Happy birthday, “Beat LA” chant

Jess Camerato reminds us that 24 years ago tonight, the now famous "Beat LA" chant was born.

On May 23, 1982 the Philadelphia 76ers were on the verge of eliminating
the Celtics in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Rather than
cheer against the victors, the Garden crowd bellowed “Beat L.A.” as
encouragement for the Sixers to defeat the Lakers in the championship

Let that be a little history lesson to the new Celtics fans in the house.  This is how much we hate LA.  I don't care who you are.  If you're playing the Lakers, then we want you to beat 'em.

And THAT'S why we did the whole Issel's Army thing.  For those of you Nuggets fans that want to express "Beat LA" in shirt form… you can still order one of ours now, and get it before the series is over.

Since the birth of the ‘beat LA’ chant, the Lakers have won 7 championships. That’s by far more than any other pro sports team over that time period. Perhaps the chant needs revision. Here are some suggestions for a new one:
    “Contain LA!”
“Force a game 7 with LA!”
“Try to prevent a second dynasty this decade in LA!”

Incidentally, the Sixers failed to ‘beat LA’ that year.

  • Thanks…troll.

  • Great stuff as always guys. Thx.

  • Every dog has its day. Its Lebron’s year.

  • The chant is just fine. After last year’s ass-kickin, it should be softened a bit:
“Have mercy on the soft, spineless Lakers”

  • If the chant was born on May 23, 1982, wouldn’t that make the chant 27, not 24? Or did I read that incorrectly?

    Again, FUCK all yall and…..
“Love me or hate me, it’s one or the other. Always has been. Hate my game, my swagger. Hate my fadeaway, my hunger. Hate that I’m a veteran. A champion. Hate that. Hate it with all your heart. And hate that I’m loved for the exact same reasons.” – Kobe Bryant

  • And again… we hate him because of the rape.
His swagger, fadeaway and hunger are fine. His forcing a woman to have sex against her will… that’s a little different.
