Done Deal: Marquis Daniels to Boston

RedsArmyAdmin July 17, 2009 Uncategorized 28 Comments

Marquis daniels Marc Spears… now a Yahoo employee… has the story.

Free-agent guard Marquis Daniels has committed to sign with the Boston Celtics, a league source said Friday.

Daniels will receive the Celtics’ $1.9 million biannual salary-cap exception if the Indiana Pacers
aren’t interested in a sign-and-trade deal. The 6-foot-6 Daniels
averaged 13.6 points and 4.6 rebounds in 54 games with Indiana last
season, his third with the team. Daniels previously played three
seasons with the Mavericks.

Daniels, 28, will help improve the Celtics’ perimeter depth. Boston signed free-agent forward Rasheed Wallace last week and remains interested in keeping forward Glen Davis.

In my opinion… this is better than any of the other options we've been talking about.  This is a great signing.  He can back up the 2 and 3… and even the point in a pinch.

The details of a potential sign-and-trade apparently still need to be worked out… so stay tuned for the final details.

I still hope it’s a sign and trade, wouldn’t that free up some money to resign BBD? (if we got rid of Scal’s contract)

Point in a pinch–I’ll be curious to see if that’s true or if he gets consistent minutes at the 1.

this guy will thrive in your system, went to school with him tough guy.

Aside from the luxury tax implications… there’s no reason to free up money for BBD. They have early Bird rights so they can give him a max deal if they wanted

  • thetitleisours

We can finally rest easier wondering when something would be done. The other stuff will be a walk in the park. Still hope we find takers for TA and Scal so we can fit in guy like Hudson and and leave room for Powe

Is it safe to assume the Tony Allen experiment is over?

  • Double P Reppin the B

No complaints here. The dude lit us up last year when we lost to him and tommy was praisin him

  • Alex the Greek

Great signing. I’ve always liked his game and thought he was a solid role-player. This will definitely shore up the bench. Having reserves like Wallace, House, Daniels, and hopefully Davis isn’t too shabby at all.

wow, i absolutely love this signing, I actually remember this guy playig very good agaist us this year includig his defese on pierce was really good….love it

If they play house and daniels together, does it really matter who plays the point? Kind of like playing ainge and sichting together.

This is awesome, better than just about anything I could have reasonably asked for. He’s like Tony Allen with a brain.

Great news, feeling good about our depth.

  • Danno

    This is fantastic news.

  • bigmck

A solid move by Danny, especially if it’s at the $1.9 million number. He’s still got some cash to get a back up point guard and resign BBD.
    Give us the trophy now!!!

  • Jon

Agree with everyone. This came out of the blue and is definitely better than the other options out there. I never thought Daniels would go so cheap.

yes im loving that we dont have to give up anything for him, i wonder if this frees up danny to try to trade tony and either jr or bill
and my bet is on gabe pruitt to be the back up point next year, id be perfectly fine with that
marquis is actually a fairly decent point guard in short spurts too

  • http://recognizethegame.com Rosef

respect… I was thinkin the same thing. Tommy loves this dude thats all I need to know to jump on the marquis bandwagon. Lets get this championship season underway.

he is ten times better for us than grant hill too

  • domz

it’s good that you did not get jamario moon. ahhahahahaha

  • Shawn-cvd

This off season has been WAY better than last years. Two diverse acquisitions. Sheed can play the four or five, and now Daniels can back Truth, Jesus or Rondo? That’s a great Play off roster.

Much better than the voiced Jamario Moon IMO. That’s a really great signing.

  • Bas Rutten Jr.

I’ve always loved this guys game. Very smooth. I hear he smokes a little bit of the ganja. Awesome!

  • paul rowe

The Celtics will be the thugs of the NBA again, and i love it

This is too good to be true. If Indiana had picked up his option this year he would have made $7.5 million. Instead he is going to come here and make just under $2 million. That means he really wants to be here and play for a championship team.
To be honest, off the court I think he’s a little crazy. But he always seems focused and intelligent on the court.
“Daniels is noted for having several tattoos inscribed on different parts of his body. The tattoos range from a detailed map of Florida that covers his entire back, a caricature of a man blowing his head with a shotgun on his lower right arm, and Chinese characters on his other arm which were apparently intended to represent his initials, but translate to English as “healthy woman roof”

  • thetitleisours

If they unload Scal and TA maybe they can also get one of the lower priced option like Joey Graham in case of injuries (or keep TA at this point)

  • CELTICSMAN18KG

    CHAMPIONSHIP-BABBY

  • Eric

Celtics need to go after rodney carney now after aquiring marquis daniels. Rodney carney was a good player in minnesota he’s capable of hitting threes and he is about 6-7. He can explode with 20 point games and he dunks hard. we could probroly sign him to the veterans minimum. he averaged 7.4 points per game, everyone check out a few of his highlight reels on his player page at nba.com. our bench would be great (Eddie, Marquis, Rodney, possibly Davis, and Rasheed). We need him because he’s young and talented (YOUNG)

  • jesus christ

wait………………………………… getting sheed and daniels is better than getting kg and ray ray ? just wondering i love the move however
