Doc: The Refs are Targeting Perk

Perk

Doc Rivers on the treatment the refs give to Kendrick Perkins:

“I’ve got to say this about Perk,” Rivers began, “clearly, every game
he’s been targeted for these moving screens. He gets them every game.
He gets them called every game. Watching that tape last night, there
two where he did move in the direction but there was zero contact on
him. Brad Miller, on the other hand, is flying around. He’s laying guys
out on screens and didn’t get one of those called. That bothers you.”

Doc's right – 100%. But this is all Perk's fault. He has a bad habit of setting moving picks and he's not well-liked by officials.

I think as a team, as a whole, not just me but as a whole, I don’t
think think we’re the favorites with the refs. I don’t think the refs
like the Boston Celtics,” Perkins said.

Asked why that might be Perkins, replied, “I don’t know. We have a lot of talkers on this team.”

The secret to getting calls? Kiss their asses:

“Perk doesn’t help himself, which I’ve told him 100
times. When you do commit a foul, sometimes say, ‘Good call.’ And I
know he’s never committed a foul and I probably whine as much as he
does.”

It’s ridiculous that we have to put up with referee temperaments and biases. We expect, demand… clean, transparent, balanced officiating. Period.
(Got a rant about the whole ref situation. Hope it gets posted.)

  • Lakerhater

Why the hell can’t the NBA bring in NCAA refs for the playoffs? Yeah you would still get some bad calls, but you would eliminate the bias (ala queen james) that CLEARLY EXISTS. Stern looks more nad more like Vince McMahon.

I give Perk alot of credit-a few months back, he would’ve been picking up techs left and right. Remember at the beginning of the season when he was on pace to get a suspension pretty quick..? He has really kept his cool. I know we all have probably heard enough of this whole referee drama, but did you know 2 of the 3 refs yesterday were born and raised in the Windy City: http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/58804/20090427/bulls_had_hometown_referees_for_game_4/#

The Celtics certainly had every opportunity to win every game in this series despite the referees, which is an area in need of serious and sweeping competence checks in general. But I still won’t blame the refs for the Game 4 loss or the whole Chicago family ties thing. If that were the case, has Doc been secretly sabotaging the Celtics (joke, Doc haters)? And if that’s true, someone hop over to Springfield and get Del Negro’s dad on the phone with Vinny and tell him to give us some hometown (kinda) love. Regardless, this was a winnable game like the rest.
But I completely agree that Perk is targeted. It’s because every other team and respective fan base has been bitching about how “physical” the Celtics D, with Perk as an anchor, has been since last year. Now every elite team tries to model its defense after the Celtics while the Celtics are under the microscope. We should have seen this coming from the start of the season. Once you complain about something in the NBA, everything gets examined more closely, to cater to the bitchers and moaners. Example: P. Jackson crying because Leon “POW” outworked his players under the rim and got to the freethrow line more than Lord Kobe. What happened the next game?
Obviously you can’t tell anyone, except Bulls fans, that Noah or Miller aren’t guilty of a million moving screens a game. BTW, Noah is dumber than Perk who came out of high school. I mean, the guy is complete headcase who can and will unravel at any moment. There’s been many instances just watching him in this series. The guy tackled Pierce on final shot in Game 1 and then cried to the refs saying it wasn’t a foul. Luckily for him, Pierce bailed him out by missing a freethrow. Cleary his basketball IQ isn’t anything to write home about, at least from what I’ve seen. He might have just an edge over TA, only because he stays on the court. He acts out of impulse more than any player on the court. From that alone, you can’t tell me he’s not moving on screens as I think we all see it with our own eyes. I’ve seen Miller hold and grab and move just as much. Every move the guy makes is in slow motion for God’s sake! Why they don’t call them? I’ll never understand.
At least with Perk, Celtics fans and even Doc can admit that he actually does make boneheaded plays, like moving, at times. We’ve seen Doc snap at Perk for setting illegal screens. The sad thing is watching Perk get called for almost nothing while his counterparts are in a free for all. Even worse is hearing other fan bases and bloggers justify the blatant calls against any Boston team because the they have won a multiple championships in the last few years as if incompetence is a retribution for winning “too much.” Ridic.
Celtics just need to play through it.

Perk for sure is not a favorite of the Refs, why would he be always seems to be giving them a death stare(and the rest of the league), but I agree he’s not that good at setting screens. He should take after BBD. He’s pretty good at setting picks.

BBD does not set great screens. Gets called for a bunch as well. In my opinion.

Not why we lost but very true
the celtics have an extremly hard time playing through bad officiating, which unlucky for them has been a constant throughout the season

  • ssshady35

LETS GO CELTICS, I’M TIRED OF PEOPLE THINKING THAT THESE BULLS COULD HANG WITH OUR TEAM. IGNORE THE REFS LOOK FOR RAY EARLY AND LET PAUL DO HIS THING. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT HE WHEN HINRIC TRIES TO GUARD HIM HIS EYES DON’T BLOW OUT OF HIS HEAD. HE NEEDS TO PUT HIS HEAD DOWN AND TAKE HIM TO THE HOLE EVERY TIME. ****YOU HEAR ME PAUL TAKE HIS SORRY ASS TO THE HOLE ****
COMMON LET BLOW THEM OUT LIKE WE DID IN GAME THREE.

  • ssshady35

OH AND BY THE WAY FUCK BEN GORDAN, I HOPE HIS HAM STRING POPS OFF HIS LEG. THEN HE CAN GRAB HIS BALLS AGAIN. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH LETS FINISH THIS SERIOUS AND MOVE ON. THE BULL ACCTUALLY THINK THEY BELONG ON THE SAME COURT AS THE CHAMPS.

  • Baron

    To be fair, they do.
Its the celtics damn fault that they dont just take care of buisness, no they sulk to the refs, play nonchalant basketball and lose respect after blowing a team out, even though the series isnt over when it should be.
Its ridicoulous, this series SHOULD be over, but for whatever reason this team constantly let up from game to game. its thee fault they kept the bulls in the last game, they couldve just blew them out, nope they didnt focus enough, or play hard enough.
3/4 games have come down to the last shot, id say the blowout was the only actual fluke game…as dissapointing as it is, the bulls are about as good as the depleted celtics right now, I think thats shined through pretty clear so far
Paul pierce needs to pull his head out of his ass, thats my one and only problem

I have to agree with Captain Caps there on one thing: when I see Pierce posting up Hinrich, I get excited to see the elder Jayhawk take the younger back to school. That’s just a tremendous mismatch to me.
But Paul looks gassed. Seems like when he creates his shot on him, it comes up short, and he doesn’t drive to the basket because it’s been the all rejection zone

Guys, I don’t know what series you guys have been watching, but Heinrich is doing a remarkable job on Pierce. Heinrich isn’t much of an offensive player, but he is a tremendous defender. There is a reason why the Bulls are putting him on Pierce: He is the best one-on-one defender on that team.

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p0115704b7be5970b bigpartymaker

I’m watching the same series, which why it’s frustrating. He’s a good defender (2nd team last year or something) but I’m looking at a size and ability curve that #34 usually would punish him with.

  • baron

Yes, Kirk Is a very very good defender..give him credit…
Pierce should still have his way with him, and its not just hinrich, its also salmons doing a great job on him as well, with a groin injury and all, theyre pretty much throwing a different defender at pierce every possesion, and more often then not hes making the wrong decision, as a matter of fact hes made the wrong decisions in every game but game 3
