so they were stuck, luckily for tony there has been injuries and he has played very well

  • Danno

Well, I guess that means you’re calling the owners of this site dumb then, since they wrote the article about tony’s play that ultimately iced it for us.
If you hate the celtics so much. why do you watch them?

  • Danno

More like glass half full of shit.

  • IanD

Dude you need to chill and stop insulting your fellow FANS.
I was ready to jump off a bridge after last week and the thought of loosing PP, but right now I can’t wait to watch this team pull them selves together and right this ship in the second half and in to the playoffs.
Think of it this way, how much more exciting could it be to witness this team make a gutsy veteran fueled run at a championship while we watch Rondo mature in to the perennial all-star and future leader we all know he can become.
What ever happens I think this season will be one to remember. We are all Witnesses

  • aaron

    DUDE
    9 ASSISTS.
yes he is a role player but KG’s sheer presence frees up others.
honestly i have been UNDERWHELMED by PERKINS of all people…
everyone loves to talk about how great he is…he has been in the league years now and is still putting up (in my opinion) modest numbers. he never has dominate games and i personally know that the issues in the locker room dealt with HIM

  • aaron

    dude.
did you finish sucking off maggette yet?
that guy is a cancer on EVERY team he joins.
also btw, you’re late for your classes @ Bunker Hill CC

  • http://profile.typepad.com/srswish Sr. Swish

I agree with the KG comment, but I would like to know how you “personally know” that the issues were with perk instead of just saying you do

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

9 assists was good last night…but ray allen grabbed more rebounds then him
and we’re not arguing about anything, u agree he’s a role player at this point in his career, certainly at this point in this season…thats not me saying hes always been a role player…that would be absurd.
And I agree Perk has been in a little bit of slump for him, but uh the numbers hes averaging are similar to KG’s…is anyone gonna sit here and say hes more then a role player?
And I understand KGS “sheer prescense” helps, but do doesnt every player on the teams, and we only ever talk about KG, what about other plays prescense? they all friggin matter

  • http://profile.typepad.com/srswish Sr. Swish

Sorry TTR, I dont see one guy in this thread who said “see, I told you TA was the effin man! He can do everything!” We’re all pretty much on the same boat. The guy stunk, and yes, he’s in a contract year, but he’s doing great right now in a time that we desperately need him. Does that make us TA homers? Not in a million years.
And as a side note, players say he’s one of the best locker room guys around. We might actually keep him around for the sake of Ubuntu

  • http://profile.typepad.com/mferg24 MFerg24

Not to mention he doesn’t jump for rebounds, so he never gets them and just fouls people after they get the ball. Can we get rid of this guy after this year.. pleasE?

  • KGhaTTR

and he’s a jackass – will always remember u said that – along with last month’s KG is my favourite player….
I agreed with DrJ saying KG is the more further from being a role model than anyone other than Rondo – read it again ballbag

  • KGhaTTR

I’ve even changed my name in his honor – Al was too boring….

  • KGhaTTR

U see what I did there??

  • KY Celts fan

I would be, too. Damn bureaucrat jackels.

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

Yep, KG is generally a jackass, this doesnt mean i dont want him to do well for us and i root for him and hope he gets back to 100% to help us win a title. him being a jackass has nothing to do with anything.
And ok, KG at this point in this career, and certainly this point of this season = role player…sorry that you cant get a grip on reality, and obviously dont know anything about the player KG once was

  • KGhaTTR

No come back on DrJ’s comment? Didn’t think so…
Nope you’re the only one around here gripping anything.
I know all about KG like you’ll never know. I could just about list his stats.
I’d be interested to see what your definition of a role player is…..
KG I agree, and so does he, needs to rebound better.
Other than that. He plays good 1 on 1 D (has been slower at this lately bc of injuries)…Is the best defensive communicator virtually in the league…is an excellent help defender…hits the open jumper….keeps the offence flowing with his great passing….get’s a steal and a block a game…has a myriad of post up moves he should use more…shoots ft’s at 80%….I could go on. A role player is a one trick pony like Eddie House.
I’d be interested in what u think KG’s one trick is that makes him such a role player…

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

Haaaa!! funny man, But I dont hate KG, lets clear that up, im just not a fanboy of the guy and belive in all the myths that come along with him, he’s a shell of the player he was in 2007 when he was already in a decline from his prime, he would probably even come out and say he is just a role player on this team now at this point in his career…I dont consider a role player, like you, a one trick pony..thats just a specialist….KG puts up modest stats and cant dominate any facet of the game right now does a little bit of everything decently, hes doing nothing great right now, and im not gonna sit here and overrate him at this point in his career, he was a top 5 of the last decade, but hes nowhere close now….some people gotta come to grips with it
and my response to DRjs comments would be, no Pierce is less of a role player still then KG, so i wouldnt agree other then rondo KG is the closest thing to being a non role player

  • Jon with no H

as a community college graduate, I resent those comments.
in the future, could you please limit nick’s educational achievements to high school or lower?
    much appreciated

  • Jon with no H

a little props to Perk for making the nice switch to get in Wade’s way and allow TA to catch back up with him

  • KGHaTTR

It’s than not then, than KG….other THAN Rondo….I’ll help u with that if u like….
