Ray Allen’s Replacement in 2010?

JJ

I know training camp just started and we're all pumped about grabbing the title back from the Lakers, but indulge me for a moment and jump ahead to 2010. If the Celtics are unable to pull off a blockbuster move and get D-Wade (am I the only one who finds this realistic?), Joe Johnson will be available.

Via the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

Hawks captain and All-Star Joe Johnson said he will not sign a contract extension with the Hawks and will play out the final year of his contract this season.

Johnson will be an unrestricted free agent next summer.

The Hawks extended a four-year,
$60-plus million contract offer to Johnson this summer. But Johnson
said he decided not to sign the extension after mulling it over during
the offseason.

Obviously, a lot will happen between now and then, but JJ is a name to consider. He'll be 29 next year and in the prime of his career. But I'm not sure I'd sign him to a deal worth more than what he's passing up now.

Get DWade!!!! but JJ might be pretty good option too

If we get wade, the whole team would have to be blown up so that A) we could get him and B) there would be enough ball to go around. I like the idea of jj more, maybe as a Ray Allen option. But it’d be really nice if Danny could manage to get one top ten draft pick at some point in the next few years.

    Ray Allen replacement*

I disagree with having to blow up the whole team. A starting backcourt of Rondo and Wade for the next 7 years would be absolutely amazing.

Does no one else think that it sucks that we’re talking about signing a player that WE drafted?

Not really. If we could sign Al Jefferson again after KG retires, I’d do it in a second

I love these people that say the Celtics have to blow up the team to sign a star player the next few years. Do these people not look at the salaries on the team? This next list of guys (and their salries) are all coming off the books at the end of this year.
    Ray Allen (18.7mil)
    Brian Scalabrine (3.4 mil)
    Eddie House (2.8 mil)
    Tony Allen (2.5 mil)
    Rajon Rondo (2 mil)
    Marquise Daniels (1.9 mil)
    J.R. Giddens (1 mil)
    Sheldon Williams (800grand)
    TOTAL: 33.1 million dollars.
That leaves the team with plenty of money to sign a top dollar free Agent(Wade – 22mil, Joe Johnson – 18mil, Bosh 18 mil, etc. . .) and still have enough money to give rondo an 8-10 million dollar contract. with about 3-4 million left to fill out the bench if they stay in the same price range for the over all salary.
Plus maybe the team can get their top dollar guy to take a little less to play with a contender, like KG and Ray did, get rondo at only 8 mil, and then you’ve got even more money to spend where you might have a chance to resign Ray Allen as well at somewhere between 5-7 mil. It works people, if you just do a little math.
And as for the Joe Johnson signing. I think that is the top of the list thing for the C’s if they can’t get Wade, i heard rumors of that at the Boston Globe site early in the offseason.

Look, it was the Pitino era, the team made mistakes. We all know that we could’ve been looking at a team looking something like this over the past few years:
    C- Al Jefferson
    F- Shawn Marion
    F- Paul Pierce
    G- Joe Johnson
    G- Chauncey Billups
(Although the team couldn’t pay for them all for too long.)
