Rondo

What can you say? The Bulls made the plays in the 2nd OT and the Celtics did not.

Decimated by injuries, playing in a hostile environment against the Bulls and the refs, the Celtics showed us all why they are the defending champs. Just a gritty, gutsy, ballsy effort by the boys in green.

Up 3 with 4.5 seconds left in the first OT, the Celtics elected not to
foul and got burned when Ben Gordon drained a three with Paul Pierce in his
face. It was one of those hindsight is 20/20 moments.

Rondo was spectacular again: 55 mins, 25 pts, 11 reb, 11 assists and 1 TO. Although his offense disappeared in the overtimes.

I never got the press release from the league stating the refs would no longer give the benefit of the doubt to league stars. Paul Pierce was treated like a rookie in this game. He got zero calls. I can't wait to see LeBron and Kobe suffer the same treatment.

I loved Scal's effort in this one. The 3 to kick off the OT. Several hard, no-easy-buckets-on-my-watch fouls. He got screwed on the block call on Derrick Rose late in the 4th quarter, and the clear path call on Hinrich was questionable. Scal was the anti-Mikki Moore.

Credit to the refs for correctly calling the Big Baby/Brad Miller
skirmish. I initially thought Miller had punched and/or head-butted
Davis, but replays showed that not to be true. Calling a personal foul
on Davis and tech on Miller was the proper call.

another great game, the refs were terrible, how do you foul out perk on that play
and im with you chuck i cant wait to watch lebron get hacked on his way to the bucket and not get the benefit of the refs calling a foul if there is even a guy within ten feet of him

  • Double P Reppin the B

This one hurt, like I really, really wanted to win this game.

  • WestCoastCelt

Rondo’s offense didn’t disappear. Doc took it. He does this all the time. It’s the Rondo show for 3 quarters and then it’s the Pierce top-of-the-key isolation game.
Agree the refs got the BBD/Miller incident right. Got just about everything else wrong.
The foul-up-3 issue is not a hindsight call. It’s a hotly debated issue. Foul and even if he hits 2, you’re up one with excellent free throw shooters of your own.
This game should have been a W.

When you saw who was calling the game did you hold out much hope?
What is it about Sunday’s BTW? Boston just plays like shit every Sunday.
I love Paul Pierce and I may get called out for this but I thought he had a bad game. Much too selfish. There were times when he made up his mind he wasn’t going to give the ball up and he made bad plays.
And Big Baby. He did some nice things but 3 blown lay-ups.
Oh well Boston wins in 6.

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p0115705418b0970b droopy

im lost for words.. 8 on 5 all series. pathetic

  • Baron

Devastating loss, and I agree with WestCoastCelt, rondo gets his offense taken from him, what he hell was with giving the ball to paul pierce for isos over and over? 6 fucking turnovers, missed clutch free throws, missed shots over and over.
This team is decimated, and it got even more decimated with foul trouble. the bench is absolutely useless.UGHHHH.
Oh, and whats up with the bulls being allowed to kick the ball? i saw on 2 different occasions they kicked the damn ball causing a turnover and leading to points for them..wtf?
Our chance to win was in the first overtime, and I was almost positive it was about to happen, nope gordon hits an impossible shot and the celtics were out of gas, i knew the bulls had the game at that point.
I dont what to think about this series…its a whole new series now, and im not that confident

  • WestCoastCelt

BTW, Marbury -17 in 5 minutes, TA -12 in 3 minutes, Mikki -9 in 6 minutes. Wow.

  • Double P Reppin the B

My only real knock on the play calling was the blown execution with 4.5 seconds left in a tie game in OT.
Now was that play call really for rondo to take a contested 20ft jumper? I mean you couldn’t come up with anything better than that??? I thought with 4.5 seconds left we were going to win that game no doubt and I was expecting a nicely ran play but saw nothing and that is where the whole momentum changed in the game.

  • WestCoastCelt

In fairness, it looked like Doc was livid after that play. That wasn’t what he wanted at all.

  • DRJ

    Huh?

  • DRJ

I think Rondo was gassed by the end, so was Pierce, hell, so was everybody. When you have a 7 man rotation and it gets taken down to 5… well, you’re screwed. Bulls got very, very lucky with some miracle Gordon shots. This won’t happen again… PP playing like crap, refs screwing up this badly (well, not so sure about that one, but….
Not worried about this series. Not worried about 2nd round either. But we better play like we did in game 3 in every Cavs game.

  • WestCoastCelt

You don’t recognize those as plus-minus figures?

  • Baron

I dont know how you are confident I am not myself, I like that you are though.
This team is tired, yes and theyre only going to get more tired as the series goes on.
This was a gut punch game…i find paul pierces performance unnaccepptable, and for all the praise he got for game 3? he wasnt really all that good in that game either. running all the offense through him when he doesnt “have it going” is the most annoying thing to watch. rondo and ray have it going and youre running pierce isos, where hes either turning it over or missing a shot. annoying.
The bulls have proved they can win in boston by the way. they win tuesday and will have the chance to close out at home, after losing this game the way we did, that wouldnt suprise me. the pressure is back on boston, when they could be sittin , pretty at 3-1, they find themselves in a dog fight against a deeper, younger team

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p011570423591970b KobeWearsAPurpleThong

I just can’t blame the refs-I won’t do it. Instead, I’ll blame the following: (the names of said violators have been omitted)
    A)Missed layups
    B)Missed free-throws
C)Bad play-calling i.e. not fouling before Gordon had a chance to nail that 3.
Ok, my blaming is over. Can we please win the next 2? This Celtics team may just be too injured and too old to win a 7-game series. URGENCY…PLEASE!!

  • WestCoastCelt

What pisses me off most is the long-term. 2-2 is very different that 3-1 and we all know this team would benefit greatly from the extra rest. Now this one’s a battle instead of closing it out in the next game and getting rest, which means the next round is that much more likely to now take longer than possibly otherwise so by the time they get to the Cavs (who are better to begin with, especially without KG and will be rested), the Celts will have played 12-14 games instead of 9-11. The refs aren’t just screwing these individual games for the Celts, they’re screwing their long-term playoff chances. That’s what infuriated me.

  • NineSevenEight

In reality, the Celtics should be 4-0 and this thing should be over. Pierce’s missed freethrows, turnovers in key situations, and run-the-clock-down iso step-back, fade aways are killing the team. I can’t tell what’s going on. Is he’s getting worked by a guy with a strained groin? Or is he just missing? He should be running laps around Salmons. What disappoints me about Paul is him saying he’s going to treat Game 4 as if they lost Game 3 before the game. He was sleepwalking out there again. I don’t know what it takes for him to “get up” for games but his poor executions and “the man” mentality aren’t what got this team to where it is. He was walking up and down the court. Disappointing to see. He looks passionless out there. I’m also tired of watching the Pierce show while everyone stands around. Ray was hitting key shots and wasn’t utilized as well as he should have been.
To Paul’s credit, he was literally raped under the basket without a call for the entire game, but I don’t want to see him bitch to the refs about it every single play down. THEY AREN’T REVERSING THE CALLS! EVER! It’s Doc’s job to bitch. Paul’s job is to get back on D.
We know the refs were atrocious, like every game–home and away–but the Celtics need to get over it. One of the only calls they got right was the Miller/Baby scrap. After that everything was a touch foul to the no-names on the Bulls. The Celtics were in the penalty THREE minutes into the quarter. Ray had to get pile-driven to the floor by Thomas to get to the line while taking the three. But Kirk releases the ball and gets tapped on the fingertips (maybe his manicure got messed up?) when the ball is already in the air and goes to the line. If that’s a foul every game, Ray should be living at the line. If this is supposed to be the playoffs, that’s “not” a foul the same way it “wasn’t” a foul when Pierce was molested under the basket.
That 3 by Gordon to tie? Terrible coaching. The Bulls have been hitting circus shots all series, why should we expect anything but? Should have been fouled on the inbounds pass.
Baby played a terrible game. His shot wasn’t falling at all. Two or three more made shots and they leave with a W. He couldn’t even hit layups.
The Bench? MIA in the playoffs thus far. The most production they got from the bench was benefitted by being up by 30 in garbage minutes. Eddie House has been deadly all season. They need to create more for him and he needs to HIT shots. He’s missed way too many open shots.
Overall, I thought Ray played well when he was allowed to touch the ball. Rondo was Rondo. What can you say about him? I thought Scal used his fouls well, actually. Very un-Moore-like. BTW, How many times have we seen Rondo go on the break and get fouled ahead of his man and not be given the clear path foul. I feel like they call it on the C’s ALL the time. That was questionable, but what can we as fans expect? Perk put up some big minutes and points. Shame we missed Scal and him at the end there. That can’t happen again. Other than that. Nothing. Davis? Bad. House? Bad. Marbury? Bad. Moore?….WORST. Has he even scored in the playoffs? He definitely has more fouls than points.
So so far the Celtics have played one game of Celtics basketball and have two wins to show for it. This is the playoffs and it feels watching preseason games. Too lax and reliant on home court advantage again. Like last year. I hope the Celtics find themselves in the next two days and stick around because they can’t afford to play lax basketball when half of their guys are in street clothes.

  • Baron

Yup, I thought the celts were gonna take care of buisness and take care of the bulls in 5….shoulda realized that wasnt gonna happen…nothing comes easy for the cs

  • DRJ

gotcha. not surprised. only perk and rondo and sometimes ray played well. hell, only rondo played really well.
and we saw today the price we pay for having such a short bench. we lose 2 bigs and we have none left.

  • NineSevenEight

What ticks me off even more is that all of the Bulls’ wins have come down to one possession. That’s ONE possession that the Celtics missed opportunities on. That’s not the way you want to lose games. When the Celtics are playing Celtics basketball, they win by double digits. The Bulls have yet to prove that. They just hang around and hit circus shots like that Gordon bank shot. That can’t happen. They can’t let them linger around because the Bulls have proven twice that they can wrap up a tight game. Why even put yourself in that situation? Grrrrr.

  • DRJ

Bulls are not a good team, not yet anyway. They got lucky today, and it was tight even tho Cs played like crap. The Bulls are not capable of a convincing win… they can win with lucky hero shots, relatively bad play from the Cs, and lots of help from the refs. That’s about it.
But regarding the extra rest we might have gotten… don’t know about that. Last year, you remember, the same thing happened… Lakers got too much time off. Extra rest for the guys often turns out to be a bad thing… seems they get out of playing mode. We’re good.
But Paul does need to snap out it, stop going into “I’m the hero” mode at the end of games, and keep playing Celtics ball.

  • NineSevenEight

    BTW BigMck,
You and I and the rest of C’s fans know that it will be a cold day in hell before LeBron and Kobe suffer the same treatment Pierce (2008 Finals MVP) has gotten.

  • Bill

Sooo frustrating. Took Doc 47 minutes and 25 seconds to figure out that TA would shut down Rose.
Doc draws an excellent play for Ray to hit the 3 at the end of regulation. But why don’t you foul Salmons right off the inbound? That’s a high risk decision that doesn’t seem to have much upside.
And Truth is playing like a falsehood this series. Seriously Paul, make your fucking free throws and this series is over! Not playing like a champion whatsoever.

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p0115705369a0970b Aingelives

We hung around in this game because of poor foul shooting by the Bulls. Its a tough loss and I’m ticked!! Perk was great,Big Baby will hit those looks in Boston.

  • baron

Id prefer never to see tony allen on the basketball court in celtic green…ever again…I saw him start the double OT and knew it wasw over right then
Tony allen cant shut down derrick rose, or ben gordon. tony allen is an overrated defender and a dumb one

  • Baron

TA should be in the game?
no thanks. id prefer never to see him on the floor again in celtic green.
and, no he cant shut down derrick rose, hes an overrated defender and a dumb one

  • Kareem

Pierce just looks out of it and tired. It doesn’t make any sense–he’s not playing with much fire at all. Even after making that three.
Also, I believe we should stop saying, “Rose will never have a game like that again,” or, “Gordon will never make a shot like that again.” They have, and they will.

C’mon man, you can’t compare the Boston Celtics’ Paul Pierce to Kobe Bryant, KB>>>>>>>>>>PP in that regard.
