Can we pin this loss on Thibodeau?

Joe Johnson scored 12 of his 36 points in the 4th quarter as the Hawks beat the Celtics 102-96, their third straight victory over Boston this season.

The Celtics were leading for most of the game, but the momentum took a giant turn midway through the 3rd quarter with the Cs up 67-57. Glen Davis was called for a highly questionable flagrant foul on Marvin Williams. Doc Rivers lost his cool and was ejected after getting two technical fouls in the span of 2 seconds. Armand Hill was also slapped with a technical foul. After the dust settled, the Celtics lead was just 3 heading into the 4th.

The Celtics offense went stagnant in the 4th quarter and we think we know why…

Tom Thibodeau took over for Doc with 7 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and did not make a single substitution. Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Kendrick Perkins and Glen Davis played the rest of the game. In fact, Rondo (45 minutes), Ray (43 minutes), Paul (42 minutes) and Perk (42 minutes) played the entire second half.

How is that possible? Did he forget to sub?

Brian Scalabrine started for Rasheed Wallace (sore foot, day-to-day, might be out a week) and played extremely well. He had 9 points (3-3 3FG), 5 rebounds and did a tremendous job guarding Josh Smith.

Rondo lead the Celtics with 26 points, 7 assists.

The Hawks shot 33 free throws to the Celtics 18. The Hawks had just 7 TOs, while Boston coughed up the ball 16 times (Perk had 6 TOs).

johnson was spectacular – don’t want to take away from that. it’s not often that i’ll complain about the sway bad calls have on the final outcome, but i feel kind of jobbed on that one.

1st u diss my cory maggette trade idea, then u guys put up a stupid title like they have our number. WTF? we were only missing our 2 best shotting big men and our 2 best defensive big men, as well as 2 out of our 3 top rebounders, C’mon the Hawks know what will happen if they see us in march or april. Don’t be stupid and put up dumb headlines like that! AND O BY THE WAY, do u see how valueable jamal crawford is to the hawks? he’s lethal even when he wasnt on top of his game like 2night he’s still dangerous, thats what cory maggette could be to us instead of throwing out scrubs like scal and TA. who fuckin cares about our cap situation going foward. we want to win titles and thats it bottom line

Dude – injuries are part of the game. Stop making excuses.
Anyway, I just changed the headline, because we realized Thibodeau didn’t make a single substitution in the 2nd half.

Not willing to go THAT far w/o KG/Sheed/Daniels, especially after the show put on by the referees(Donaghy lives). Zaza rakes KP’s face and snaps his neck back v. BBD going FOR the ball?!
BTW, when did BBD become the closer for the Celtics? How many times did they feel like they should have gone into Perk, watched him get trapped away from the basket and/or take a shitty shot/turn it over?
The ONLY good thing I’ll take out of this game is being thankful that Sheed was out….because he DEFINITELY would have racked up 2 T’s.

Celts need to add a wing defender more than a back up pg or another big. The johnsons, lebrons and lewises are the ones they cnt seem to stop. They miss james posey. Cn they trade 4 him but with noh paying the 4th year or even more? Who are the other availabe wing stoppers out there? Celts will meet at least 3 of those ‘unstoppable’ wings if they want nba finals again.

Thibs – yeah, real bad coaching. Scal played out of this mind… so of course he rides the pine in the 2nd half. Nuts.
Doc – what the hell did he say/do to get thrown out? No excuses… just like he says to Perk about his techs.
Refs – pin it on them. Definitely.
Perk – went for a lot of walks tonight. Hope he got some fresh air out there.
Good news – the team played a near-perfect Q1. Some of the best basketball we’ve seen from them. Without KG or Sheed or Daniels. In fact, the whole first half was great. Then the refs took over and the end was the end. But I think the Cs proved how great they are… NOT because of any superstars shooting near-100% (like two of the Hawks did in Q4), but because of their awesome D and great sets.
When fully healthy (I THINK that’s still possible….) there will be no stopping these guys. For real.

On a general note, I WISH more coaches would start publically RIP these officials. And by RIP, I mean decapitate. Everyone continues to hold their tongues because they don’t want their wallets to get hit. TELL IT LIKE IT IS and maybe some of these a-holes will be held accountable. What occurred over a 45 second span was CROOKED. They GIFTED the Hawks with the opportunity to score 7 STRAIGHT points!! They were down 10 and cut it to 4! Doc gets ejected in a millisecond, which wouldn’t happen to the coach of ANY other team. Example, JAY TRIANO LAST NIGHT!!! CHARGED TWO INCHES FROM THE REF! Did he get tossed??? NOPE!
ATL left the court laughing in the C’s face, THAT’S HOW CROOKED IT WAS. 30k is a drop in the bucket, say what’s real.

Why would we want Maggette? what is with your love of players with little to no concept of team basketball, no defense, low basketball IQ, chuckers?
how are we going to get maggette? trade rondo or ray? lol

  • StayGREEN

3 words after seeing that game… DONAGHY WAS RIGHT

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

Not suprised with the outcome of the game, i was never feeling secure with the lead even at 10 in the 3rd quarter right before docs implosion…and u could pretty easily blame doc for getting tossed, costing us points and momentum, not Tom freaking thibodeau..
Rondo started the game at his pace and everything was fine, i thought the 2nd half and 4th quarter became more of a 1 on 1 stale ball movement with way too many turnovers, and the hawks just got on fire..
Injuries are a part of the game, and if this team doesnt get healthy nothing really matters, other then the improvment we continue to see in our young players… the new big 3 era window is closing fast from where i sit and watch and if they dont get healthy this year, when do they expect to win?

  • coach bombay

the reffing was criminal… this isn’t the first time I’ve watched Salvatore steal a game from the C’s. Sucks that there are never consequences for the officials.

I had noticed it (btw it does no good to scream at the TV, Thibs can’t hear you). Can you imagine Woodsons reaction; “So you want to run your guys for the entire second half down your 1st and 2nd Power Forward, on the second night of a back to back against my young rested Hawks?” There were a lot of comments on Twitter about the C’s standing around, not executing, but they needed a break. Then the shots wouldn’t fall, all front rimming, what a surprise. Maybe these teams that keep interviewing Thibs in the offseason for a head coaching position know what they’re doing.

  • Danno

If only for the fact that I would lose my season tickets by getting ejected, I was ready and willing to throw everything and anything I could get my hands on at Bennett Salvatore’s head last night. That guy is a straight up fucking crook. There is no other way to look at it. He’s been accused of it before. He’s in deep with the South Philly Mob goons. He needs to go.
And I think this game pretty much answers all those offseason question about why Thibodeau didn’t get a head coaching job elsewhere. He’s brilliant with defensive schemes, but cannot coach his way out of a wet paper bag.

I agree Thibodeau = no subs, I know 7th grade asst. coaches who can make subs

  • Dianne

Not only the no subs – which made no sense given that it was the 2nd game of a back-to-back. But he didn’t call any time outs when the Hawks were making runs – no breaking of their momentum, no regrouping – nothing. He finally called a time out near the end of the game. It was bad coaching. Pierce with no points in a fourth quarter of a close game?? Of course – he was completely out of gas and at that point Tibs couldn’t take him out – he should have been calling a couple time outs in the 3rd quarter and making subs then! Scal, Eddie and maybe TA should have seen at least a few minutes. Absolutely terrible coaching.
