Celtics Lowball Glen Davis

Via the Boston Herald:

A league source also confirmed that the Celtics finally started
discussing numbers with Davis over the last week, and made an offer
that was considered disappointing by the Davis camp.

Davis started free agency with the hope of earning mid-level ($5.8
million) money, but has yet to draw any offers beyond the one recently
made by the Celtics.

Let's have some fun and speculate about the "disappointing" offer. I'll say it fell along the lines of $2 million – $3 million per year. Anything less would be insulting, considering the Celtics are handing Shelden Williams $1.3 million for 4 points and 4 rebounds per game.

The Herald also printed some of BBD's tweets:

“Why is this (expletive deleted) taking so long!!! I really don’t understand!!!!

Anybody knows what’s going on with the Celtics? Cause I don’t!!!!!

Well I’m not worried about Sheldon!!! Great. Guy and great player!!! But we are different players you know!!!!!

I wonder how the weather (is in) Boston cause I haven’t been there in so long!!!!

I like some of you guys ideas!!!! I going to tell danny (ainge)
about some of you guys ideas!!!! I don’t know why then they sign
(Williams) before me!!

Well I don’t know where I’m going to be!!! Where (you) guys think I’m going to be!!! Who needs a pf?”

The Celtics are dangerously close to pissing off Davis. Then again, since he's a restricted free agent, that doesn't really matter.

As much as I love Big Baby, I think he’s making him sound like a big baby on Twitter.
What is up with all those exclamation marks? Is he the type that screams every time he says something?
I really hope Big Baby comes back but I honestly do not see him as someone who should get $5 million or more because he’s going to be a bench player next semester.
Whatever. I just hope Ainge has something reasonable planned for Big Baby.

  • I don’t even think it’s him.

  • Wow, I figured BBD would get $4-5M easily. I guess not. I mean, despite his weight, which has never been an issue, I thought he was a great contributer. Scal get $3.4M and seldom plays…Glen deserves at least $5M.

  • Alex

Glen doesn’t deserve $5 million until he loses some weight. I think he would be a LOT better if he was just a bit lighter.

  • Sounds like Big Baby is on the verge of tears again. lol.

  • .

    bb needs a nipple

  • I have my doubts too. I don’t think that account has ever been confirmed.

  • make a list of players making 5 mil
Um. yes he does deserve it but its not the right time to be a FA

  • Big Baby isn’t worth more than $3 million. Just because someone overpaid Scalabrine, doesn’t mean you should compare contracts. Josh Powell, Hakim Warrick, and Drew Gooden are all better than Big Baby, and they are being paid 880k, $3 million, and $4.5 million respectively (And Drew Gooden is waaaay better than Davis). But, it’s not my fault if the Celtics overpay for Big Baby Davis.

  • Bas Rutten Jr.

This further proves student athletes get a completely free ride.
On a side note, I think he deserves a minimum of 4 mill a year. If he keeps knocking down that 15 footer, he’s gonna be a serious player.

  • hahaha josh powell? get the fuck out of here with that shit, big baby is way better thsn josh powell
big baby averaged 15 and 5 in this years playoffs, your boy josh powell fell somewhat short of those stats only averaging 2 points and one rebound; josh powell is nowhere close to big baby, he isnt right now, wasnt five years ago, and wont be ever
and drew gooden and hakim warrick arent better players either, there is a reason san antonio replaced gooden, with a guy thats about 20 years older than him
and memphis cut ties with warrick who they could have had for extremely cheap, to add zach randolf,
big baby defends his position better, and has a better offensive repertoire than all three of those guys, and its not even close

  • Clearly that twitter shit aint big baby. I heard some dudes on the news reference it as well while discussing the topic like its a credible source or something.

We all love Baby, but so far all we have seen if a surprise second half of the year last year. That IS a great start but he really needs to prove that he is for real before he gets 5+ a year. I understand what DA is doing
I hope Baby takes this as a clue that he needs to really prove himself to everyone and when he does that the big contract will surely follow. Will teams adjust to him? Create height matchups that affect his game? Can Baby continue to improve on all areas? What is his ceiling? I think 3 +/- 1 Mil works.
I trust DA on this one
SW only got 1.3 Mil so not a good measuring stick for being PO’d lol

  • Pre world economy crash of 2008 Baby would have gotten ~4 million for 2-4 years based on the late season push and playoff run. The economic landscape is just very different now. His and Leon’s agents are complete idiots and they should fire them, because they obviously made a lot of promises without being in touch with the market at all, which is their job. How could you miss that crash and its effect on the league????

And even if all that weren’t true, this would still have been a tough market, because teams were already all aiming to spend in summer 2010. So this is easily the toughest FA market in who knows how long…

I think the main point of comparison with Shelden Williams, Baby, and Powe, is that Shel was willing to sign a one year deal.
Powe is in the middle of a microfracture comeback, won’t play half the season maybe, and his agent wouldn’t take a one year minimum deal…total BS. Baby could probably get 3-4 mil from the Celtics if he were willing to sign a one year deal.
This is not a good summer for big paydays and long contracts. All I can think of is the Odom deal and that looks stupid now and will look dumber every year of the contract.
