Tolerance Lives In Spain

"Our brains would normally go here"

This has to be one of the dumbest things I've seen.

That's the Spanish basketball team… pushing the sides of their eyes backwards… in the classic, racist, "hey… look at me…. I'm Chinese now" pose.  Yes, that's Pau Gasol in there too (#4, 3rd from the right).  And yes, there is a pretty good Asian population in LA.  So their reaction to this should be fun.

LA has a very big Asian population, but come on. It’s LA. Things that are commonly known as shitty are considered awesome (see Bynum, Andrew) and assholes are worshipped as heroes (see Bryant, Kobe) there. If anything, the mindless Laker fans will probably try to name the main street in Chinatown the Kung Pao Gasol Way. Nothing will surprise me about LA. Nothing.

  • Jonny Drama

Well, at least the Lakers aren’t about to get a new Chinese point guard that will be playing with Gasol.
    Oh, wait…

Spain isn’t just competing against the world in sports …They also have a competition with Alabama for most ignorant racial place on the planet … Since slavery and jim crow ended Alabama has been a bit weaker and Spain has looked to pounce at every turn
    * Did everyone forget during the world cup the Spain coach called Thierry Henry a Black s*** ?
Could we expect anymore from the country that brings us Sabado Gigante and Pau Gasol?? not really

Yeah this is a pretty stupid thing to do. This should generate an interesting response from teh Asian community.

RJ , have you ever lived in ALABAMA?? If not I suggest you speak on something you know about. Dont make comments about a area you dont know anything about. SWEET HOME ALABAMA!

  • G4L

Wow very classy spain… very classy!

  • TJ

In soccer matches in Spain they throw bananas on the field when African players are on the field. It is a very racist country. This does not surprise me.

  • DreinLA

I Love Red’s Army – maligning people in L.A. in the way you did, is no different than what the twits on the Spanish national team did. Why is it so hard for you to keep the Lakers vs. Celtics about the sports and not the people?
Rj, you clearly have no idea what you’re talking about either. Spain is a pretty diverse liberal nation. They have had diversity well before the United States was a twinkle in some Puritan’s eyes.
Racism is alive in every state of the Union. Any town, Alabama is no less racist than Boston, Mass.
And Sabado Gigante is from Chile, not Spain. Not all Spanish-speaking shows are from Spain or Mexico… in fact, Sabado Gigante broadcasts from the U.S. now.

  • Athanacropolis

Stupid, Spain, really stupid. Criticize China politically, not on how they look.
In response to some of the comments: Spain and Europe, are just as racist. Speaking from my experience in Europe and among them here, they are not big fans of blacks, Arabs, Asians, or anyone not like them. European society is pretty segregated in the sense that the white Europeans like having immigrants in their country just fine, as long as they don’t associate with the mainstream. And that’s NOT like the U.S.–the issue people have here is just regulating immigration.
And DreinLA, with all due respect, your statement “[Spain] have had diversity well before the United States was a twinkle in some Puritan’s eyes.” is flat-out incorrect. The Inquisition? Their treatment of Jews over the past few centuries? The treatment of the Basques? Come on.

  • Lakerhater

Um you might want to wait to condemn them….I think they are actually taunting Sasha V. with crybaby faces. Either way Gasol is still a douche.

  • Jp

    I like basketball.

Spain racist?. We didn´t seggregate blacks as the USA did in universities, army, etc, we haven´t had riots as the ones in L.A due to a blatantly racist Police (or in England against Asian People), we do not ask the people race for the Census…I think you Americans only see the straw in the other´s eye, don´t you?

Every nation has a history that is similar to this, including the United States. The genocide of the American Indian. Slavery. Denial of women suffrage. Internment camps of World War II. Racial segregation.
Spain is hardly what some here are trying to paint it as.

I wouldn’t throw all Americans into one basket, but I do agree with your sentiment here. As Americans, we tend to be pretty ignorant about our own history and about world politics. Nothing matters to us until it happens to us.

Believe me RJ, im not dismissing Alabama history or the souths for that matter with a song. But I do take offense when someone who doesn’t live in the south, gets some stats from a Google search or Wikipedia…and feels that they know about where ive lived for 30 years. Its people like you that keep racism alive…..Im not saying it doesn’t exist, far from it but ignorance breeds ignorance. And as far as hurting my proud southern feelings….it would take a lot more to do that then some ignorant comments. So maybe YOU should squeeze some real life experience inbetween your trips to redsarmy.com. So come on Down!! We would love to have you, they dont call it SOUTHERN hospitality for nothin!

  • Yari

Guess what? In Spain, that gesture is NOT considered offensive. Only in the USA that gesture is used to mock the asian people and, obviously, none of the spanish players knew it. They only tried to do a sympatethic and friendly gesture towards the chinese people. It’s a shame to see that good effort to be twisted because the f*cking oh-how-can-they-be-so-racist americans have been using that gesture to mock asians for generations.
