Myth or Fact: The Celts Are Shooting Too Many 3s

Sheed

What's the one criticism you've heard most during the team's recent skid?

"They're shooting too many three pointers… "

With Eddie House, Rasheed Wallace and Ray Allen clanging nearly every long range shot they take, it may seem like the Celtics are taking too many 3s…

But I did some
research on the team's 3-point shooting over the past three seasons after
fourteen games.

2007 (12-2) : 103-261 (39%) – Averaged 7.1 makes/19.1 attempts for the season

2008 (12-2) :  72-223  (32%) – Averaged 6.6 makes/16.5 attempts for the season

2009 (10-4) :  93-263 (35%) -  Averaging 6.6 makes/18.8 attempts for the season

The '09 Celtics have taken two more 3-point shots than the world champion 2007-08 squad. And if
this year's team maintains the pace, they'll take 0.3
attempts less per game than the championship season.

Can the Celtics win shooting this many 3s? The answer, as history shows, is yes.

Consider this three-point shooting myth (like the Celtics deceptive rebounding stats)… debunked.

You left out that this year´s team´s 3s come from their big man, and that they´re struggling to get offensive rebounds because of this.
You also did not mention that these 3s are focused on a few guys who seem to struggle with their shot.
Rasheed doing nothing but chuck up 3s isn´t exactly surprising for opposing defenses, either.
Not to mention the timing with which they hoist up their shots, which often seems to be exactly the wrong action at the wrong moment.
Considering this, I´d still say they shoot way too many 3s.

The problem isn’t taking too many 3’s.
    It’s MISSING too many 3’s.

Agree with Danno. No probs taking them, it’s making them.
in 2007, they took 261 shots to get 309 points
in 2009, they’ve taken 263 shots to get 279 points

I think Rasheed’s taking too many 3’s and needs to get in the post more, but not the rest of the team. Ray’s stroke will come around and Pierce is really shooting well from 3 this year (it seems to me that last year his form was off and he had a hitch in his 3-point shot and his free throws, which appears to be gone this year). However, Eddie House worries me because he’s a one-dimensional player, and when teams cover him without helping off on other players, he can’t get his own shot off. Someone needs to tell him to stop trying those ugly 15 foot bank shots too because they never go in. Besides opening driving lanes occasionally, he’s been pretty useless this year.

Guys stop worrying about Sheed. No one was complaining early on in the season when he was hitting every 3. The guy is in a cold streak and it just happens to be the same cold streak that eddie and ray are in as well. Shooters go through things like this, we will be fine

Completely agree. It’s happening in November, two months from now this will all be forgotten.

    Figures are wrong. Should be…
    2007 (12-2) : 103-261 (39%) – Averaged 7.3 makes/18.6 attempts for the season
    2008 (12-2) : 72-223 (32%) – Averaged 5.1 makes/15.9 attempts for the season
    2009 (10-4) : 93-263 (35%) – Averaging 6.6 makes/18.8 attempts for the season
“The ’09 Celtics have taken two more 3-point shots than the world champion 2007-08 squad. And if this year’s team maintains the pace, they’ll take 0.3 attempts less per game than the championship season.”
This doesn’t make sense. You can’t have taken more threes over the same number of games and be on pace to shoot fewer threes over the season
“Can the Celtics win shooting this many 3s? The answer, as history shows, is yes.”
This is true, provided we make as many threes.
Also, would the figures change if we adjust for pace? If we are playing slower than in ’07-’08, that means the three is a bigger part of the game than it was during the championship season; hence, if we miss a lot, it is more harmful
