Fugly

First and foremost, let me state the Celtics won and in the playoffs that is all that matters. But this was the worst NBA game I've ever watched. Before I delve into the ugliness, props to KG for a monster game (28 pts, 8 reb) including a clutch shot that put the Celtics ahead for good 74-72 with 21 seconds left. Sam Cassell had 10 of his 13 points in the final quarter. Perk hauled down 12 big rebounds. And as a team, the Celtics contained the mighty LeBron James (2-18 FG, 10 TOs). Now for the nastiness:

-Ray Allen (0-4 FG) was held scoreless for the first time in 11 years. He was outplayed by Wally Szczerbiak.

-Paul Pierce had 4 pts on 2-14 shooting. (Although he gets credit for taking two charges and playing D on LeBron)

-The Celtics shot 40% and had 21 turnovers. They had scoreless stretches of 4-5 minutes in the first three quarters. They had 28 points combined in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

Let's just say this hideous performance will do nothing to shut up the likes of Dan Shaughnessy, Gerry Callahan and Rob Gill (3 Boston media legends) who have spent the past week blasting the Celtics while claiming they don't have what it takes to win a championship. In my book, all that matters is that the C's are up 1-0.

Box Score | Recap

Oh yeah, KG broke out the Cobra in the 4th quarter. Unfortunately TNT only caught him on camera for about two seconds.

Hey SacKing, how’s that loss feeling?
What do you think is going to happen when Ray Allen and Paul Pierce DON’T have terrible Shooting nights?
    King James. meh.

  • I bleed green in L.A.

I guess I have to be happy about this? I expect game 2 to be very different, and I’m not worried about Paul, but Ray is killing us. When was the last time he shot a free throw? Draw the foul, get some easy points and that might help his jumper?

Ya you said it, FUGLY!! I think game two is going to be much different. Why was Pierce and Allen so off I don’t get it. The good thing is that two of our stars were off and one of theirs were off but we still won. So if even one has a better game for us it should be easier for us in game two. I have to mention how good Perk played as well, if it wern’t for Perk and Rondo we don’t win this game.

Paul also forced Lebron into that travel near the sideline by the Cs bench. Great play anticipating the move. KG also had that jumper to tie the score at 70 under two minutes.
Speaking of fugly, how does Ilgauskus get lauded for being possibly the best offensive rebounder in the history of the game to paraphrase Dick Stockton when in front of our very eyes he’s holding the guy down with one hand and reaching over with the other? Z is sneaky, you can see him on picks tugging with that offhand too. My real question is how can a giant ogre be “sneaky”? Is Perk too athletic and/or ripped to get his sneaky ogre card?
On a final note I have to contradict you, Chuck. The ugliest NBA game ever was in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, but it was in 2002, I believe game 4 versus the Pistons. 66-64, something like that? There was one actual play that resembled the game of “basketball”, that give and go between Toine and Paul toward the end of the game.

Paul gets a LOT of credit for his D. The Pierce/Posey tandem forced LeBron into a bad night. He didn’t just suck on his own… the Celtics made him suck.

I have heard of the legendary cobra, but today I finally got to see it for a split second. The NBA, Where KG’s cobra happens!

  • LeviStanford

That is twice in the postseason that Lebron has had a chance to make a big play at the end of the fourth quarter, drives in, and misses a chip shot basket.

  • SacKing

the loss is feeling quite good actually. because that is the last one i will experience. 4 game win streak, courtesy of king james. Lebron scores 12 points and you still only win by 4? you should have wiped us out by 30 or 35 points with him only scoring 12. The celtics are in deep trobuble. Lebron will NOT struggle this badly ever again in this series. he will come out with a vengeance, he will go for 55 points game 2, then will average about 45 points the rest of the way.
by the way, the cobra doesn’t look as intimidating as the king.
    Cavs in 5

Paul Pierce had 4 points tonight. Ray Allen was held scoreless for the first time in 11 years. Celtics still won.
Think that is gonna hold? Cleveland has no chance in this series.

    ssshady right
The C’s have 3 all-stars, so if one or even two have a bad night, they still have backup
But the Cavs only have one, and no matter how good he is, every player has an off night sometime, and the Cavs can’t compete without him
