Rashard Lewis Has No Respect for His Coach

Via the Orlando Sentinel:

Controversy brewed during the Orlando Magic's 120-111 loss to the Utah
Jazz on Thursday night when power forward Rashard Lewis said he
declined to go back in the game during the second quarter.

Coach Stan Van Gundy was upset and said he had never had a player overrule him.

“(Lewis) didn't want to go back in. I wanted to put him back in with
six minutes to go in the second quarter and he didn't want to go back
in," Van Gundy said after the Magic (17-5) had their six-game winning
streak broken. "He said it was because he had two fouls, and so if you
have a guy who doesn't want to play, I'm not going to get in an
argument and put him back in if he doesn't want to play at that time.

I can understand a player saying to his coach – "Are you sure? So-and-so is playing really well." But to outright refuse to enter a game is baffling to me.

Lewis' comment shows he really doesn't get it.

"(Van Gundy) wasn't pissed at the time," said Lewis of declining to
report in at Van Gundy's request. "But he was pissed when they started
making a run. You got to point the finger at something if that's what
you got to point it at. Hey, I don't give a damn."

You're right Rashard, you don't give a damn and it shows.

Is it me or does it seem like the Orlando players don’t like their coach Ron Jeremy…. I mean Stan Van Gundy. This isn’t the first time this year the team has had some sort of problem with the Stan.

Too bad, because he’s a good coach. They’re kids. And he’s a short, fat, white boy with a squeaky voice. They’ll grow up, someday (when it doesn’t matter anymore).

  • The Truth is Here

Whether they like their coach or not it is ridiculous what Rashard Lewis did. It is unacceptable. Sure Van Gundy would be annoying to play with, but come on, he can win games for you. Suck it up and do what you are payed for.

Both. Rashard is wrong, but that team has tuned out SVG for a long time. I’ve made the point a couple of times in the past. During timeouts, his players are looking all over the place and not at him; it’s a joke how obviously they tune him out. Screaming is a pick-your-spot strategy, not an all-the-time strategy. He’s a broken record in the media “We get no respect” and apparently in the locker room, too.

I talked to Karl Malone, he said Rashard was just mad Van Gundy took away his steroid fix before the game.

Stan is a great coach but if u look at it from a Players perspective, hes a giant pain in the ass…not exactly a players coach, man i could easily get sick of listening to that guy.
Weird situation, kinda reminds me of Scottie Pippen throwing a hissy fit back in the day during MJS baseball break and Phil Jackson drew up the last play for Toni Kukoc, and Pippen refused to go back in the game, toni kukoc goes on to hit the game winner and pippen is sitting there basically disorientated.
I dont think its a huge deal, I think Lewis is a good player and shouldve gone back in, but not that uncommon, Stan Van Gundy just wont be afraid to critize his players to the media

  • KY Celts fan

I’m sure glad we have a group of unselfish players who go above and beyond listening to their coach and teammates. I can’t see any of our guys saying “I don’t give a damn” in an interview. Hopefully this type of attitude catches up with the Magic and they start to fall apart.

  • DRJ

One thing about SVG that is a problem is his propensity for airing his dirty laundry in the media. Now that’s stupid.

  • Uncle Leo

Anyone else hear Doc yelling at rondo during the final possesion in, I think, the 3rd against the wizards?
    “wait..wait…wait…wait…wait…wait…k go”

  • Al

Firstly, if you’re ridiculously overpaid like Lewis is – the mostly overpaid player in the league – he should do what he’s F&(*&*( told.
If I was a Magic fan he’d be getting in the ear from me. Imagine making what he is making and then saying ‘I don’t give a damn…’
Probably sulking cos Carter’s taking his shots….great team player….

Rashard Lewis IS unselfish….he didnt wanna go back in the game because Ryan Andersen was playing well and he thought he deserved more minutes…all of a sudden this makes him selfish?

I dont see how Lewis is any more overpaid then our very own big 3 at this point in there careers, mainly ray allen who is ridicoulousy overpaid this season for what he brings to the table

  • Al

Isn’t he making 100 mill? Don’t think Ray’s on that and they’re similar in what they bring.
Lewis is the most overpaid schmuk in the league by far

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

Hes not getting paid 100 mill this season alone
Our very own Paul Pierce and Ray allen both make more then Rashard this season.
and KG was the highest paid player in the league up until this season
