After squandering a 12-point second half lead, the Celtics lead 82-80 with 6 minutes left in the game. Lead by Chris Paul and Peja Stojakovic, the Hornets had all the momentum. Following a Celtics timeout the Cs went on a 15-6 run. Here's the breakdown:

  • Kevin Garnett makes 9-foot two point shot
  • Kevin Garnett makes 6-foot two point shot
  • Ray Allen makes jumper (Rajon Rondo assists)
  • Paul Pierce makes 7-foot two point shot
  • Rajon Rondo makes two point shot (Kevin Garnett assists)
  • Paul Pierce makes 24-foot three point jumper (Kevin Garnett assists)
  • Kendrick Perkins makes 7-foot jumper (Kevin Garnett assists)

Prior to that timeout, the Celtics were getting scorched on defense and playing sloppy on offense. I'm not sure what Doc said, or what the players said to one another, but they clearly flipped a switch, played clean team basketball and finished off the Hornets.

Chris Paul does not like Rajon Rondo and vice versa. They were slapped with double technical fouls in the 2nd quarter for getting too touchy under the basket. And then Paul had some words for Rajon Rondo has some words for Paul after the game. High-angle video showed Rondo instigated the post-game dust-up.

Here's the head-to-head matchup:

Paul: 22 pts, 9-13 FG, 8 assists, 3 reb, 2 TO
Rondo: 6 pts, 3-7 FG, 10 assists, 3 reb, 4 TO

Paul gets the nod tonight, thanks to a big 3rd quarter. It wasn't Rondo's best effort, but it's tough to complain when the guy gets double digit assists.

Other observations:

Pierce dropped 20 of his 27 points in the 1st half. Here's his stat line if you combined the 2nd half from the Bulls game with the 1st half from tonight – 40 points, 15-17 FG, 7-8 3 FG

Hornets guard Bobby Brown (3-12 FG) took way too many shots for a role player.

Another solid performance by Sheed (12 points, 5 rebounds). He had 8 big points (including 2 threes) late in the 3rd/early 4th when the Celtics were fighting off the Hornets big run.

I’m not sure if you guys recorded the game & could check it out but, I saw Rondo and Paul talking right before the game ended when the C’s inbounded with like 4 or 5 seconds left. I bet rondo reacted to something that was said then, because I don’t get why rondo would just go up to him like that.

    Ugly win.
TOs. Defensive lapses… they didn’t start actually guarding Peja till a few minutes before the end of the game, even though he was white hot from deep.
Perk took 5 steps prior to the layup underneath with 2:35 left in the 1st. Count em… 5 steps. No call.
One bright spot: Eddie House. That beautiful pick-and-roll pass to Shelden for the dunk, and the pretty pass to Quis for a layup. So Eddie can play the point. Who knew? Love Eddie… way underappreciated, I think.
Oh well, can’t have a great game every time. They did pick it up in the last couple of minutes… nice to get the win anyway.

Oh yeah, I saw that. I didn’t know if they were just having a friendly thing going on or what, but then saw how it escalated a moment later…..I love this game. 🙂

  • Excellent piece Chuck-the way you broke down that run. KG shot the ball terribly in the 1st half, but I keep forgetting he probably isn’t even near his “best” right now. I was at the game and sitting pretty close to the action. Stojakovic has such a sweet touch man. To see that guy and Ray in one night was just a joy. The whole Rondo/CP3 thing was great-that was what everybody wanted. Even though they each only had 1 block, Perk and KG played very well defensively tonight. And Dr J is right-that House to Shelden play was sweet.

  • i love how the hornets werent able to take advantage of our pick and roll coverage where rondo and kg were switching on west and paul
i also love the faith rondo has in kg to throw the alley oop pass
Pierce may not score as many points as the kobe’s and brons and wades of the world, but he is definitely a more efficient and more clutch scorer

  • paul

Pierce looks excellent this year, i gotta say

  • Has anyone else noticed that they created the creatures in the new movie avatar in the likeness of sheldon williams? john, chuck please do a side by side comparison pick

  • ssshady35 aka ANGRY TURK

Rondo just got paid!!! 5 years 55 MIL

  • G4L

I think someone said that in one of the live chats.. but I think they said Quis looks like the Avatar.. I cant argue with both

  • Ace-One

Yeah, Perk and KG did a pretty good job of keeping David West under wraps, which was one of the keys listed in the preview post. The defense on Peja? Not so much.

Yeah, it seemed Marquis was late getting over on Peja but in the 4th quarter Pierce was all up in his face…
