No chance for Powe’s return

RedsArmyAdmin July 31, 2009 Uncategorized 20 Comments

David Aldridge reports (Via CelticsBlog)

The Cavaliers are [Leon] Powe's first choice for a new team, according to a source, with the Orlando Magic second. Dallas and the L.A.Lakers
have also made inquiries about Powe

. . . There is no chance that the Celtics would re-sign Powe, or match any offer, said another source. The team has made it clear that it is moving on

Oh man, the Lakers?  That would kill me.

i doubt Powe is going to the lakers. now that they got odom back, i dont think theyre gna do ne more significant moves. plus they have too many big men to want to go after powe (bynum, gasol, odom, powell, mbenga) im more worried about powe ending up in cle or orl.

  • Danno

    dead weight. don’t need him.

  • thetitleisours

His next team will appreciate his amazing ability to get to the free throw line. He caused foul problems for the opponent. We will regret letting him go

  • thetitleisours

Gomes, Big Al, and Powe will always be Celtics to me

My girl (who has an I Love Leon shirt) will be devastated. I know how sports go and am pretty macho so I’ll simply resort to crying like a little girl.

I really dont see what the big deal is about losing Leon Powe. I Mean i love the guy but I dont think after 3 knee surgeries hes really going to be able to contribute all that much

  • Danno

Exactly. There’s about a 70% chance Leon will be either completely ineffective, or never play another meaningful minute of NBA Basketball again.
I look at him the same way I look at Pedro Martinez.
It sucks to lose a guy with that much talent and effort, but after his injuries he was never the same, and I’m glad we got his best years, and got him a ring.

  • CFH

So if Leon goes to the Lakers, will Phil Jackson deign to pronounce his name correctly?
He’s looking for $5-6 million and a second year at HIS option after blowing out his knee three times by age 25?
I wanted to see the Celtics keep him… but I wouldn’t want them to keep him at that cost even though he’s a great guy who needs the money to save the world. Signing him for one year for cheap even though he won’t play for at least half the season? Good. Signing him for TWO years for mid-level money knowing he might not ever play? Bad.

  • thetitleisours

Well you had an earlier post on most hated players in sports.
Do the Lakers have the most hated FANS in the NBA?
    http://armchairgm.wikia.com/The_Most_Annoying_Fans_in_Sports_Today
Eagles fans might win that one for the NFL

  • WhatThe?

Can somebody please tell me where it was reported that Leon may never play again? The only thing I have heard is that his rehab was ahead of schedule and that he will be ready to play after the All Star break. I’m sorry, but I must have missed the news that he will never play again.

No.. they’re doubling in price. They’re a collectors item now.
Ok.. maybe I’ll drop the price. I need to discount the championship gear too.

  • Danno

Based on the specific injury, the fact that it’s his THIRD knee surgery, etc. etc.
It doesn’t matter what’s been “reported”. The “Reports” about KG all last season were all bullshit too.

  • Jp

Leon is one of those guys you’ll root for mo matter where he plays. The kind of guy I’d like to have over for dinner and have my kids meet. But we really can’t keep him for so much money. Gotta be hard for both sides here. He’s in a bind with his knee, and the Celts don’t have the money to throw around on a gamble. In the back of my head, I’m holding out hope he will some how stay, but, in the end, I just hope he gets to play again.

He gets to the line, but isnt a good FT shooter, and we appreciated him more then any team or front office in the league, thats the only reason hes in the league. as stated above hes dead weight now, dont need him

  • bigmck

I don’t think its good business for any team to sign Leon now. Who knows how the knee will respond?
And this talk of a two year deal with the second year being a player option is a bit bold.

  • tiki

I’m like the rest… I love Leon but how good is he going to be after the knee surgery? He’s had a lot for being a young player. Plus he won’t be able to play until playoffs? Doesn’t seem like he’d be to much of a help to any team being out that long. I do wish him the best where ever he does go.

  • brain dead

not signing leon is bad karma for this championship run. we should had treated him better at least.

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p01156f6a54c2970c ToTheRuins

    this logic is flawed.
we were the ones who gave leon his chance after 2 bad knee injuries, we are the ones who gave him minutes on a championship team, we are the ones who molded him into the player he is today…we have treated him better then any team or front office in the nba, he is a goddamn free agent coming off a 3rd acl injury, we are trying to win now, and a weak bench is our biggest thing to fix
